Last year, TorrentFreak awarded Spore the dubious title of Most Pirated Game of 2008 -- this year, the victor (by an overwhelming margin) is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. According to the torrent news site's calculations, the PC version of Infinity Ward's shooter was unscrupulously downloaded 4.1 million times. When combined with the 360 version of the game, that number tops five million. Looks like boycotts do work! And by "boycotts," we of course mean, "mankind's overwhelming desire to get things for free through easily accessible, barely regulated channels."

Big suprise? It was also the biggest selling game at launch than anything before it. Popular games get pirated more, I never would have guessed.

While you are correct about popular games being pirated more, I believe that the campaign to pirate the game if dedicated servers weren't added had a little more to do with this.

This reported is way predicted. Modern Warfare II in UK is played like its the only game in town. Honestly, M2 II sales go insanely-high, it even beat the record of Grand Theft Auto IV. And because of that MWII has been the prime-star for piracy. Just hearing the '1 million xbox gamers being banned by Microsoft' is just a proof that MW2 played a big role for that smiting act. Details about MW2 Piracy: http://bit.ly/one-million-players-banned-on-playing-modern-warfare-2
That's what you get for free play, right?

" Considering the reported PC sales of 90k, I'd say this is actually more relevant to the so-called "boycott." "
--
I don't know where people pull these random numbers from but Modern Warfare 2 lived on Steams #1 spot since release, and has been in the top 5 every day during Steam holiday special days..

Despite the boycott, the PC versions first-week sales topped COD4 and COD5: World at War.
Robert Bowling - "The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has actually outsold the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in it's first week.
Essentially, all this percentage proves is that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions sold great, not that the PC version sold poorly, because that's actually not the case. The PC version has done tremendous in it's first week, better than our previous game."

The 90k number was retail, disc based sales, not online sales.

Or Kennedy and Johnson, who spent them in Vietnam. Or Truman who spent them in Korea. Or Roosevelt who spent them in WWII. Don't forget Wilson, in WWI.

Keep your opinions to yourself, calling someone "stupid" for supporting or not supporting a political party of their choice is extremely ignorant, and if anything you come off a lot more "stupid" than he does.
Regardless, everyone stick on topic here. Political arguments don't belong here.

Hey I didn't say any of them was right either. The man is spending my hard earned money on people and corporations who I don't feel deserve it.
Why should I have to pay for someone else's health care? Why should my money go to bail out failed businesses?
I was just commenting about the spending thing to be witty and I don't want to get into a political argument either but maybe one day when you build a career and see your money going to waste through no fault of your own you'll understand.

There probably would have been a large decrease if IF weren't assholes and didn't remove dedicated servers.

I don't know anything about the PC version, but doesn't the requirement for dedicated servers allow them to let only 'authorized' copies online? That's where the fun is anyway.

It's the same for the PC. The best part is, the same community that cracks these games is also responsible for creating dedicated servers. It's basically a giant FUCK YOU to IW.

That's precisely the point. It shows that if IW is going to force local hosting on people, the PC crowd WILL hack the game and create their own servers, just like they did with all the virtual LAN for WC3, Diablo, SC, and the rest. Even Steam games are hacked pretty easily. Frik, even WoW has private server with hundreds or thousands on it. Why they even think that an FPS couldn't be hacked is beyond me.

Sadly so was I. I thought about buying it, so I did. For the 360. But now that there's a multiplayer crack it's really hard to convince myself to give money to the company that stabbed me in the back- considering I bought Call of Duty 1,2,3 (3 was not on PC, but that was Treyarch).
Sigh, what happened IW. MOAR BLAME ON ACTIVISION!

Oh I also bought COD, COD2 and COD: WaW. I would have picked up 3 if it ever came to PC and was excited as hell for Modern Warfare 2 before Infinity Ward started being a dick pre-release.
Also having now finished the single player campaign I can say that IMO it was terrible, especially the story. Shephards reasoning was some epic retardation, did Infinity Ward fire their writers/mission designers from COD4?

It's not entitlement. It's a way of giving them the finger.
Even if you don't bother playing it, your download is one more contributed to one giant middle finger.
And before you start, no, I don't care if they don't release MW3 for PC. I'd prefer they stayed away from the platform if they're going to try and ruin everything that makes the platform great.
