I was positive this was another EVE Online story. Apparently, there's room on this rock for more than one weird-ass MMO.

For a moment, I thought this was a story from 2005. They love to announce every time someone buys huge real estate in that game, and I'm pretty sure there was some kind of space station (*checks* or asteroid...) already.

But hey, just like the last guy, he probably paid for it with in-game profits, and is going to recoup his money in a year or so.

And then spend it on more virtual goodies.

This guy spent money on his hobby and has a chance to recoup it and make a profit. I don't see what the big deal is, it happens everyday. I don't see how it's pathetic or dumb.

Also, lets not get all high and mighty about ourselves by saying that the money should go to charity. Who are you to tell anybody how their money should be spent.

This is something I would need far more information on what this player did before making this purchase. For all we know, he could have capitalized the market of this game, and buying this station was simply furthering the fact. I think a lot of the commenters here are just looking at that 330k number and not thinking about HOW the player came to that conclusion. There are very few people who would willingly blow that much on something like this without any forethought. There are even fewer who would actually have that much money.

At first blush this does seem rather insane, but then consider how much people spend on trading cards, stamps, coins, and other such stuff that only has value because other people are insane enough to want it too. There are more than a few hobbies where otherwise worthless items have top-end prices that exceed 330K and then some, and in most of those cases the chances of actually recouping that money is next to none.

In other words, aside from the novelty -- and really it isn't even that novel anymore -- there's really nothing to see here.

This still doesn't make me want to play MMOs.

I suspect he'll get buyer remorse when they copy and paste another station next door then another and another. Soon there will be a virtual walmart/skymall next door then he'll wish he was somewhere else.

Actually, this man has a gorgeous fiancee and has done well financially with other endeavors within this MMO.
All of the last five bidders on this particlular virtual item HAD done extensive research into projected returns Vs risk.
Personally, I still think the price was a little high.
But, there are several individuals earning a significant full time 'wage' from 'investments' based in this particular MMO (Yes, I have seen their books).

Mad? In my opinion, no. Risky? Of course.
But no more so than any other high risk investments that millions of people around the world throw milliions of dollars on every day.
At least this particular 'investment' has some solid stats on which to base a reasonable profit potential/investment return on.
The gaming industry is (and has been for some years now) booming.
Investing in such an industry is ALWAYS risky, but with higher risk, comes higher potential return.

Personally, I would suggest not writing it off until you know the facts and the current turnover of this particular 'relatively unknown' virtual universe.
You may be surprised ;)

I will only spend real life money in an artificial world, when that world is 'The Matrix'. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be around to witness the power of the CryEngine v146.5 though.

I wonder how much the blonde in the red dress would go for?

ok as i states earlier buzz is one of the games top crafters, and he is the top furniture crafter i believe as well.
buzz owns 3 stores in 3 of the 4, 3 storie malls in game. all of which a directly above the next in each mall.

so yes buzz makes a fair bit of change from the items he sells. weather he is rich in real life i do not know.

as for the guy who bought club never die, he owns his own record lahbel and ive seen photos of him hanging out with some big names in the music industry. his passed away wife also has a statue on memorial island in game, and there is even a song about her.

deathifier owns TI and i don't know if hes rich or not irl.

as for if you think this game is dead, there are tons of people who play this game still. some of my society mates deposit several thousand a month into pc, and some of them ive seen blow away $500 per hunting trip they go on.

Neverdie, the guy that paid 100k dollars for the other asteroid a few yeasr back, became a freaking millionare because of his investment in entropia universe. After 6 months he got back those 100k and he has been profiting since then.

Buzz is probably going to take a year or so to get back his investment but after that he will get rich. stop talking about things you don't know nothing about.

you will probably never see this message, but i don't care.

you are wrong CND is not the OTHER asteroid it is the ONLY asteroid. crystal palace is a orbital space station around the planet, there is no were to mine on crystal palace so that cuts the profits he could make by 1/3rd, i believe there are no player shops on cp as well, so that cuts his profit even more meaning he has only 1/3 of the profit chance die has, so unless they are going to remodel cp. buzz will need allot of luck to profit back in 6 months.

and as i stated unless MA plans to upgrade cp with apartments and mining and shops, I see this place for being worth no more then 600k ped ala $60k.

Its amusing to see so many of u totally bagging something u know absolutely nothing about, my guess is the majority of u are all those snotty nose lil WoW playing shits that we dont have to deal with anywhere near as much of on Calypso. Most players are older and alot more mature, and being adults we are responsible for our own actions.

Money can and does get made within this virtual realm every day just as in the real world...

How much is the monthly subscription for this mmo? Zero!
Granted, depositing money makes the long road alot shorter but it isnt essential...
