Aside from efforts like The Conduit and Call of Duty: World at War, Nintendo's Wii hasn't exactly enjoyed a glut of capable FPS titles. According to a recent interview with games™ (via NowGamer), Zelda director Eiji Aonuma recognizes this -- and sees great potential for fixing that problem in Link's Crossbow Training, the pack-in minigame included with the Wii Zapper. "To tell you the truth, I actually wanted to create Link's Crossbow Training 2 ... I thought that we should do something more and better in the field of the first-person shooter." Wait, haven't we heard this before?
Unfortunately for Aonuma, the execs above him at Nintendo didn't think much of the idea, nixing it in favor of a completely new entry in the Zelda series. "I was thinking that maybe we could intensify the multiplayer mode ... [but] a lot of people inside Nintendo insisted that I should work on a new Legend of Zelda title." We're sorry about that, Mr. Aonuma! And to the Nintendo executives who killed a sequel to Link's Crossbow Training, we'd like to personally thank you.

How is calling a 3rd person action game an FPS a joke? Are you talking about his aside, "(no, we couldn't help it)" because I'm pretty sure that was about using the word "Wiimake."

While I beat the game in probably two hours, I enjoyed Link's Crossbow Training. But still, it would be inappropriate to call the game an actual "GAME". It was more of an experience for a peripheral that is barely ever implemented in any Nintendo games today. That being said, I think it seems strange and unnecessary to give this game a sequel, even if I did enjoy it, which I really did. Then there will be people that will say "Wii Sports wasn't really a 'game', and that got a sequel", but that had tons of replay value. I'm up for anything Zelda related, but I think that instead of focusing on another experience, we need that true Zelda game that's supposed to come out next year.

I really enjoyed Link's Crossbow Training. For what it was (a tech demo of the Wii Zapper), it worked very well. For being a pack-in freebie (or a $20 game with a plastic shell, however you want to look at it), I felt like I got my money's worth. A full-blown sequel (with the depth and length of a full game) sounds promising to me.

I'm going to overreact to this simple well meant statement and take it out of proportion, but a sentence like this is really telling, and so infinitely annoying. Thank Nintendo for what? Another iteration of the Zelda 3D series as opposed to a more interesting spin on the actual alternative potential of the Wii Remote peripherals?
I haven't actually played Crossbow Training because the lack of general support for some of the Wii peripherals have turned me away from the ones I'm less inherently interested in - I know that my looking over them is basically encouraging their premature demise, but I don't see my individual purchase making any large influence - but had a second and more expansive CT come out along with a slew of other games supporting things like the gun shell and wheel, I'd be more inclined to buy them. Yes, games like these are clumsy and pale in comparison even to mediocre franchise iterations of the same thing for the tenth time, but don't forget those games weren't without their flaws at the start and a myriad of them have aged horribly. This is a direct and obvious example where consumer purchases have encouraged another standard game sequel rather than a genuine experimentation, and the sentiment that caused it is simultaneously smug in a misplaced manner and horribly oblivious to the consequences of its narrow train of thought.
Again, I'm intentionally overreacting (not to 'troll', just to illustrate my point better - your local newspaper's editorial pages are full of this manner of expression) and as much as I hated Twilight Princess and lament the lack of interest in games like Crossbow Training, I'm essentially walking in lockstep with the rest of us. I just wished there'd be more realization within the hivemind what exactly this train of thought is reinforcing and discouraging when a company decides it's time to put out a new game.

No, I could see where you don't want another 3D Zelda title.
But the answer is for Shiggy to make a glorious comeback with a 2D Zelda title.

dude i know the legend of zelda sucked (ESPECIALLY THE ENDING!!!), but that's no reason to hate a legend of zelda 3D title. just look at the legend of zelda: the windwaker. that's a great game. i actually enjoyed it a lot. but the legend of zelda: Twilight Princess had so many flaws with its storyline it made the game suck and that's only one reason it sucks. the wiimote in general sucks to me because its weird, hard to use, and you have to move your thumb too much. the only good thing about it (that no gaming company utilizes because they're complete morons) is the ability to dual-weild two wiimotes. the wiimote probably infuenbced the sucking only half way. most of it came from rediculous temples (especially the ice and water temples) that are so boring its stupid. resident evil 3: nemesis utilizes the concept of getting keys by doing something then using that key to get another key perfectly. the legend of zelda: twilight princess failed at that concept causing most of its demise plus there's only one thing to do at a time most of the game. the legend of zelda: the windwaker used that concept pretty well.

Well, the first two are *cough Wiimakes cough*, and the third is considered a First Person Shooter with Action-Adventure elements.
Plus there are third-person sequences.

Yeah, with the Morph Ball Metroid Prime isn't a true first-peson shooter. And neither is Halo, Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, or any game which removes the camera from the eyes of the playing character. Which leaves solely Half-Life 2 as the only true first-person shooter. And I'm okay with that!

WiiWare maybe? I'm sure they could increase their own download limit for this game if need be.
As Nick says - Metroid Prime Trilogy is FPS adventure. Aren't there on rails shooters that are FPS as well.
Talking about Wii - how in the sweet hell did Dead Space Extraction get Wii GOTY in Gamespot (apart from DSE paying them of course which is highly possible)?

Really, you would have given wii goty to Wii Sports Resort over....anything else???
Demon's Souls is an odd choice for overall goty, but at least it didn't go to Uncharted or even MW2. I can live with any other choice.

As good as Uncharted 2 was, I still give my GotY to Killzone 2. But being released in February has pretty well kept it off the radar.

I gotta disagree, Wii Sports Resorts was alright.
Demon's Souls is not a good choice for GOTY. Assassin's Creed 2 or Uncharted 2 are better choices. I'm not saying DS is a bad game (it's fucking great), there's just better games than that.

Yeah I hate when titles get overlooked because they came out earlier, which is hypocritical because the same media that ignores them are the ones who bitch about everything coming out in Fall. I've been replaying Killzone and it's fucking great.
I'm worried Mass Effect 2 will get overlooked too for next year's awards. I mean, it's pretty much a lock for all the RPG of the year awards, but will probably get overlooked for goty. Athough next year it seems like everything is coming out in spring so maybe it won't get overlooked

Yeah, a lot is coming out in the spring, but the end of the year still has Reach (probably won't get GotY, no matter how good it is) Treyarch's latest CoD, Gears 3, Fable III, and a few others, I'm sure.
A lot of people hit on Killzone 2 for not being original enough, but it took everything about a shooter and did it damn well. And actually innovated control wise.

I highly doubt Mass Effect will be overlooked.
A lot of highly anticipated and lots of major titles are coming in Q1 2010. From how good ME1 was and how awesome the trailers and videos are, there's no doubt ME2 will be one of the, if not best game of 2010 (I know I'm speaking early), so it will be hard to overlook.

Most of what we know of is set for earlier in the year, but 2010 is going to have a mean 2nd half. Nintendo's going to have at least 2 heavy hitters for the holiday, Halo Reach will be there, as well as Natal's launch lineup, and that's probably when we'll see the Last Guardian

I doubt they were entirely serious. Zelda Wii was in development before Crossbow Training came out (we know it started soon after Twilight Princess ended, though serious gameplay development can't have started before early 2008)
A lot of what Aonuma has said has been rather speculous lately.

how can anyone say a gun shaped or wheel shaped piece of plastic makes a game better. THEY DONT DO ANYHING. the wiimote is still doing all the work. the zapper and wheel probably cost nintendo like $2 and they sell them to tons of idiots for $15 and $20. the motion plus, balance board, and wii speak are all electronics that actually do stuff thats why i have no beef with them.

Well, you could also say that they don't force you to buy them. They're not really required to enjoy games, whereas MotionPlus, WiiSpeak and the Balance Board are all integral to some of the games.

I'd would have loved to have both. Nintendo can put "Legend of Zelda" in the title of anything and make money, yes even Wind Waker (which I agree was the weakest Zelda to date, mostly cause of the near end).
