Well...IF I had the money, there are a few virtual buildings I would consider. Namely, the Galactic Senate, the Jedi Temple, and 500 Republica in TOR.

Be a better 'investment' than in some unheardof MMO.

This is why only smart people should have money. Yeah, he *could* get back the money with that whole tax/rent thing, but he likely won't make a profit or much of one at least. There's much safer and smarter things to invest that much money in, even with the shaky economy.

Calling it an investment is probably just him rationalizing his addiction. Sure he may get some back but monetary return couldn't possibly be his main goal here.

Yeah I don't think he plans on getting this much money back, at least I hope not. If it was WoW, with their 11+ million base then yeah I could understand. I remember from when I played WoW all the time, gold farming and gold selling was a very profitable business. All it required was dedication and patience on the player's part, and they could sell the gold they farmed for real money.

You did have to compete with the chinese and their farmbots though...

Not all investments have to yield a return. That thirst for profit is one of the reasons our country is the way it is now. He has all the right to spend his money how he pleases for self pleasure. That money will go on to do better things for the company that runs that MMO

I know, I have never liked the idea of paying for a game you already paid for, and have never done a p2p mmo because of it (and f2ps are shitty and full of 9-13 year olds). But this guy put more money than I have into that thing. Granted I have spent a couple thousand on gaming in my lifetime, from consoles to games, but shit thats a lot of money.

I knew of it when it was Project Entropia back in the day (spent a little time in the open beta) and about their currency exchange system, but I had no idea anyone was still playing that game, much less throwing away assloads of cash for a low-poly count space bazaar. Although the website claims Planet Calypso is being upgraded to the CryEngine 2, so maybe not so low-poly for very long...

The wikipedia article on Entropia is kind of interesting, they claim to have set the world record for most expensive sale of a virtual item in both 2004 and 2008 (26k and 100k), and the purchasers claim to have recouped their investments in under a year... which I would call shenanigans on, if I hadn't seen the sort of prices WoW characters can go for. As it is wikipedia though, grain of salt, etc.

Ummm, statistics may be skewed/inaccurate in this case because in Entropia ALL MONEY has real-life value and while I could buy a 1000 PED's for $10, I could also trade the 1000 PED I earned in game into $10. Once you get used to the fact that EVERYTHING you do in that game carries economic value, it starts looking a whole lot different.

Assuming that Erik is a hardcore player because let's face it, he bought a fucking virtual space station for a third of a million, he probably owns a whole lot of various shops/locations,etc. in-game and gets a big profit cut from a lot these. While he possibly did pay for some of the space station out of his own pocket, we can safely assume that the far majority of the PED paid was PED he earned in-game through said profits, etc. as opposed to him simply waking up one day and clearing $330,000 off his bank account at a whim - an impression a lot of you here seem to be giving away.

For the record, I still think he's an idiot who should've simply taken the money out and enjoyed the luxury of Vegas brothels for over a good sextastic year, but there is a crucial difference between specifically buying a space station and paying real-life money and buying it using the in-game currency(that happens to have real-life value) he earned.

Sure, maybe he didn't take $330k out of the bank to buy this, but if he had that much in-game credit he could have pulled it out to put $330k INTO his bank account. The fact remains the same: this player spent $330,000 on this.

I would assume if a guy blows 330k on something like this it must mean that 330k is little more than chump change to him. That's really the only rationalization I can fathom.

But if he's managed to earn that much ingame then he might just have the business skills to make this investment profitable. If there's still a paying userbase for him to exploit, then it's not within his interests to cash out and run whilst there's plenty more easy money to be made.

Jakka thank you for clearing that up. And he probably didn't put it into his bank account because he is either so addicted that he doesn't care about real life and only cares about the game, or he's extremely good and hardcore and plans on making a HUGE return on those PEDs. either way, I still think it's stupid...although real life profit from a video game...I may have to check this out

you are correct, buzz is a harcore player. thoes guys above, no buzz is not the stupid lawsuit happy kid.
however buzz is not the normal hardcore player, when one says hardcore they usualy mean the fighting type, which i have seen him hunts mobs, but thats not his main profession, his main profession is crafting.

he is one of the top crafters in the game capable of crafting most things in the game, i belive he is also the top furniture crafter as well. and he owns tons of apartments, homes, and shops.

Me too. Only I lose it when I see folks like yourself that spew out a comment like yours after reading a couple sentences of a blog article that doesn't explain the situation at all.

As has been mentioned several times, this wasn't a case of him making a 330k withdrawal from his bank account to buy this. It was most likely all "fake" money that he earned in-game, no different than you spending "fake" currency in any game you've ever played where you had the option to sell your in-game assets for real life money.

If you had read the second sentence of the second paragraph, it states the virtual money was purchased with real money. Which if true (I'm assuming so), my statement stands. But if he had actually accrued that much through online play, then I retract it.
