Since you used the word, do you really need a game console and all of those video games? What about the television or monitor you play them on? Spending a few measly space bucks on virtual Avatar or Home items hurts no one.

i seriously dont know where engadget is getting at there but the PS2 was released and was successful for the WHOLE decade. And considering the ps2's aging technology, it is truly amazing that it is still selling and have had literally twice or maybe three times as much excellent games as the games we get now.

What the 360 did however, is that it has proven that a gaming console could be more that just for gaming, but it can be a media device. however, considering that the 360 was released in a time where internet is more advanced, and media is a huge factor, it's technology is still somehow new.

And besides, over the life span of the PS2, microsoft has released TWO consoles. The original Xbox is the PS2's REAL competition, however, it only appealed to a small crowd. Therefore, Microsoft have learned from it mistakes and made the 360 which corrected the wrongs of their first try.

Also, Microsoft did not invent Console Online Gaming. Sony pushed the PS2's capabilities by adding this feature to their console and it worked fine. it may be NOT be the best but it did however accomplished what it was made to do. Also, the 360's online is an improved Online of the original Xbox.

The conclusion here is that the PS2 shaped this decade and has set the stage for the third generation of consoles like the use of DVD's for games and motion gaming (the eyetoy, but it was not very successful but it did make a stand point for motion controlled gaming) and it's also the starting ground for Classic Games that has been released for it. However, what the 360 did was take all of the ideas and make them better and add a bunch of original features that made the 360 what it is today.

@solarshadows074 I'm not sure I'd count the PS2's online capabilities for much, and I'm not sure what you're getting at with the Xbox not being the first online console and then segueing into the PS2's online. Are you trying to say the PS2's online was first? Because the Dreamcast truly pioneered online on console but including a modem with every system, and have a good online service complete with it's own dial-up internet service provider.

im actually more in favour of the PS2. what i was trying to say is that the ps2 deserved the spot more than the xbox 360 because it truly shaped the decade by setting the stage for newer consoles and introducing features that has been improved upon for consoles today.

yeah no one but your wallet, do you think microsoft is happy because they give fun and happiness to the people?? they are happy because now they can drain all the money they want from you, even though you already paid for a game, virtual stuff yeah right too bad that virtual stuff is only going to get more and more expensive and that´s going to be paid with your non virtual money, that´s the important point for microsoft, not your entertainment. But good thing you are happy with it, sooner or later they are going to charge for the virtual energy that you use and guess what? nobody is going to complain, that´s how easy they get us... with just a few virtual pieces of garbage that was our price.....

@hunter:

Microsoft invented a mind control device forcing people to buy DLC???

Oh wait, they didn't. I've yet to buy any DLC/extra content/avatars/etc. since I just don't believe it it. Nobody forces you to buy DLC. And if you really don't want to buy DLC, get a PC (custom maps/skins for free).

In other words, you have bigger problems if you can't help but buy DLC on PS3/360.

no they didn´t, they invented something 2,000 times better. XLive GOLD something that even sony is starting to see as a good idea, do you want to play there??? good just pay, do you want the epilogue?? good pay, they don´t need to force you they only needed to make you think you need it, and you do because i´m sure if you have an Xbox you DO have a gold membership right? did you believe that crap that MW2 was taking rid of the old servers system on the p.c. just because they were worried about all the cheats player do? but don´t believe it just wait a little bit, not too much maybe next week they´ll charge you for the real ending of a game, sounds impossible? yeah, i ´d have thought the same 8 years ago.....

Can you explain why you don't?

The 360's innovation was raising failure rates for electronics to all-time highs.

In fact, I think they may have set a record for repair costs... oh wiat, never mind. Microsoft already had that record set with Vista.

...yeah, but, see... the PS2 was actually successful. I didn't buy a Dreamcast, none of my friends did, so, PS2 gets the nod.

Plus, I don't think EVERYONE modded the Dreamcast. That's like saying everyone homebrews their PSP. While the majority may, there's still a set of folks that didn't. Not to mention, standard feature beats modded feature, all other things being equal.

Technically speaking, the PS2 came out in the year 2000, the END of the previous decade (90s). The Xbox 360 came out at the START of our CURRENT decade in 2001.

1991-2000 = 10 years

2001-2010 = 10 years

So technically speaking again, the PS2 doesn't belong on that list.

Not really Captain Planet because we can't say that the best part of the decade happens in 2010 because it hasn't happened yet. We then have to compare from 2000-2009 since the ps2 in that case would not be apart of the best of, for either decade. Since the year 2000 would be a year that doesn't count assuming 1990 - 1999.

I obviously meant the Xbox came out in 2001 and it doesn't change the fact that the PS2 did not come out this decade. That really is the basis of this article and my previous comment.

PS2 wasn't at all revolutionary, it was just an evolution of the PS1 hardware (faster processor, etc) and had the weakest hardware of last generation. It's virtue was that it had a large library of good games and Sony sold an awful lot of them. But I don't think there's anything particular about the PS2 that makes it stand-out, it was happened to be in the dominant market position. Nintendo had a weak console that generation, and Microsoft wasn't even in the picture yet for most of the cycle.

No, you're wrong.

it has introduce DVD use for games and doubles as a DVD player, online game which had been added later on, eyetoy which is used for a couple of motion-based games but didnt sell very well, it has started the music perihepal gaming. and from when it was released, the technology was very recieved by consumers. It is also the start point of many, many great videogames.

Also, the 360 is also just an improved version of the original Xbox, so its not at all revolutionary until microsoft unleashed loads of ideas that has turned the 360 into what it is now.

and there is no fanboyism here, it's just that i honestly think that the PS2 deserves the "console that helped define the decade" spot.

Pound for pound the 360 did waaaay more to advance consoles than ps2 did...all ps2 did was introduce dvd playing into the home. this isnt about game library but console advancement. and for the record xbox live came before ps2's lil add-on.
here a list of REAL xbox 360 achievements and 1st

1. standard wireless controller...(packed in with console from day 1)
2. Power on/off from controller....(yes remember walking up to press power)
3. DLC hate it or love still the 1st console to do it.
4. full media center......playing music/video from pc
5. play your music in ANY game ANY time.
6. 1st HD console on the market...Not a big deal but still a 1st
7. Netflix.....for those who have this was a HUGE 1st
8. game demo downloads/ no disc
9. xbox arcade...classic and small games DL they did it 1st
10. Movies Tv episodes DL/rent on a console...may not like it but still a 1st.

Thats all i can think of but....without making shit up you cant say ps2 did 10 things 1st.

there's nothing on this list that can be argued hands down 360 did them ALL 1st. and yea pc gaming did some these things but this isnt about pc's this is consoles only

I am not sure that the 360 helped "define the decade" but I will say this. The PSN would not exist as it is today without Xbox Live. Competition is a good thing, Sony and MS are pushing each other to innovate all the time, and I hope it stays that way.

While I never owned one myself, I would grant the PS2 helped revolutionize media in the living room. And it sold (sells) a bajillion units... no one is questioning that. It is hard to say the PS2 doesn't deserve a spot on the list, but don't overlook the things the 360 did to define the decade. Some of the biggest things you probably take for granted now on the PS3 or Wii are only available because of the Xbox 360. I will highlight three...

Console DLC (including title updates/bug fixes, expansions, demos, Arcade games, and 1000 songs for Rock Band)
Gamertags (the first time your persona was truly universal across all the games you played, the ability to follow friends)
Achievements (goes without explaining when you think of all the achievement whores)

Sure, they do push each other to innovate. I don't understand why your comment is getting upvoted though. You can use the Chicken or egg theory to infinite. (PSN because of LIVE, LIVE because of the Dreamcast online service, Dreamcast because of the PC internet gaming, the PC because of nerds, nerds because of studying and some form of social dysfunction, social dysfunction because of a weird smell emanating from said persons body, weird smell because of Apocrine glands, Apocrine glands because of evolution, evolution because of Earth's need to compete with existing planets, Earth's need to compete with existing planets because of deep-seeded insecurity caused by other planets with their cool species that are have "innovated" things like Xbox and LIVE over a million years ago, etc).

I disagree about the PS2. I feel like the PS2 was just a logical step forward and not revolutionary in the slightest. While the PS2 had some great games, I don't think it really changed anything. It stuck with the stratagy nintendo has kept from the nes to the gamecube, and that is simply to provide a more powerful machine. The xbox is revolutionary because while it improved graphics, it also brought together online integration, community, dlc, online game updates, and a whole list of other things that we take for granted now, but weren't common until the 360 launched.

Maybe you like the PS2 more than the xbox or you have fonder memories of it, which is fair enough. But I think the 360 really helped move the industry in a new direction, while the PS2 was great but nothing revolutionary. That said I honestly think the Wii deserves it because the popularity it gained due to its motion controls is just astounding, and it opened up a whole new market in the gaming industry.
