Xbox live was pretty much created on Halo 2. Also the rabid fanboys, casual players, etc... Halo: Reach will probably be number one next year... until MW3 comes out.

I played the shit out of the bag of win that was MW2, but then I went back to Halo 3. I'm just not a huge fan of running around until you have an encounter that lasts all of 3 seconds.
The shields in Halo lead to a lot more variety in encounters. For many people like myself, more variety equates to a better experience. And that's not even considering the mind-blowing number of unique maps and gametypes that Halo 3 multiplayer has to offer.
I play all the big FPS games that come out, but I always gravitate back to Halo for that simple reason: variety.

Just like those kids who asked for Halo 3 and received Halo 2 instead. That is why that game is still some-what popular on live.
