It's sad they haven't done it. I would upgrade my DS Lite just for that.

NES games? Buy a flashcart already.

SNES games? Don't count on them being emulated any time soon.

If they had left the GBA hardware in, SNES emulation would be a snap.

@RupeeClock: ...SNES games not being emulated? They've done it on the Wii, I don't see how hard it would be to make a program to download that would let you play SNES games.

I too would like a GBA and GB/GBC digital download catalog... I miss games like the Link's Awakening and the Oracle series, Wario Land, the two super mario games, Kirby's Dream Land, the list goes 'on'.

There is homebrew that can emulate GBC games on the DS, i honestly don“t understand what the heck is Nintendo waiting.

@Phil
The wii can emulate SNES because it's powerful enough
The DSi is another matter, it's nowhere near as powerful, weaker than a PSP or an iPhone.
We already have homebrew emulators which show it's not that great on DS.

@ Darth:
Uh, the "GBA hardware" IS in the DSi. It still has both the same ARM7 and ARM9 processors that DS/DS Lite had (but at higher clock speeds), and the ARM7 was what GBA ran off of (thus, GBA compatibility with DS/DS Lite). The only thing DSi lacks is Slot-2.

And there's already a homebrew SNES emulator for DS called SNEmulDS. It works quite well, but isn't perfect. And hasn't been updated in over a year. Given than the DSi is a stronger system, once "DSi mode" has been cracked, I wouldn't be surprised to see a better, DSi-only emulator.

Of course, an official emulation solution (DSi VC) would be nearly flawless...

But, a handheld VC would be ideal, as it would bring back some older handheld games. And not just Game Boy, either. Game Gear, NeoGeo Pocket Color, Lynx (anything worthwhile on it?), WonderSwan (Japan only, though... heh), etc...

Eh, SNES emulation works pretty well on the DS Lite, and the DSi has a faster CPU and more RAM so theoretically once we get DSi mode homebrew it should be even better. I played through Earthbound on SnemulDS, it was perfect as far as I could tell.

"...SNES games not being emulated? They've done it on the Wii, I don't see how hard it would be to make a program to download that would let you play SNES games." It's not about the program, THE DS SCREEN HAS LOWER REsOLUTION. That's it.

@Meh: Ah, my mistake then, never crossed my mind that it was related to the screen...

So, then how come the DS is capable of rendering the 3D games it does? Is it because of that lower resolution and therefore lower demand on graphic output or something?

Still, if there's hardware for the GBA in there, doesn't that mean Gameboy and Gameboy Color titles should also be capable of being sold and played on it?

And I don't hate people who use flashcarts to say play older games, I have a moderate bit less disliking towards that (I mean hell, I've played a few N64 roms on my comp every now and then) but I hate it when I'm browsing others places and hearing people mention, 'yeah, I downloaded this game, it sucks, but I'll keep playing it anyways...'.

Sorry, just needed to toss in my two cents. It's the pirates of modern day games I dislike, not the homebrewers and classic console emulation builders.

Uh, wtf.

DS resolution: 256x192
GBA resolution: 240x160
SNES resolution: 256x224

See? Emulation is possible, but it simply won't fit!

You know, I thought the same thing for a while and then I finally bought a DSi last week...

If you like having the multi-functionality type devices, a DSi is a good call. But if you're fine with just playing the games, then by all means stick with the DS.

You are, on the contrary, missing out on some good stuff. But give it time and your battery will stop recharging, dust and dirt will continue to get behind the screen 'and' the speakers will begin distorting the image and you'll switch too. The tank models, especially the first manufactured ones, do not have the lifespan they ought to.

Really, you should never buy the first revision of a Nintendo handheld. You always get a raw deal in the end.

I definitely plan to be hesitant with the next 'major' revision, whatever it may be. But my DSi is small, thin, lightweight and a pleasant blue color...

It's perfect.

Let me correct myself. My DS Lite. If I had the first gen DS then I'd definitely take the plunge. But as it stands I have other devices for the functionality and my DS is only for games, so with that it isn't worth it to me, yet. I also suspect it won't ever since Nintendo is more than likely to move on the their next gen handheld within a year. To help compete against the iPod and the like. They're two different beasts but since the markets are converging Nintendo would be smart to give people less reasons to claim the iPod touch as a gaming platform.

Of course, people were saying the GBA was supposed to come out in 96/97 and obviously that was off by a bit. Really depends on what Sony does, I suppose.

So right. The DSi is completely pointless at the moment. So many people say "Well, I thought it sucked until I bought one, now I love it", but there's still not much that's great about it. Only a few extras that I actually like, but most of the additions are nothing I care about. I've already got a superior digital camera, so I don't need two inferior, 0.3 megapixel ones. I've got my PC and my Xbox 360 for all my media, and if I want a portal media player, I'll buy an iPhone. Obviously I don't have the money to at the moment, but in the mean time, I could buy an iPod Touch for the price of the DSi.

....oh noooooo, the same argument people have used since the creation of the DSi, what ever shall we do?

*buys one*

I could make several arguments about the iPhone and their new versions that came out, but people bought them regardless. :O

I love my DSI but with the exception of a handful of items DSiware has been a complete bust. A total bust. Rayman came out a week or 2 ago and there are maybe 5 other real games on there but thats about it. Oh and Dragons Lair too.

Pop Island is great too, fun CTF game that doesn't take itself very seriously. Thorium Wars is a decent "gamer's" game I guess, although not that good overall in my opinion. The controls are kind of wonky and the enemies are rather annoying, but if you just want to blow things up for half an hour it'll do in a pinch.
