Legend of Zelda series director Eiji Aonuma says in the latest Edge magazine that the scale of the upcoming Wii release is what's foremost in his team's mind during development. Twilight Princess, he says, was the first Zelda game where they went for a more realistic feel in terms of size and scope of the world, and yet he feels that they weren't quite able to adapt all of their gameplay ideas to that larger space. As opposed to the DS-based Spirit Tracks, which Aonuma says started out in a much more traditional place, and thus was a little easier to "realize."
Aonuma says his team is starting out with a larger, grander world in the new Wii Zelda, and from there hopes to fill it up with all sorts of Zelda-esque game ideas. He and the team may not have been able to do everything they wanted with the adult Link-sized Hyrule the first time around (not that it wasn't well-received anyway), but they're planning to give it another hookshot in the next game.

I loved TP, but it really did feel like the huge outer world just slowed you down getting from dungeon to dungeon. The thing of it was, the few action sequences that happened above ground, like arrow-sniping Orcs to get into a dungeon, were usually more fun than the dungeons. I'd love to see more of a focus on the outer world and fewer dungeon crawls.

Fewer dungeon crawls in a Zelda game? BLASPHEMY.

I'm fine with keeping the same number of dungeon crawls, but I do think the ratio of dungeon to not-dungeon should be better.
There's so much cool stuff they could do to actually fill a life-sized overworld and give it soul. And it's a Zelda game so you know they don't have to sacrifice anything to add more awesome. I would not object to more awesome.

The outer world was really nice. Riding Epona from one side to the other was nice. More happening within Hyrule would be nice and more grand landscapes make it nice.

Starting with a huge game world, and building the rest of the game around that...
...it reminds me of what Rare said about Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, and that's not filling me with hope.

The difference is it'll be Nintendo filling that huge game world with Zelda stuff and not the husk of a once great game developer exploiting a popular franchise for sales.
I think it sounds like they're just putting more of an emphasis on the overworld action stuff that 'pratfall' was talking about which makes me even more excited for this game.

Yeah, but, well they are Rare and this is Nintendo. Rare is a shadow of what it once was. Nintendo is still making phenomenal games.

I would like to see the OoT mixed in with the TP, keeping all the mini aspects all through the world. Then seeing all those elements adding into the main story that you get a bit of as you go through.
They have the perfect setting to pull off an amazing game aside the developers being Nintendo, but it just always feels epic when you play it on any system.

I kind of really like Twilight Princess...and the overworld was not as fleshed out as it could have been, but was RIPE with potential. Still, it was hugely awesome, especially with the lack of epic Wii games since.

I'm up for a much grander scale. As long as Aonuma-san's team knows what they are upto, I'm sure it could provide a more lengthier Zelda experience

I see no point in making larger landscapes if there is no content within that space. I think the focus should be how we can put more action into this once great action-RPG and less emphasis on puzzle elements in dungeons.

Until Miyamoto is on board I am standing by my statement. Zelda Wii is as good as doomed in the hands of Aonuma.

I would love to see islands the size of Twilight Princes in a great ocean(like Wind Waker).

What idiot just dissed the Zelda franchise? What do you mean once great? Even the "bad" Zeldas beats a lot of games.

If your referring to me then yeah this "idiot" sees the once great franchise in dire need of reinvention and Aonuma is not up to the task. He is so caught up in his 'genuis' that he squandered numerous chances at a true successor to OoT. Zelda in his hands is a dying franchise.

I'm really looking forward to this! A huge Zelda filled with dungeons and a massive overworld to really engross you in the game - count me in!
I'm pre-ordering this pretty much as soon as I hear the NAME =P

Oh YES. This is really great news, I was afraid as hell they were going to "evolve" Zelda into some narrow, claustrophobic one-path-from-start-to-end piece of shit like what they did to Final Fantasy X (and way too many other games, btw). If they're actually taking TP's more open world and expanding from there, that's very promising.

With 7GB more disk space than on the Gamecube, I'm hoping it'll be a lot bigger!

The only thing I missed in Twilight princess were the side quests, there were too little. I would like to see some majora's mask sidequests again!
