Modern Warfare 2 spends sixth week atop UK sales chart
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been entrenched at the top spot of the UK sales chart for six weeks now. FIFA 10's expected pre-holiday sales surge happened and the game rebounded from fifth to second place, but it still wasn't enough to suppress the firepower of Activision's FPS (it seems the only thing more powerful than Call of Duty is Waldo). While stuffing themselves with Turkish delight, Chart-Track has declared this the "Official Christmas Chart" of 2009. Nintendo has Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus at the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Despite serious competition during the holiday week from more family-friendly fare, Assassin's Creed 2 maintains a respectable foothold, slipping only two spots down to fifth place. Thanks to the movie release, James Cameron's Avatar got its blue butt on some big bird-lizard things and flew up 17 spots (129%) to reach 12th place.

They made a mistake, for spot 23 it's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and it says the developer is Treyarch when everybody knows it's by Infinity Ward.
Charliekrad @ Dec 21st 2009 9:19AM
It's the wii edition or reflex
That_Guy436 @ Dec 21st 2009 10:10AM
@Charliekrad Ah that makes sense. Thank you for the correction my good sir.
Brodo @ Dec 21st 2009 12:46PM

Liquid man @ Dec 21st 2009 7:47PM
@Brodo

Teh Tr0LL @ Dec 21st 2009 9:16AM

Then a White Kid Said @ Dec 21st 2009 10:05AM

Katana Master @ Dec 21st 2009 3:10PM
I do but I don't get it till xmas =P
iamnotafish @ Dec 21st 2009 9:27AM
I can imagine this game also being one of the most traded in titles of the year. It's worth a pretty penny as a trade in and the game gets old relatively quickly.
Alex @ Dec 21st 2009 3:27PM
I was surprised when I got £26 for CoD4 about 5 months after it came out.
The Pirate @ Dec 21st 2009 9:29AM
Kinda wish Avatar was a bit higher. Im really enjoying it. Yeah its not a triple A title but it is damn fun. Its basically 2 different games in one as well (The Avatars and the Humans).
Brian (PC gamer extraordinaire) @ Dec 21st 2009 9:46AM
go kill yourself
ZayCube (Steam ID: ZayCube) @ Dec 21st 2009 9:51AM
That comment coming from that Avatar is a bit funny :P
Teh Tr0LL @ Dec 21st 2009 10:01AM
Avatar... a good game....? the movie is good the game is not
The Pirate @ Dec 21st 2009 10:06AM
Meh. Different strokes for different Folks. I dont let reviews tell me what i'll like. I rented Avatar and i ended up really enjoying it. Dont just go with the Sheep and say a game sucks. If youve tried Avatar and didnt like it then thats fine, but dont just say things like "go kill yourself" or "the movie is good the game is not" without actually playing the game. Im sure ill get a hail of "I have played it" comments, but thats probably bullshit. If reviews say a game is bad no one buys it. I rented it on a whim and ended up liking it.
Then a White Kid Said @ Dec 21st 2009 10:06AM
everyone's acting like Avatar came from god's vagina, no movie can be this good!
The Pirate @ Dec 21st 2009 10:09AM
The movie isnt THAT good. I mean, it is great. Id probably give it 9/10 but its not as downright jizztastic as everyone says.
den-69 @ Dec 21st 2009 10:22AM
Same with the Saw game, bad reviews but I played it and enjoyed it.
Sure I would probably give it a 7 out of 10 but it was fun.
Granger @ Dec 21st 2009 10:27AM
Exactly, it's all highly derivative, with some very fancy-pants tech and technique behind it all. But it's also a really good film, and well worth watching and sharing and definitely deserving of all its praise. Kind of like Uncharted 2.
Haven't tried the game though, may give it a go when it hits the bargain bin. Don't know how they failed to pull a King Kong on their second go around though, had the formula down pat to be a great licensed game. I'll take your word for it that it's enjoyable though, and I'll try and play it sooner if I get the chance.
Granger @ Dec 21st 2009 10:29AM
My first paragraph/three sentences is about Avatar the film not the game, in case it wasn't clear.
The Pirate @ Dec 21st 2009 10:30AM
the gameplay is kinda weird. Its semi-free roam. The graphics are freakily good for a movie game. I can honestly say i havnt enjoyed a movie game this well since King Kong
johnnynumber5 is powered by the cell @ Dec 21st 2009 11:51AM
I don't care what anyone says but Avatar the movie is one of the best movies I've ever seen hands down. I'm a huge star wars fanboy and this one avatar movie is better than all 6 star wars movies combined. It's not just a good visual effects movie but it also had an epic story, well defined mythology and amazing characters. I didn't know what to expect coming into the film but I left in awe and amazement. Best movie of the year without a doubt and maybe my favorite movie of all time.
As far as the game goes I'd love to play it but I don't rent games and I didn't think it would be worth a buy at full price. I'll get it when it drops down to bargain bin. It's crazy that I know it's a movie game that may not be good but the movie was so compelling that I will eventually play the game.
Dr. Orpheus @ Dec 21st 2009 12:49PM
Avatar the movie was awful. I didn't think Cameron could let me down but he did. He just shoved star wars, the matrix, lord of the rings, dances with wolves, and fern gully together. It's a predictable story with fantastic visuals. And only one good performance and that comes from Stephen Lang.
DJ Nicky Testiomontinello @ Dec 21st 2009 1:29PM
My favorite part of the Avatar game was shutting the system off and taking it back.
(haha no thats a joke i'm not dumb enough to spend money on that game, sorry)
Jorge @ Dec 21st 2009 10:33AM
why should we care about another country's sales? where the us chart?
The Pirate @ Dec 21st 2009 10:39AM
Because believe it or not, the US is FAR from the most important country. Technically the UK was the most important country since we owned the entire world at one point.
John @ Dec 21st 2009 10:45AM
Except that the US is the biggest market for just about anything. And "owning" the entire world and holding on to it are 2 different things. Hell it took like 50 years to quell rebellion on your own little island.
Mr Mobius - the wandering artist @ Dec 21st 2009 10:46AM
Because the internet is international. There are people here from the UK (inc me) who like some more local news. You do realise not all Stiq staff are American as well. You don't bitch like this at every Japanese Sales Charts so don't here.
Granger @ Dec 21st 2009 10:47AM
Why do you use "we" like everyone is supposed to agree with you?
MrAlex @ Dec 21st 2009 10:47AM
We didn't own the entire world, just like half of it. The US is not FAR from the being the most important country either.
And although Jorge posted in the stupidest way ever, I would like to see a US chart too, but it might be because they don't compile sales data in the US for all VG retailers.
Also the UK is not 'another country' the internet is global, deal with it.
Brazell @ Dec 21st 2009 10:49AM
@ The Pirate
He's just asking for US sales, which -- yes, believably -- are more telling than British sales.
As for your owning the entire world... It would be far more impressive if, during that time, the British empire didn't enslave and starve it's own subjects.
Taijo @ Dec 21st 2009 11:26AM
Believe it or not, Joystiq is visited by people who live outside the USA.
By saying "we" like you did, you make it sound like you think everyone who reads joystiq is american and that joystiq writes only for americans. You open the door to a lot of "foreign" flaming and hating.
Rich @ Dec 21st 2009 11:38AM
These are murky waters that are best avoided. There are very few countries with an unblemished history and neither the UK or the US fall into that category, not even recently.
It would be best to get back to good old fashioned console fanboy baiting unless anyone wants to have a good discussion on creationism? (Joke - definitely rhetorical....)
den-69 @ Dec 21st 2009 8:41PM
British empire was the biggest in the world I'll have you know!
Built on slaves and tea but it was still the biggest!
Brazell @ Dec 21st 2009 10:47AM
Well let's just get those patches out before Christmas.
Brazell @ Dec 21st 2009 10:50AM
Sounds great IW... now let's get that 360 patch out to fix some of these glitches and bugs eh?

erivera3 @ Dec 21st 2009 2:13PM
I just wish I could play the broken game without being thrown into another private match.
Man this game has some issues.
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Dec 21st 2009 3:46PM
Mainly the fact that it was extremely mediocre.
