Killzone 2 on your disappointing games list? WTF are you smoking, bro? And pretty much everyone who got it was more than pleased with it, including critics, so I don't know where you get that gamers were "underwhelmed" by it.

OMFG criticism of a PS3 exclusive on a professional gaming site!! This is unheard of. Quickly, call the SDF! Ask them them to take time off from ruining gametrailers.com to sort this heathen out!! *Insert rage*

Count me among the underwhelmed. Killzone 2's cookie-cutter level design, stupid, meathead characters and forgettable, often nonsensical script wrecked it for me. It was pretty, and it sounded great, but everything else about it was weak. Multiplayer was deep, at least, but didn't exactly reinvent the wheel. It was easily the most disappointing game I played this year.

While I haven't really commented in any of these 'best of the rest' bits, I have noticed this appears to be the most recurring theme. Someone disappointed with KZ2, someone upset at said disappointment. While I'm not a FPS guy, I'm sure KZ2 is a fine game. However, it seems to me that it is just one of those AAA games, really hyped, that was guaranteed good review scores before anybody truly played/reviewed it. So all the rebuttals I'm seeing saying 'look at the critics/reviews' sound a little hollow. Just an observation.

Jealous of you Joystiq staff for being able to even have a 'best of the rest' list, I don't have enough time on my hands as it is now to play that many games :P

I guess I should clarify in that I'm a bit of an odd duck when it comes to FPS games. I still think The Darkness stands above most any other FPS this gen, and my favorite FPS of last gen was the last Time Splitters that came out on GC.

The fanboyantagonizer.... yeah, like we're supposed to care of anything you have to say. GTFO here troll!

Anyways....

I agree, what's up with the Killzone 2 hating lately? Just because it's not made from the same mold as shooters by Activision or EA, it's all of a sudden a disappointment? It's a complete game, with an epic campaign, and a AAA multiplayer mode. Graphics, sound are top quality; and yes, even the controls after the last patch are balanced.

It's not perfect; in fact, i've had a number of problems with the game, but it's way better than MW2.

Whats wrong with being dissopointed at Killzone :/

I was dissopointed with a number of games, if I were to list them, would I be hammered for it, obviously I have my reasons. If you liked them, great for you, others opinions shouldnt effect you so much if you really liked a game.

I could play populous forever and not care what others thought about it :P

I was underwhelmed with Killzone 2 as well, but I totally got my 15 dollars worth with Battlefield 1943. I didn't like MW2 either, but really enjoyed the MAG beta. Here's to hoping 2010 is another great gaming year.

It depends. If it's a game the hive mind likes then yes you will, like they did to me when I say I didn't like Uncharted 2 that much. My goty list (which I only posted because someone asked) was even voted down because it didn't have Uncharted 2 in it.

I thought / think that Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2 & Borderlands were all basically shit so I'm sure some of you guys would rail on me for that if I were a blogger as well. KZ2 was far from underwhelming and those of us who realize that can be happy and those who don't can kill themselves! Easy.

I dunno about K2 - never played it, as I have a 360. It does look like it has sick visuals though. I definitely agree with you though Markez. I think The Darkness is one of the most underrated games this gen. It's single player was freakin good. The multiplayer was brutal though. I'm pumped for the sequel. Hopefully a release date gets announced soon.

Well, I wouldn't be suprised, I didn't much like ODST, I'm guessing 100 fanboys would storm me telling me why I'm such and such and how it is great, like that makes a difference, suddenly I should wake up tommorow morning liking it just because a few people TOLD me to like it.

Is he supposed to NOT have a list of dissopointments for fear that the readers may not like that?

Yaknow, speaking of 'The Darkness', I actually loved that game, I just felt that a few things needed to be fixed to make it more realistic and also thought the AI was a bit stupid.

Other then that, I'd gladly accept a Darkness 2 into my home.

One thing about Killzone 2 that I thought was hilarious was that Helghan is supposedly this harsh, inhospitable planet. It's so nasty that even the dudes who are from there wear gas masks all the time. But Sev and Rico and their buddies run around for the entire game without so much as a bandana over their mouths. If the Helghast don't kill them, surely the orange lung would, amirite?

I don't begrudge anyone for liking the game, though. It obviously has its appeal. Just not my cup of tea.

I think the writer's disappointment would be more understood if he actually would have listed why he was disappointed. The only thing I can surmise that he's disappointed about is the graphics (that was why everyone was hyping the game if I'm not correct), and I think the graphics were great.

Still, I was disappointed with KZ 2 because the story was boring imo. Everything was great except the story. Nothing exciting happened at all. The most surprising thing of the game was the final level. Other than that, the single-player game seemed to drag on.

Besides that issue I have with the game, I still think it's fun to play. I see why it may disappoint some though.

I'm pretty sure you're referring to TimeSplitters: Future Perfect which is my favorite game of all time. Funny story, Unique maps and characters...and weapons...and game modes. Plus the best mapmaker I've ever seen. Forge is good for certain things but making maps in Future Perfect was accesible to everyone and could produce maps that led to hilarious and fun games.

Timesplitters 4...now!

I find a lot of the main characters from shooters annoying these days, from Haze's stupid ranting idiots, Killzone's meatheads to more meatheads in Gears and Masterchief either saying something cheezy or nothing at all.

I miss just playing as a Gingerbread man, give me Timesplitters over any of these games any day :P

yeah, it's amazing how many people suddenly think it was crap just because a few bitched about the controls not being like COD.. nevermind the 9s and 10s across the board in the reviews, not one mentioned any issues with the controls. obviously they all got it that it wasn't a twitch shooter and didn't try to play it as one.

The problem with Killzone 2 was that really nothing exciting happened. All the game's thrills came from, well, shooting. It also gave me a killer headache because of all the motion blur and headbobbing crap, seriously why didn't they give us an option to turn that shit off.

Killzone 2 was a massive disappointment for me as well. Largely due to how damn dark it was. Takes almost all the enjoyment out of a game when it was as black and brown as Killzone was. First Gears of War was that way with me too.

Dirk Dorkelson sums it up. The only way you could be blown away by KZ2 is if you haven't played any FPS on any other console (or PC) in the past 5-7 years. I found the firefights to be repetitive and boring, the graphics were good but there was too much grey and brown and the story. Oh god, the story. Gears of War had a shitty, over the top, macho "bad ass" story, but it was at least so bad it was good. Playing through it on co-op with a friend of mine was great because of how much we could make fun of it. KZ2 felt like that, but without the "fun". Like it was so bad I just cringed any time a character spoke or the story progressed. All the swearing and "EXTREME!"ness, it's like what a 14 year old thinks "mature" storytelling is.

I don't know, it wasn't a BAD game, but it was awfully pedestrian. I would have been pissed if I'd paid $60 for it, but I'm not too mad since it came with my PS3. And to anyone that says "the same complaints can be made about MW2", you're absolutely right. That's why I sold the copy that came with my 250GB Elite to make up some of the purchase cost. Watching a friend play "No Russian" earlier tonight, I feel good about my choice.

First off, Lithgow...please don't use "bro" in a sentence. Ever.

Second, I bought KZ2 at release, and was disappointed as well. Was the sound design awesome? You bet. How about the graphics? Absolutely stunning. It really just comes down to a matter of preference, wherein I prefer something with a memorable cast I feel a connection with. Uncharted 2 was definitely that game for me, as was L4D2 and Arkham Asylum. If someone doesn't agree with your opinion, it doesn't make them wrong...it just means they have different tastes/preferences.

I'm not saying it's the worst game ever, it just didn't live up to the the (glorious, sexy, incredible-looking) hype for me. In the end, that proved to be my biggest letdown.

Ravnos does a nice job summing up the differences between Gears of War and Killzone. Gears was over the top and ridiculous while KZ2 seemed to play is straight up. When I play the Gears games, I feel as if the roided out characters are being portrayed with a knowing wink from Cliffy B. and company. (That ridiculous "rap" during the credits of the first game reinforces this.) My friends and I still constantly blurt out a Marcus Fenix-style "niice" when we play other games.

In KZ2, though, the characters were presented without that wink from the developers, leading to a feeling that the game took itself waaay too seriously. The couple attempts at humor I remember just fell absolutely flat, as if they were jokes written to appeal to the ridiculous, unlikable characters themselves rather than the folks playing them.

That bolt gun was cool, though. Easily my favorite weapon of the year.

Some of the titles that are allowed to go into production are ones that only Bobby Kotick himself, could've approved...

But you know, by putting board games into the list, Chris is going to use that as an excuse to put old games in like last year, right?

Ya and I didn't say he should be hanged for it, I'm just questioning his decision. There are a lot of other hyped titles that not only failed with the fanbase, but with critics as well. He acted like KZ2 was hated by a general consensus, which is not the case in any reality.
