Spinning off of the annual 3D Entertainment Summit, Unicomm announced intentions late last week to launch the "3D Gaming Summit" in April 2010. Headed up by former head of the Hollywood Reporter Bob Dowling and Connecticut-based event management company Unicomm, the two-day event is set for April 21 and 22 at the Hilton Universal City in Los Angeles. According to a press release issued by Unicomm, the summit's aim is to "attract the brightest minds in the gaming industry" and "define the market opportunity for 3D stereoscopic gaming and entertainment."
"Consumers are leading the way to pervasive 3D entertainment," commented Unicomm CEO John Golicz, lest we forget that 40 million of us will have the new technology within the next four years (there might even be something in your house capable of 3D film viewing right this minute!). Though the release didn't specify any major gaming publishers or developers signed on for the event, it noted that "key sponsors" will help to "highlight 3D gaming technology." We might still be skeptical, but after what we saw last year at CES from Sony, and our recent IMAX 3D experience with James Cameron's Avatar, we're (at very least) interested in what 3D tech in gaming has to offer.

That's how it works. Always takes one great implementation to make people fall in love with the technology.

Avatar's 3D is the definition of immersive. It pushes stuff AWAY from you instead of making things pop out at you. Instead of having things coming out of the screen, it made things look like they were beyond the screen, and that the screen was a hole in the wall allowing us to see it, like a stage. THAT is what makes things immersive, the illusion of depth. Gimmick 3D makes everything look flat while occasionally having something fly out at you, making it obvious that the makers were taking advantage of the 3D. Since avatar's #d makes it look like stuff is a distance away, a better "something flying toward the audience" illusion is made when something onsceen actually comes closer to it. Avatar never uses 3D "just becase it has it". It also takes care of the lighting problem by making a 3D showing brighter.

I like how the progression of video game graphics have gone from 2D to 3D to 3D-er.

Until we have real holograms like you see in all those sci-fi movies we don't have 3d. We just have a perception trick. And the only way I would even play any of this stereoscopic or whatever it's called 3d is if they made contacts I could put in my eyes. The glasses look freaking stupid. And even more stupid when you wear them with the lights off. Cory Hart?

Yeah! The only way I'M playing these so called "3D" games is if I have to put contact lenses on my eyeballs every time I want to play!

You are the only person with enough money to implement 3D at home. Hell, even Alfred's quarters probably have a 3D capable TV.

Bananaboat: 3d capable TVs have been out for a few years and have SOLD tons yet most people don't even know they can do 3d. A huge chunk of Samsung and Mits DLPs sold since 07 have been 3d ready.

After watching Avatar, 3D gaming might not be such a bad idea after all.

In my mind this summit consists of two guys sitting in a Denny's. The first guy calls the summit to order, and asks the second guy to give the opening speech. The opening speech consists of only a few words, and ends with "and that is why no one is gaming in 3D, thank you." The two gentlemen then retire to drown their sorrows at the local pub.

The problem with 3d gaming is that in all their implementations so far, there are at least a certain section of the public which cannot handle 3d and have nauseating feelings. It will change obviously and game designers will know how to implement proper 3d but I think that will take at least 10-15 years more.

Just wanted to chime in on my thoughts. I recently bought a new vid card, and the 3D vision kit for my TV. It really makes the games much more enjoyable and immersive. Batman Arkham Asylum is the best implementation I have seen with the technology since my purchase. I felt I enjoyed the tech much more with shooters and action games. RPG's not so much because of longer droughts between aciton segments. It just began to feel tedious.
For anyone curious, I suggest giving it a try. However, the price of admission can be a bit much depending on the tech you have pre 3d Vision kit. For me though, the price was well worth it.

I have a Geforce GTX 285 but I don't want to give up my existing 28" 1920x1200 display right now for those 3D monitors that are 22" and 1680x1050.
I've heard that 120hz HDTVs and 120hz computer monitors are different, that TVs only fake it and so can't really run 3D like PC monitors.
I'm still not buying the 3D tech, but haven't tried it out either. ; D

Dragon Age: Origins, Far Cry 2, and Mass Effect are also excellent. I'm playing through Grand Theft Auto 4 now, too. For this game, I sometimes have to turn off 3D (CTRL-T) for cut scenes that have faces that are supposed to be about 2 inches from the camera. No other games have these cut scenes... strangely just GTA4. Maybe they thought that made the cut scenes more intense.
Anyhow, TONS of games work well... I've just bought Batman Arkahm Asylum, Ghostbusters, and Star Wars: KOTOR.... which are also supposed to be excellent with 3D. Enjoy having 3D a year or two before the rest of the public re-discovers it. For now, you can still WOW your friends and relatives with it. :)

@ nerdydesi
A majority of the HDTV's out now claim the 120hz tag, but it isn't true 120hz. From what I've read they basically insert artificial frames to make the picture appear smoother, thats it. A TV that has TRUE 120hz input and output is capable of the 3D tech. Most DLP's and some Plamsma TVs are capable of this feature, so you can still get your high resolution (1920x1080) with a slice of 3D on the side. Next year you will start seeing big screen LCD's enter the arena with this feature. TRUE 120Hz TV's will start to become as mainstream as the fake 120hz TV's in the coming years.

It is so refreshing to hear how many people's opinions have changed on 3D entertainment, post-Avatar. I've been re-buying my 360 games on PC so I can replay them in 3D with my NV 3D Vision. (Samsung 2233rz)
3D offers an awesome, additional level of immersion... I can't wait to buy a 3D HDTV. I'm going to have to suck it up and buy a PS3 it seems, too.

those 3d capable tvs are great I got to play on one at PAX this year. But I just got a flat screen and there is no way I am going to buy an even more expensive 3d tv just for a couple of games. I someone should tell those game developers that we need better games not games with gimmicks
