Have you seen 360 sales this year? This should lighten the load some. Plus the fact that the installed base is already so large and thus percentage-wise any increase will be further minimized, it really shouldn't be an issue. Besides, they've been through this 5 times or so, they should get it right eventually.

I hate the phrase "Happy Holidays." Are you referring to Flag Day? Administrative Professionals Day? Sweetest Day?

Whether people like it or not, it's CHRISTMAS time, not "holiday" time.

i have, in fact, seen the 360's sales this year. as of the november npd, the xbox still retains a 400,000 unit lead for the year over the ps3. assuming a slightly worse december than last year, it's currently on track to sell around 4-4.5million, pretty much the same as 2008 (which had been the console's best so far).

i'm sorry, you were saying something? all i heard was "i'm a fucking idiot."

@Spartan

Wrong. People say 'Happy Holidays' because this is the commonly know as the 'Holiday Season' including Christmas, Hanukka and New Years Eve/Day.

Kinda stupid to wish someone a 'Merry Christmas" when they don't celebrate it (even though in most cases it's well meaning)

So I'm a fanboy and am insulting MS by pointing out how many units they have sold (note where I mention the installed base)? How stupid can you be?

David:
Assuming sales will remain on track or even close through Xmas seems presumptuous. 360 isn't the big story this year. Either way, even with the sales you state, due to there being 4M more 360 owners before Xmas than there were last year, the percentage increase in users is much lower, in the US it means the number of 360 owners would only grow 33% over the course of the year (from 12M to 16M) instead of 50% (from 8M to 12M). All of this adds up to a proportionally smaller "hump" of users on Xmas day.

And again, as I said, MS has had 5 years to get this right, there's no reason to think they have learned nothing from their past attempts.

As to the stuff about sales. Go ahead and vote me down. 360 sales have not been good this year. You think MS hoped to sell only the same number of units as last year? If you do, you're a fool. And I'm not the one who brought PS3 sales into this. What do PS3 sales have to do with a discussion of whether Xbox Live will go down on Xmas?

Buncha 360 fanboys need to lighten up and realize that not every time someone says something less than fawning about the 360, it doesn't mean they're insulting you personally or even putting down the platform.

I never downloaded Undertow during the free window. Oh well. I kind of doubt XBL is going to have huge issues this year. If the 4+million people who bought MW2 at launch didn't crush XBL, I don't really think a few more copies for Christmas will.

Live had a lot of issues in 2007, largely because of Halo 3's launch and all the consoles that sold. I really doubt they'll have issues, since they've done a lot of expansions server-side this year.

I hope there's a free game-worthy outage this year. I probably wouldn't turn the 360 on in that time anyway since there's nothing to play on it this year.

I doubt it. No doubt PS3 sales have gone way up but there are very few online-centric titles on the PS3 and most of the hits are probably going to play offline for the most part.

@CaramelZappa Are you a FUD spokesperson for Microsoft or something ?

There are very few online centric games on the ps3 ? Really ? Seriously?

Mag is 256player onine only

Resistance 2 has 64 player online

Killzone 2 32 player online ..

What about modern warfare 2 that is on the PSN..

Infact the PSN has probably more subscribers than than XBL because its FREE, so practically every PS3 user uses PSN .. Unlike xbox live gold..

Oh yeah furthermore theres this thing called HOME that is also completely online..

What about Socom ? What about WarHawk ?

You do realise you could buy full games on PSN from day 1 and PSN could cope with it ?

All of those people that just got a PS3, you dont think they will sign up to a free PSN service ? no, why would they right ? They more than likely have gotten uncharted 2 and does that have an online.. Why yes it also does.. or Modern Warfare 2 why again yes that does have an online...

All that remains to be asked is are you in any way affiliated with Microsoft ? Your not Aaron Greenberg or 1 of his cronies now are you ?

Further more I buy all of my online multiplayer games on the PS3 because it is free , all of my mates buy it for the ps3 because its FREE..

Dude every freaking PS3 owner will sign up to PSN first day and be logging into the shop and taking a look around online.. Are you trying to tell me that your initial reaction to getting the PS3 wasnt to connect it up to the NET and see what it has and what it could do online? It has builtin wifi and ethernet are you telling me most people wouldnt plug it in and sign up to a free service ?

Remember it only does everything ...

@HoHoHo:

I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that the average PS3 user's first actions /won't/ be to connect to PSN... it's not really quite as integrated with the PS3 experience as Live is for X-Box.

Yeah it didn't feel like it was only a year ago. But yeah Undertow was terrible and not worth all the hassle it caused. But when you're as huge as Live is, you're gonna get the ocassional hiccup.

I'm glad they're ready now, cause Borderlands and MW2 aren't gonna play themselves online...

Live has had 1 big problem in 9 years of existence. PSN hasn't had as big of a meltdown as that 1 Live had, but PSN is down much more frequently and it's only been around 3 years

But you get what you pay for right?
