Pretty much new playable character, but I'm not sure of anything else.

That was my thought when I saw the first trailer and that music kicked in halfway through. I was surprised nobody else commented on it.

I too liked star ocean 2....when it came out 11 years ago. A lot has changed since then though, and a horrible game like this happens when you don't adapt to change.

I think it's the horrendously clunky dodge system that's supposed to be the conerstone of combat or the fact that the "limit break" equivalents are only two button presses and still almost impossible to pull off.
Also the voice acting is pretty universally horrible, and the story has stupid plot detours in the middle of its stupid plot detours.
And oh yeah, anyone cool enough to want as a pc either gets killed or turned into a villain or never shows up agian.

i pushed myself through the entire game, died at the final boss, and never picked it back up. i might spoil a little about the game, so if you havent played it, you should probably stop reading.
the story was almost good, but half of the game, right in the middle, you have the protagonist acting like a whiny douche. its unreal, and totally killed the game for me. i think what it sums up to is i can tell what they were trying to do (i understand WHY they made him a whiny douche, thematically), because everything is there. its just done terribly wrong.

I liked it for the first couple of hours -- despite the cheese-ariffic voice acting -- and then I realized: Oh man, this is as interesting as it's going to get!
A lot of repetitive, nearly mindless, combat and not much story stringing it together. The trailer above takes all the story bits and crams them together so it looks kinda like a Japanese version of "Star Trek-Meets-Mass Effect", but it's just a standard-quality JRPG wandering monster smasher in an SF skin.
Oh, and possibly the most annoying thing? The characters have one or two slogans that they announce loudly after Every Frickin' Battle. And you can't turn it off.
Considering how much random monster-fighting there is in this game, after you've heard these phrases repeated for the thousandth time in two hours, you start to lose your mind.
So, I liked this one at first, but sold it used to the store after it became obvious that it was just a truly repetitive time sink.
My opinions, anyway ...

Yeah I'm avoiding this like the plague.
I'm not a fan of button mashing RPGs, annoying kids, or bad dialog.

Thats some pretty big balls on square enixs part stating "Star Ocean returns to the Playstation" considering it should have been on PS3 first and only for PS3 to make use of the blu ray disc. Star Ocean this generation on blu ray could have been made way more grand. That title should have read "Star Ocean returns to the Playstation family after fucking every fan in the ass again, and again, and again"

What's it matter, the game blows anyway. And it has nothing to do with lack of blu ray, it's just a shitty game.

Thats kind of his point. If the game was made with the PS3 in mind instead of the 360 it could have been so much more. Whether he is right or wrong is another issue but he's saying releasing and making this as a 360 exclusive was the dumbest shit SE could've done ... and I agree whole heartedly. They have been dicking PS3 owners over all generation without as much as a release.

Gotta agree with you guys. SE has pissed off PS3 users so much that I personally wouldn't be surprised if they announce FFversus13 as a multiplatform game.. I mean come on, what's left for them to lose? Respect from ps3 owners? They lost that a long time ago.
Here's hoping that WKC is gonna kick ass.

Having extra disc space isn't going to fix shitty combat, shitty story, shitty dialogue, shitty characters etc etc

Right, because a game that's basically a clunky mess would have been less clunky if it was made on the system that's much more difficult to program for, right?
Seriously, if these guys couldn't even get shit to work on the 360 what makes you think they'd be able to get it working on the more difficult PS3? The shittiness of this game had nothing to do with disc space.
Seriously though, Superman 64 would have totally rawked if only they'd had more storage space.

Ok...wasn't there a posting of why certain JRPG titles saw light of day on the x360 first, and then later on the PS3? I feel say their cause is valid no matter how much my fanboy pride was tarnished. Who knows how the PS3 version will playout? I for one will be trying it out myself and after beating the game I will cast judgement if its shitty or not.

Look forward to picking this up. I liked Star Ocean 3 and people said it was bad, so I won't let the universal panning get to me.

Star Ocean has been heavily, heavily influenced by Star Trek ever since the original game started out its story with an almost shot-for-shot recreation of the beginning of Star Trek Vi (not in the PSP remake, though). Even with all the obvious homages, however, I was still stunned to hear this trailer use music that's just a hair's width away from copyright violation of Andrew Courage's unmistakable main theme from The Original Series. Wow.
That aside, who put B-movie actors in your Star Trek, JC? They're not in mine! You sure you don't have some made-in-China bootleg?

I hope the fixed the glitches in the original version. You know, the ones that made the game suck ass.
Oh, wait, that was all features? I thought the terrible voice acting, horrible story, and uber-boring gameplay were could all be fixed by a patch.....

Thank Fod for voice options. The English voice acting seems terrible.

If you've ever played the original Star Ocean for the Super Famicom, you would know that they've always had a bit of Star Trek to them. The entire opening is in English, starting off with: "Star date: xxxx, Captain's Log...."
For the people who think that this game could have been better if it was designed with the PS3 in mind, I have to respectfully disagree. The 360 has shown it is quite capable of doing top-notch graphics right up there with the PS3.
On the other hand, Tri-Ace tends to muck around the uncanny valley. Look at Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, or Valkyrie Profile. It's probably an issue of budget and staff, but FFXII had better faces than Infinite Undiscovery.

I thought this game was fantastic, and i'm still waiting to purchase it, cheaply, thanks to people like you all. Yes, the middle part with the depressed main character could have been done slightly better, but considering the gravity of the situation, i thought it was acceptable. I was actually angrier at his inconsiderate friends more than anything. The only thing that made me truly angry was the OP final boss. When you're character is demolishing everything between you and that boss, so much so that you think you must have overleveled, the final boss should not be that hopelessly difficult. Meh.
