Though it's certainly not the sleekest handheld device we've ever seen -- in fact, it might be in the running for the unsleekest device ever created -- the latest project from a modder, nicknamed Techknott, boasts some pretty impressive capabilities. Basically, the handheld sends control signals to a PS3, which transmits video signals back to the device, allowing for nomadic sessions of Modern Warfare 2 (or any other PS3 game), as seen in the video after the jump.
According to the modder's post on BenHeck.com, the device will soon be available for purchase. It certainly looks neat, but we're not sure the clunky controls will help you set any Spec Ops world records. Seriously, this guy's time on The Pit is garbage.

What? That's probably just from his chair, or from his noisy camera, or some other ambient sound.

The PSP is already able to do this with LAIR. Sony just needs to make it a full feature and they would be golden.

but then again they need to do it for PSP2 when it has two analog nubs and four shoulder buttons.

The PSP can alwa play many PSN downloadable games this way but it's true without two nubs many PS3 games are unplayable. Also the lag you get from playing via networked video kinda limits the genre of playable games to things that dont require split second timing.

if you pair a dualshock on your pspgo, and then access remote play, all four shoulder buttons and both analogs register. there's even some dualshock control options when playing ps1 games right off the psp. I still wonder if the sixaxis will work for lair, though...

I was talking to my mates about something like this the other day, but I was thinking more along the lines of a USB LCD screen a bit like the keyboard that sticks in the top of the controller.
I would pay good money to be able to get a platinum trophy while taking a crap.

I have it for my PS2...seems he could have modified something like this to take the signal and leave you with a proper controller.

But what if, lets say, you want to play ON THE TOILET?!

not if they did it over the internet capabilities of both devices sort of like the onlive service.

I just played Pixeljunk Shooter on the toilet by Remoteplay. I swear all this bathroom talk must have force a bowel movement or something just to see if it were possible. It is either by wireless network or wireless connection to the PS3 directly but lag does play a factor if it's not video lag which can be fixed by turning down the visual settings then it's control lag where you press a button and dont fire for 2 seconds. But it was very playable, I'd have played Bionic commando but I was done.

I'm pretty sure there was at least a proof of concept with this on the PSP, tricking the PS3 into streaming actual games to it with a modified Remote Play PRX. I can't find it right now, but if I come across it whilst googling I'll be sure to note it here.

LAIR can do it without any hacking. I tried it and it ran really smooth, just impossible to control due to lack of buttons and sixaxis motion.

This is right up there with installing unix shell on your PS3.
i.e. completely useless
Even if this thing could broadcast over the internet so you can play your PS3 while on the shitter in some meth-ridden truck stop waiting for your whore to show up instead of your shitter at home it'd be horribly lagged out the ass.

I'd assume it's in there, but I don't see SIXAXIS integration mentioned anywhere.

I was thinking Nomad/TurboExpress, since it technically 'plays' full console games.

The device is in some serious need of an industrial design makeover...it looks like one of those hideous Tiger handhelds from the 80's.

Do many people think that he's just torn apart an old ps2 controller for the parts, the buttons look OLD and the joysticks are the real oldschool ones with rubber edges, thats pretty impressive that he's got it all working
How much does it cost him to make one i wonder? the screen is probable the most expensive component
hmmm

This system isn't actually running the PS3. It's basically a wireless PS3 controller with a video screen. The PS3 is sending the video feed to to the screen. It's a cool concept. It's similar to what Onlive is doing with Cloud gaming.
