I love Justin but he has steered me wrong a lot this year. For example: I really didn't need to play Call of Juarez or 50 Cent. But here's where it balances out: Time Gentlemen Please was awesome! JUSTIN I DON'T KNOW WHEN TO TRUST YOU

I just bought Ben There, Dan That/Time Gentleman bundle on Steam since it was on sale and you had recommended it so.

Also, your list is the most unorthodox one on here, and I like it. I'm effing sick of hearing about MW2 and AC2 and the like: we all know they're the best, so how about giving out 4-10th place trophies as well as 1-3?

I find it funny that all the Killzone 2 hate on these lists just makes me want to play it again. Loved that game in a lot of ways; not in every way, but in enough to actually bother playing it even though I don't randomly play FPSs.

Also loved that the wife lost a bet and all she wanted was a spot on your list.

killzone 2 on the disappointment list while 50 cent:BOTS on the top 10? this may be enough to shatter joystiqs review credentials for me forever.. and for those who say Killzone 2 didn't do anything new, how many FPS have you played with a first person cover system? not to mention this game is infinitely more tactical than every other shooter its been compared to, with much better atmosphere and AI to boot.. its amazing how fashionable it's become to hate K2 again.. it was hyped with a CG video, people bashed it, it came out, people praised it and critics heaped tons of great reviews on across the board claiming in many cases that the game had met or exceeded the CG trailer... now almost a year later and most of Joystiqs editors seem to think that it was a bomb.. its like bizarro world

i wasn't aware that Rainbow 6 Vegas had a FIRST PERSON cover system. in fact i played them both a ton and i'm quite sure they don't.. and yes, they're a bit more tactical in some regards(they're SQUAD SHOOTERS they're supposed to be) although the enemy AI isn't better than K2 in either one..

as i said, it's a SQUAD shooter.. of course the squad AI is a little better.. but that aside, if you notice i specifically said FIRST PERSON cover system in my first post.. no other FPS has done that that i'm aware of..

oh rly? as opposed to going to a 3rd person view when you're in cover? yeah, that's realism..

Don't act like a martyr for a poor abused little kid of a game. The CG trailer was a flat out lie, they claimed for years it was gameplay, so the "fashionable hatred" was pretty god damn well deserved. There was absolutely tactical about it, even on the hardest difficulty it was the same hide behind cover for awhile then charge in guns blazing, and as for the AI, they spent most of the game waiting at the next checkpoint telling you to get over there while the enemies stayed in the same spot. Just to shatter your bubble too, Call of Juarez also had a first person cover system

sounds like you haven't even touched the game to me... everyone including Justin in his own review touted how tactical the game is.. that's not even debatable really.. and that 2005 trailer was known to be a target render since it came out.... Guerilla themselves even said that at the time..

you and i know that's a flat out lie clown. If they admitted from day one it was a cg trailer, is that why Jack Tretton said that it "is real gameplay everybody's seeing out there" on the same day the trailer was revealed? Or why Phil Harrison said "running off video done to PS3 spec"? Apparently you don't know what the word debatable means either, just because you and Mcelroy said it was really tactical doesn't mean a fucking thing. What was tactical about it huh? Could you issue flanking commands to your squad? Hell, could you flank anything on your own without getting killed in seconds?

"The Joystiq staff: For serious, guys? Nobody else voted for 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand? Like, did you even play it?"

Tha't's kind of like what I've been thinking, only replace "50 Cent..." with "Demon's Souls," "else" with "at all" (no, an honorable mention and disapointment in the same list doesn't count), and "play it" with "try to clear the first stage."

That's what I thought! That disappointment/honorable mention about Demon's Souls was complete bull! Almost like Justin saying KZ2 was a disappointment yet his own review said otherwise. Just confusing. Don't have a review or opinion at all when your giving mixed messages to your reader...

hahahahahahahahaha.... Justin actually was the one who reviewed K2 from this site..

taken from his own review:
"But, as I would discover in the following hours, what it lacks in bionic arms and guns that shoot portals, Killzone 2 makes up for with expertly refined shooting action that's likely to shame most of the genre's titles you'll put in your console this year."

"Once you master the game's distinct, well-balanced weapons, you feel a real sense that any situation can be conquered if only you can find the right strategy. After I got the hang of the combat and realized I would have to bring brains as well as reflexes to each scenario, I couldn't wait to see the next way in which the game would test them both."

"Between great mechanics and being a visual treat, Killzone 2 should be easy to recommend -- and it is, to those who are willing to put the time in to discover all its charms."

sounds like a real disappointment.. :| :| consistency is always nice.. especially from the same reviewer..

From the same review:

"if you're looking for something outside of aesthetics that quickly sets it apart from the bevy of other first-person shooters on the market, you're not going to find it"

"Guerilla Games seems as if it's constantly making the most generic choice possible, and honestly, it was enough to put me off at first."

"But a little bit of a hook or a gimmick would have been nice, even if it was something as simple as building a remotely compelling narrative. Half the time I wasn't even positive of where I was or what I was doing there."

Seems like the positives still outweigh the negatives in his review. No where did he say he was disappointed. It seems like this is a case of giving a positive review to please the masses and when the dust clears he can finally speak his mind. I hope it isn't tho and is just his taste changing over time.

that's why context is ever so important.. your first 2 quotes that you listed were in the first paragraph and pretty much nullified by the next paragraph... i didn't selectively pick quotes to skew the review, i picked the ones that best summarized the overall tone of the review.. this is the first part of the review with CONTEXT.. none of it implies disappointment. the rest of the review follows suit.

"Killzone 2 doesn't come with a gimmick. It couldn't be easier on the eyes, but if you're looking for something outside of aesthetics that quickly sets it apart from the bevy of other first-person shooters on the market, you're not going to find it.

In its first few hours, in terms of weapons, enemies and narrative, Killzone 2 designer Guerilla Games seems as if it's constantly making the most generic choice possible, and honestly, it was enough to put me off at first. Nearly every Helghast is the same perambulating black blob with red eyes and every weapon feels like something you've played with before.

But, as I would discover in the following hours, what it lacks in bionic arms and guns that shoot portals, Killzone 2 makes up for with expertly refined shooting action that's likely to shame most of the genre's titles you'll put in your console this year."

sounds pretty positive to me.. i'd expect a lot based on this review.

At no point did I imply, nor did the reviewer, that the negatives outweighed the positives. Neither did he say it was a bad game. In his 'dissapointment' list he said that after all the hype and hope it was a let down - relative to all the hype.

People just jumped on the review like he didn't say a bad thing about it yet he did. He liked it overall obviously but for a major release of an exclusive it wasn't the genre defining shooter he was hoping for.

Is that so hard to understand?

I had a blast playing Godfather II and 50 Cent. Neither were games of the year material, but I think were too harshly criticized.

What's with the ridiculous Killzone 2 defense force? If you enjoyed the game who cares if others didn't, and stop defending a 1st-person cover system. It's really nothing to brag about.

Good list, btw. Always wanted to try 50 Cent 2 out, just never got the chance to.

Call of Juarez was really good. My only regret is not having spent enough time online with it (many lag problems from the first week of release, which pretty much killed any chances for much of an online community).
