Mobile emulation expert ZodTTD's newest project, a Nintendo 64 emulator for jailbroken iPhones, has been released -- and just in time for the holidays, too, allowing you to recreate that one video with those screaming, flailing children. With a miniscule $2.50 price tag and bluetooth support, which allows you to control the emulator with a Wii remote, it would be a pretty great deal. If, you know, it didn't run at a handful of frames per second.
Check out the video after the jump to see the emulator in action, and to decide whether the double-thick molasses-slow gameplay is still worth the price of admission.

He should keep it free... and charge when it's actually playable.

Or you can head to the nearest thrift store and pick up an N64 console and a couple controllers for $10 ;)

Super Mario 64 on the PSP one is a blast. It's actually about the most fun I've had on my PSP, along with Rock Band: Unplugged, LBP, Donkey Kong Country, and Warioland II (seriously, the game still holds up perfectly).
And yes, piracy freaks, I still own every one of those cartridges. And consoles, for that matter. But being portable just adds a whole new dimension. This is seriously the fourth time I've played Super Mario 64. Well, played through the last boss - still haven't gotten all stars, maybe I'll manage it this time. My old cartridge has 120, but only because my brother got the last two so I can't claim credit.
But anyways, I've yet to find anything else - other than Rampage World Tour - that works really playable on the PSP emulator either. Smash Bros. is just too slow to really capture the feel of the game, as is Star Fox...and the controls are kind of borked.

Good idea, charge for something that isn't useful. Maybe when you get it running at a smooth 30fps and have figured out a better control method. Hell, I'd pay $10 for it. But why would anyone pay for something that isn't playable?

Or if you have a N64, dust it off and play it.

Portable N64 = pure awesomeness, but this falls way short of awesomeness.
You cannot possibly expect anyone to enjoy playing N64 without the original controller or a reasonable substitute.

PS3 controller would have been better. More buttons, and an actual analog stick!

I disagree. I think they should be able to charge for things they've made.
However, charging for an emulator? That's shady territory.

See, this is why I like emulators for PC better. Emulators are perfectly legal, such as Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, Genesis, etc, since hardware can't be copyrighted. PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast are different since they require a BIOS file, which is copyrighted software embedded in a microprocessor. The BIOS must be dumped from the rightfully owned console. and not from the internet. What my point is, Project 64 and Zsnes are legally downloaded partly because the programmers don't charge money, but here we have this iPhone programmer charging $2.50 for something I could get for free and legally. Charging money for emulators is downright illegal. Look at no$gba and Martin...that project hasn't had an update in more than a year and look how DeSmuMe is kicking no$gba's butt! People who charge money for emulators need a swift kick in the crotch.

Who knows? But I definitely agree with you; PC is the way to go (and some consoles like the Wii) for emulators, since they're way more powerful than any cell phone will ever be. Emulators are legal, yes, but it's still a gray area, and so are the games. If you backed up the game yourself (like ripping a PS2 DVD) then, it's legal. If you distribute that ROM to someone who doesn't own that game, that's illegal. But how someone gets said ROM/ISO is their business.

Hey, I'll even pay for the games that I would emulate on the PC. I just like having an all-in-one solution. It is cool that I can play Nintendo DS games on a laptop for instance, still waiting for a fully functional PSP emulator though.
The 360/PS3 for instance use very different architectures from the PC which is why they will take very long (if at all) to emulate, the same is true with the PS2 right now. So I wish that the future consoles would use more PC-centric architectures so the PC could emulate them, but Sony/MS/Nintendo probably would be afraid of lost hardware sales, they wouldn't lose that much!
I hear the recent arcade cabinets like for Street Fighter 4 and BlazBlue even use ATI/Geforce GPUs and Intel processors, I'd love to see emulators for them and those games are already even ported to the PC! : )

harging money for emulators is downright illegal.
No it's not. Someone wrote a piece of code and this is a free world, he/ahe can charge HIS code as much as he/she wants. It is stupid to do so (especially since people who have hacked their iphones, will never ever want to pay stuff like this) but definitely NOT illegal.

Here's an article about the legality of emulation: http://patpend.net/articles/legality.shtml Still, it might end up being pulled from the iPhone store just like that NES emulator, Nescaline was. I still think it's pretty stupid to charge something I can get for free.

This is a good idea that they really need to make better before they start charging for it. I still think it would be cool if nintendo made a portable game system that could play some gamecube, N64, Snes, and Nes games but I doubt that they're going to do that, they usually just remake them for the newer consoles.
