Last year, TorrentFreak awarded Spore the dubious title of Most Pirated Game of 2008 -- this year, the victor (by an overwhelming margin) is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. According to the torrent news site's calculations, the PC version of Infinity Ward's shooter was unscrupulously downloaded 4.1 million times. When combined with the 360 version of the game, that number tops five million. Looks like boycotts do work! And by "boycotts," we of course mean, "mankind's overwhelming desire to get things for free through easily accessible, barely regulated channels."

Doesn't matter because thats the excuse many are likely to use whether it's true or not. Obtrusive DRM was never a reason to pirate in the first place.

Of course, sort of like PC gamers were bitching about Dragon Age...
...oh wait. We weren't. It's selling great.
Oh and we're always talking about ways to pirate Bad Company 2...
...oh wait. No we're not.
Fuck off, retards. Just because you like taking it in the ass from Bobby Kotick doesn't mean the rest of us should.

Tmac,
"They deserve to be mistreated."
Do I deserve to be mistreated? I have at least 45 PC games in my collection, and every single one of them was purchased legitimately (even when some have limited activations). I've never once pirated a game nor will I consider it an option in the future; developers who make the games I want get my financial support, those that don't lose a sale to their competitors, and I refuse to contribute to the stigma associated with my favorite platform. I've been and remain one of the most vocal MW2 PC critics on this site. I refuse to buy it, I refuse to play it, and I refuse to pirate it. The money I was going to spend on Infinity Ward's game went straight to Valve (L4D2 twice) and Runic Games (Torchlight). So, I ask again, do I and people like me deserve to be mistreated? If I were you, I wouldn't make such gross generalizations; it's more than unfair to burn down an entire orchard and salt the earth so nothing grows there again just because a few bad apples were found.

You need a serious reality check, I've been a PC gamer for about 15 years now, I purchased every top-title PC game released in 2008. THIS SEASON ALONE--between Dragon Age, L4D2, Force Unleashed and the hordes of titles I've scooped up on Steam since December-- I've likely spent more than either you or tmacjordanwannabe have spent ALL YEAR (And still, no doubt, managed to engage in more incidences of coitus than both of you combined)!
PC gamers are fiercely loyal and will put hard earned cash down for a worthy product--especially from a developer/publisher that actually cares about the platform. What PC gamers (generally) will NOT do, is sit idly by while publishers force out the options we expect and demand as users of the platform. A PS3 buyer, for example, purchases a game he or she expects to take advantage of the Cell and RSX, and would certainly have a problem purchasing a game that looked like a bad Wii port. Stripping dedicated servers, reducing customizable graphics options, limiting multi-player to 9v9, charging a $10 premium for a standard game with no additional content, and completely eschewing standard practices for the platform--all the while ignoring the negative community sentiment and blowing it all off as unimportant... these decisions are practically tantamount to Microsoft releasing the next incarnation of Halo running 16-bit graphics at 12FPS...

You guys make me face palm. I'm not speaking from a "console only" player, I'm a hardcore PCgamer as well. But, why would I defend the community that is ruining it? People are CONSTANTLY stealing games (it is a fact) and it is not just the games that "deserve" it (look at demigod)... I just find it insane when REAL PCgamers defend pirates like they are tiny little kittens that are just trying to find some milk. Come on.
And stating: "A PS3 buyer, for example, purchases a game he or she expects to take advantage of the Cell and RSX," Yea of course I love when developers fully utilize the powers of the PS3, but I'm not going to go STEAL the game from the store if they don't. Baby toast sauce... *face palm*

DarkNess, don't be stupid. Piracy does not take THE CODE AWAY FROM THE DEVELOPER. This would be an entirely different story if the developer was losing something, but they aren't.
Really you need to re-evaluate your terrible example there. I mean, christ, I get it -- Piracy is bad. However stop claiming it is something it isn't.

IW really dicked the dog on this one. That's all there is to it.

Irony is the pirated version is much better supported than the actual retail version. IW, when will you admit you we're wrong about removing dedicated servers.
And all those pirates who were thinking of buying the game, found out they could play with legitimate owners. That just took em off the rails.
I'm glad I didn't buy this trashy game. Not even downloaded it. It's not worth the 10GB/60 Dollars for all this BS.

Explanation: Master, I am merely trying to say that PC gamers are mad that they got a version of the game, that is practically a port of the 360 version (it even mentioned connecting to xbox live), as well as losing dedicated servers. However, when such a huge number of PC meatbags are using pirated versions, it's not really that surprising that Infinity Ward didn't do something special for them.

And it's not theft, it's copyright infringement. Theft implys that the owner loses a copy which they do not with piracy. The most they lose is a "potential sale" which is just stupid media speak half of the time as most pirates aren't ever going to be potential customers.

Except, you know, it's not.
It's still illegal but stealing and copyright infringement are two separate things. I'm not saying its right or wrong but it is different than walking in and actually stealing the physical copy its self.
Stealing:
- Physical Copy (lost money for producer)
+ copy to the thief.
Infringment:
+ Copy to the thief.
- "Sale" to the producer.
They do not actually lose money in piracy, only POTENTIAL money. They do (or if you want to be technical, the store) lose money in theft.

Agree. Theft implies that the publisher is losing something through your action, in this case, all they're losing is a potential sale (since the economics of piracy can be debated, as to how many of those millions of pirated games could have become sales)
Doesn't make it *right* of course, but neither does it make it theft.

I bought my copy of the game. but I refuse to even play a second rate PC title that is MW2. Infinity Ward and Activision did everything in their power to make people move away from the PC and it's working.
How many units has it sold on PC at this point? 1million? That's less then the PS3. Sad really.
The blatant disregard to the PC users wants and needs makes me understand why people aren't buying the game. It's a buggy, and poorly put together when it comes to the menus. The devs don't care about PC. So why should the PC users care about the devs?
Make good quality games and the users will flock to it.

So true, though substitute "good quality" for "dedicated servers" and I'm sure that would have taken the piracy numbers down a notch.
What this survey doesn't highlight though is the growing problem of 360 piracy. While PC pirates use torrents (path of least resistance I assume) many 360 users pirate off Rapidshare and Usenet. Include those numbers and I'd like to see how quickly the gap between PC & 360 piracy is closed.

Looking at the sales of the game, logic can dictate that piracy won't affect official sales of the game, assuming that the game is good. But of course this idea doesn't bode well for the DRM loving industry (including the music and movie industry)

Nadril plan and simple. If you obtain a product and use it without paying for the product, its stealing. You can call it what you want but you do understand about not paying for a product that has a cost. There are people that that get paid to make thee product, there are people that get paid to bring that product to market. If everyone though as you then no one would pay for a product thus putting millions out of a job destroying their families etc. Stop acting like software is any different from any other product. There are developers that go out of business all the time and I am sure they would have an issue with your warp point of view.
If people believe that Piracy on the PC for games cannot be stop, you are in for a rude awakening. Game steaming technology is right around the corner and the move IW has made is going towards that technology. Pretty soon, PC games will have most of the code on servers that is complied and delivered to the host system. This will kill PC piracy and will be the new model going forward. If you only look at today, IW decision looks like it was a shot in the dark, but if you really look towards the future, the first thing you have to do is get the network up and running, the next stage will be that PC gamers have to be online in order to play the game. The last step will be that portion of the game will be streamed to you in order to play the game.

>> "There are people that that get paid to make thee product, there are people that get paid to bring that product to market. "
Absolutely, and the developers get paid before the product even hits the shelves, then the publisher takes the lion's share for the developer's hard work... Same with the music industry-- For example, a musician makes a album, but actually gets paid practically nothing for the sale of said album, the distributors, stores, producers and publishers make all the money off of the musician's labor and talent.
>> "There are developers that go out of business all the time and I am sure they would have an issue with your warp point of view."
Developers are FAR more likely to go out of business for not meeting deadlines set on them by publishers, not meeting publishers demands, or not producing a game sales volumes don't meet a publisher's expectations than piracy. Piracy really has the greatest impact on small developers, who rely on game sales directly to support their future projects... not devs like Infinity Ward, who are feeding from the bottomless Activision trough...
>> "The last step will be that portion of the game will be streamed to you in order to play the game"
You say this as if game-streaming only effects PC gaming. You're an absolute tool if you don't think the next stage of console gaming will also be online only based. Piracy is not pushing games toward online only distribution/rental models, THE DESIRE FOR PROFIT is. You really need to go watch the demonstration OnLive gave to Columbia University. It demonstrates that, if online gaming systems like OnLive take off, the streaming model will threaten both PC AND CONSOLE gaming as we know it-- but such systems will impact CONSOLE gaming more (primarily because console gamers are already accustomed to purchasing glorified DRM units and closed-system boxes, so the adoption rate of game-streaming systems among console gamers will be higher).
And if you think Piracy is really hurting the Developers and Publishers, I REALLY hope you never buy used games from GameStop, because game-resale hurts the industry just as much as piracy. In the case of piracy, a pirated game does not equal a lost sale, however, in the case of game resale, a game re-sale operation directly intercepts a money-exchange between the publisher and consumer. Why do you think there's been such a massive push for DLC? A primary reason is to keep console gamers from RESELLING THEIR GAMES--which "robs" the publishers you feel so sorry for.

@mikemaj82 - yes, it is. MUCH higher resolution (PS3 couldn't even squeak out 720P in GTAIV!), FSAA, MUCH better textures, faster gameplay, MUCH faster loading times, ability to switch between keyboard and gamepad on the fly for max precision shooting and high control driving... You've been sucking down the PS3 PR koolaid for so long, it has clearly started to have an ill affect on your ability to actually process thought.
I've already gone over how the BluRay is not really much of an advantage for gaming (unless you're playing a game with over 4 hours of uncompressed CUTSCENES *cough MSG4 cough cough*) in previous posts, but allow me to take you back to the classroom: First, BluRay's load times are horrible, which is why so many PS3 games require a hard-disk install and STILL incur slower load times--in most cases--than a 360 reading straight off the optical disc; Second, even though IN THEORY developers can add higher textures and such, they rarely do because the memory limitations of the PS3 graphics architecture nullify the potential advantage; Third, against the 360, the BluRay medium MIGHT be a plus in terms of allowing additional content, but against a PC with a high capacity hard drive, again, there is no BluRay advantage.
And about needing to upgrade every 3 months? Whatever, dude, you clearly have no idea what you're on about. A gamer can run 99% of today's games on 3 year old PC parts at higher resolutions, with higher texture and better visual-effect settings than the current batch of consoles. Hell, a 2 year old 8800GT paired with a 3 year old Core 2 Duo is more than enough to max out most games-- with full AA --at resolutions that would make a PS3 weep! PC gamers rarely HAVE to upgrade (especially for the current crop of titles), most of the time we do it because we LIKE to. Most of us really don't need much of an excuse to crack open the belly of the beast and play around in its guts...
And, I hope to god you didn't pay full, original retail price for your PS3, the peripherals and the new HD TV you would've had to buy to take advantage of your 720P experience, while you're b*tchin' about how expensive PC upgrading is...
When'd you say your birthday was again?
