Some people have decried the current calendar year for being light on high-quality games -- but they can't frown upon the quantity of titles released in 2009. According to Gamespot, the latest EEDAR GamePulse report reveals that 1,099 games were released to retail outlets throughout the year -- a slight increase over the 1,092 games which hit the market in 2008.
That's not exactly good news -- according to the report, more games (such as Modern Warfare 2) are becoming permanent staples on store shelves, limiting the amount of free space for other new titles. Also, the amount of expendable cash folks have to spend on these games is dwindling. But ... but let's not think about that, okay? It's Christmas. Happy thoughts, you guys.

Heh. 1099 games? That's more than the whole libraries of some consoles. Which is a shame to be honest because 90% of those games is crapware. :/

Yeah, that's larger than the Xbox library, the Dreamcast library, the Saturn library, the N64 library...

That's cause the industry's growing in popularity. I remember back in the N64 days, you actually had to be at the store (toys r us for me) at the release date or close to it because they often sold out their initial shipment and wouldn't get another for a week or even two.
Also for people who complain about games being expensive nowadays, I remember forking over at least $70 for ocarina of time and a few other N64 games. Some even ran $80...

the current gen CONSOLE systems are slightly more than the year before, but yeah, I'm sure there's a bunch of shovelware in those figures--especially the Wii, DS, and PS2. I don't mind the decreased shelf space, I have a hard time keeping up with all the AAA titles alone for the PSWii60....can Squeenix delay FFXIII a little longer please?!

Heck, the Virtua Racing port for the Genesis was 100 bucks. 32X titles averaged 70, some of Square's SNES releases were 80, etc.

Accounting for inflation games should actually cost close to $100 a piece right now.

Is everyone forgetting that, GAMES ARE ON CDS NOW! When they were on cartridges alot more when into creating them. It took more expensive materials, and took longer.
Then there is the Demand factor, people usually buy 1 every month, and there are alot more people buying them. For example, part of the reason cars cost so much to make is because you buy one every 5-10 years, so it's price is highly inflated past cost, if everyone bought a new car every month. They would be no more then a few hundred past their cost to make (which is a few thousand) anyway...
On Topic: I wonder if this includes Multi-console releases. A Thousand seems like ALOT seeing as I only played IDK 20 games this year. Even for people who play 100 games (2 games a week) they barely scratch the surface...plus they didn't take in account all the digital games, for the XBLA/PSN, Steam or iPhone. Man there are alot of games.

All the Hero games released during the year make up the difference.
Because 09 had GH5, Metallica, Van Halen, Smash Hits, Band Hero, On Tour: Modern Hits & DJ Hero.
Just an observation. :)

I know better than to mess with a man who could have Tony Hawk show up to my house and have him beat me to death with a Tony Hawk: Ride skateboard peripheral.
If this was to occur, I would first admit to Tony Hawk that I will be going into the beating with negative expectations, and as such I probably won't give the beating a fair review.

This year sucked. Everything was a sequel or rip-off, or if it wasn't a sequel, it was undercooked (Demon's Souls).

Eh, i can attest to that. I bought and received more titles in 09 than is usual for me, even since i've become a more active purchaser of videogames. Compared to prior years, it was light on the truly awe-inspiring experiences, but i can't complain at all. I had to play Spirit Tracks 4 hours straight the other day to get it out of the way for the game i got today...

I'm actually getting tired of two or more AAA titles per month. I cannot afford it and I find myself playing one AAA game during the month and I don't get around to playing the other 2nd or 3rd AAA title at all. I'm getting tired of this and I miss the old days where there was a hand full of triple AAA titles per year.
As my 2010 New Years Resolution I am buying the best of the best AAA title for the month. I think the video game industry is going overboard and soon there could be another video game crash, like there was in 1983. Look up the video game crash of 1983 on wikipedia.

How many of those games are multi-platform releases? About 40%? I'd imagine the "real" number is more like 500-600 than 1,099.

Can you get cash for games in the US? I know that Gamestop is in Europe because it's selling 360s in €. But in the UK to get cash for games or consoles you have to take 3 forms of ID, one of which MUST have a photo of you, and you must be over 21, no matter what the rating of the game.
Or you can trade them in for vouchers to that store. It's pretty pointless if you want cash.

2008 had more quality games then 2009 in my opinion, 2010 stole most of them away from 2009.
