Are you shocked? Probably not, considering we all knew Final Fantasy XIII would make a killing during the initial week of its release. However, the magnitude of the game's success was still a little alarming. Within its first day on the market, it broke one million units, becoming the best-selling PS3 game in Japan. According to Media Create, the game had reached 1,501,964 units by the end of the week, which more than doubled the life-to-date totals of the platform's previous bestseller, Metal Gear Solid 4. It did so in just four days. Great googly moogly!
As you also might have expected, these unprecedented sales also boosted PS3 sales in the region for the week. The platform's sales leaped, much like a gazelle would leap, from 75,086 units sold to 237,086 units (an increase of 215.75 percent). That's an impressive upshot -- but we're not sure it deserves any gibberish exclamations.

PS3 outsold Wii by just ~45k.

New Super Mario Bros Wii is the reason. Before that game released the PS3 had outsold the Wii for a while then the Wii would go back up a little the next week.

I think what's important to note here is that 1 in every 6 people who bought the game bought a PS3 that week.

I'll bet the amount of times Joystiq has used that image has broken some records as well.

It's probably safe to assume that most people that would buy a console for a specific game have already done so. We are more than 3 years in to this gens life cycle, and since we aren't talking about Japan (where people buy like 3 of each console), then that is a moot point. As for JRPG hate: if you don't like it, don't go on fighting it. I have known lots of people who gave up JRPGs, and I have really declined in playing them as well. This could be due to age, reused cliches, or the emergance of strong Western based RPGs. I'm not sure what each persons reasons are, but one fact remains the same: a good game deserves to be played. I will still play this game, and probably enjoy the crap out of it. In my experience, the FF team does a GREAT job in building an enchanting world that pulls me in to the story, and the combat and leveling are generally very well paced. To me, this adds up to a fun experience. If it doesn't for you, then don't buy it. And at this point in the cycle, I imagine that sales will be greater on the PS3 in N.A, but not by much. This is because most FF fanboys will probably own at least a PS3, if not both consoles, and will want the familiarity of the PS style. Finally: I'm looking forward to a linear-type story. Maybe mix it up a bit. Not every game has to be Dragon Age. And if the characters are endearing and the gameplay enjoyable, then why does it matter if it is linear or not? Also, even the most open world games, and every game for that matter, can only be played one way: how the developers want you to. It has a beginning and an end. How many options they give you may give you the feeling of freedom, but it was still all designed. So, that argument is basically. So what if you finished the game in lane 4 instead of 1? The developers laid out all the lanes anyway! And if they did a good job on lane 1, then it should be just as, if not more, enjoyable.
Finally: It's Christmas! Lets us all enjoy our selected varieties of vidja games!

I for one will be picking up the game on the PS3. It has a lot more extras including a Japanese voice track. I for one would much rather read subtitles than listen to the horrible voice overs done in the United States. At least if it is bad acting in Japanese I won't be able to tell and therefore detract from my gaming experience.

The PS3 version will have Japanese language option? That's pretty cool.
Personally I find that major releases have perfectly acceptable English voice acting. It's only the small budget games that skimp on that stuff.

Even if I had the guts to spend money on a 360, I'd be buying the PS3 version of FFXIII... not because of disc swapping and/or software issues, but because SE said they built FFXIII on the PS3 first, then ported it to 360.
In the past, that always made for a better game on both systems, but also, this hopefully guarantees that story elements, extra content and chunks of the world, among other things, won't be left out due to the 360's limitations and inferior software. Its going to take full advantage of what the PS3 has to offer, then port it to however many discs it takes for the 360.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to it. I love and thoroughly enjoy the series, besides VII which was meh, and expect nothing less from Square's flagship series debuting this gen (which I'm glad is finally coming out, 'cuz I was tired of all the half ass'd mediocre 360 exclusive RPGs coming out).

I hope I like FF13. I've tried several FF games, and none of them have worked for me. In many cases, the games are simply aimed at a too young demographic for me to get into it. Story telling pace has been very slow too.
As for the linearity of the games, I prefer linear games over non-linear ones. All my favorite games have been linear. I don't understand how people get into non-linear games. The enemies are all magically scaling to your level in these games, thus making leveling up (one of the central player objectives of these games) almost irrelevant.

I don't know, but this is hardly a surprise at all. The fans have been waiting for this for quite some time, add to that the built-up hype, merchandise, special edition PS3, it's like a given.
Me? I'll just wait till the price hits greatest hits. A lot of good games become cheap recently (infamous for one), and I'll be busy enough to wait. :) Squenix never gives me a reason to buy their games on release date, especially their main franchise as it's a given that it will become greatest hits.
