Last week's digital issue of MCV featured an advertisement for an accessory bundle mentioning the "PSP-4000." The listing has since been described as being nothing more than a mistake. Negative Gamer contacted A4G, which placed the ad, and the company's license manager said the mention of a new iteration for Sony's handheld was a "mistake on [their] part." The spokesperson was unaware of a new model.
Rumors of the UMD-enabled PSP-4000's existence have been floating around for a few months. These are not be confused with the longer-standing PSP-4000 rumors, which ended up heralding the PSP Go. Would a real PSP-4000 be considered a mistake?

They better not release this shit. It's been 6 years, we need a NEW next-gen handheld.

I agree but on the other hand still find it funny how Nintendo just released a handheld which still feels like a pimped out GBA and in comparison the PSP looks like alien technology hardware...
And yet, we still want a new, better PSP.
I hope they make one. And knowing Sony, it will probably be expensive but full of tech craziness. The geek in me says "yesssss!" but my wallet gently weeps.

just 6? uhh you DO realize that Sony is STUCK on that "10 year lifespan" shit right?
I wouldn't expect a PSP2 until 2011 at the earliest....and thats with it being announced at E3 next year....
I mean both Sony & Nintendo have pretty much been running the same handhelds with a few improvements for the past 6 years.....if anything Nintendo would jump to the DS2 before Sony does the PSP2....

The 10-year life-span bullshit shouldn't be associated with handhelds. I'm sure that Sony will release a new handheld before Nintendo, considering how well the DS is selling.

yea I agree that 10 years on a single handheld format this day and age is dumb, but I don't think Sony is EVER anticipating outselling Nintendo in the handheld arena. I mean by all accounts the PSP IS better than the DS as far as functionality. Its just the fact that Nintendo went HARD after that casual market with their games while Sony was too busy trying to display the PSPs multiple uses instead of hitting us with game after game(which is what they are doing now). If Sony actually PLANS to outsell Nintendo with the PSP2 they are REALLY going to have to go after the Soccer moms, and old people with the puzzle games, babysitting games, etc.

The "ten year lifecycle" quote has to be the most misunderstood quote of all time. Sony never meant that they wouldn't release new hardware for ten years. All they meant is that the console would be viable, supported and profitable for ten years. They will release new hardware before the ten year anniversery of the PS3 or PSP. Although with the PSP it does seem like they've been "tweaking" it for a while, it's been released for a little over 4 1/2 years. Sony made a similar quote about the ps2, but I think they said 7 years for the ps2, not exactly sure about that one.

I don't agree with this. I think the DS' touch screen gives it the upper hand in portable gaming, especially with a lot of casual games. Sony has a machine that is far more capable in terms of 3D, but they cut the legs out from under the hardware when they didn't include dual analog sticks, which many 3D games need to play properly.
IMO, if the PSP had dual analog I think it would be equally functional, but in a different way than the DS. Without the second stick it's simply gimped.

This second analog stick talk is bullshit too. Who can even stand the original one? It's crappy in every damn way so why would I want to mess with two of them? While I understand why it is the way it is and admire the ingenuity; it doesn't make it perform any better.
Improve the nub first, then add a second one.

1. Sony are only stuck on the 10 year bullshit because that's how long the PS2 has been going. The PSone didn't last that long, and the PS3 probably won't either.
2. The 10 year bullshit does apply to handhelds - the original Game Boy line (I count Color, not Advance), lasted that long. Actually, longer: it was released in 1989, and the Game Boy Advance came out in 2001... with the Color continuing to sell after that.
But yes, it would be nice for Nintendo and Sony to create devices that respond to the huge leaps in portable technology. If either of them managed to rejig the ION platform into a portable system with decent battery life, I'd be all over it.

Umm.. no it's not. Sure, maybe they need to improve the stick too, but even the best analog stick on the world doesn't solve the issues caused by there only being one of them. Even a crappy second stick would be better than what they have now.

Yes it did. It was in production for roughly 11 years.

I'm still stuck on the fact that the R&D for this was low costing as all they did was add a few things, remove others, and use the same design as the Mylo2. Not to mention I wouldn't be surprised if they were using the Go as R&D for the PSP2 as far as going digitally downloaded media only

I'm with you there. Sony has had a history of having their stories leak early, then saying the usual line about not commenting on rumors and speculation. This just seems like more of the same.
Also, the PSP2 may come out in 2011, but I doubt we're going to see it announced at E3 2010. As I said, once we start seeing leaked Qore footage and seeing developers forum posts about it, that's when I'll start expecting the announcement.

That's a shame. If a PSP-4000 came out that was UMD-enabled, I would probably finally buy one. I refuse to buy a PSP-Go, and I'm too lazy to track down a PSP-3000 (not that I've looked; I imagine stores are still selling old stock of them but I don't know). A PSP-4000 would be the impetus I need to finally get one.

Like I said, I haven't looked. I was under the impression that the PSP-Go was meant to succeed the PSP-3000 and so they would stop making the latter.
Still, my main point is, the release of a new (decent) system would be the final push to make me buy a PSP.

how long have you been around here? damn near EVERY article ABOUT the PSP Go said it was NOT replacing the original PSP. Why in the hell would they do that KNOWING millions of people are still uncomfortable with not having a PHYSICAL copy of their games. As for waiting for a "decent" system uhh the 2000 is decent, the 3000 is decent. Whats there to wait for? I mean there are a SHITTON of great games for the PSP as is and more and more are still coming out.

Calm down bro. He obviously had a misunderstanding. No need to go off on him because of that.
Now in response to the article at hand. I have a hard time believing it was a "mistake" but rather they leaked out plans of the future. But I can see where it could be a mistake because of all the editions of the PSP that has been released. Now I am in favor of a PSP2 and I pray for an E3 announcement next year.

...I've been here about three years longer than you, jackass.
By "decent" system, I meant "not the PSP-Go". As in, the reason I didn't buy a PSP when the last new system came out was because it was the PSP-Go, and the PSP-Go will go down as a laughable failure.
And yes, I'm quite aware of the quantity of good games in the PSP's library. What, did you think I wanted to buy one because they look pretty? Or did you think I needed a really fancy, nubby paperweight?

and the Go IS decent, just not for gamers on a budget or that like to hold their games in their hands. I would jump on a Go if it were $50 cheaper and was at LEAST 32Gbs

Give me a freaking break Aggie. It's the latest revision of the PSP line, of course Sony wants it to phase out the other units. Why would they release a product that they've already invested in and not hope for it to succeed?
Just think: Sony claims that the Go won't replace the UMD variants because there are just too many people that won't move up to it. They're trying to play nice with their fanbase. And why ditch the discs when you can't transfer them over? Sony wanted the Go to phase out the regular PSPs, but clearly, the general public response has been lukewarm at best, and they know that now. Sure, it has decent specs and is quite capable as a device, but when the price is so high in relation to the other PSPs and the competition from the big N, there will be problems. Add the fact that their game environment has been cut in half between physical and digital media and you see that Sony has quite an interesting ecosystem to manage. Had everyone upgraded to the Go, this wouldn't be a problem at all, but alas, the Go has yet to make the big bucks, and thus, a possibility of a PSP-4000 is being mulled on. What can't you see here?

I want a PSP-2 already, with a second analog stick, and I'll most likely buy it. The Go is just a disaster. Just get a regular PSP, put custom firmware on it, and rip all the UMD games to it. Not only is it cheaper, but you have more features as well.
