If the world of popular music has taught us anything, it is that "love" is totally and completely broken. It's chock-full of exploits, it's got irrevocable balancing issues, and according to Bad English, it's simply too expensive. Fortunately, the game called Love will hopefully prevent these issues from cropping up when it enters its beta testing phase on January 7. Until that time, only registrants in the pay-to-play Alpha test can log on.
We've contacted the game's creator to find out if the beta will require some sort of registration and selection, or whether if it will be completely open to the public. If it's the latter, we suggest checking it out -- it's a lovely, bizarre little game.

So, if I make it into the beta can I officially say that I'm in Love?

If I'm playing Love that means I'm in Love.
If I'm developing Love that means I'm making Love.
What if I'm a publisher and I'm selling Love? Does that make me a pimp?

Has anyone played the Alpha yet? Is it something to recommend to someone who is for a single player experience? (I do love MMOs, if it means I can do quests by myself)

Love isn't an mmo in the traditional sense...there's no quests or character progression that you'd normally expect from an mmo. Instead, the game revolves around joining tribes of other players and building settlements, all the while fighting for land with enemy npc tribes. The early alpha version that I played showed a lot of potential, and I would happily play the beta and then the full release.

If you watch the internet show CO-OP, they had a segment about the beta some time ago, I think it was season 1 episode 6. It should give you a really good explanation about the game.

It really didn't feel ready. It's beautiful but almost too ambitious. We would all log on, get our town built up with about 30 of us on at any given time, but then we would log out and the npcs would destroy everything while we were offline. Not to mention, most people just completely fucked up the layout of the towns and would make random almost bottomless pits and tunnels to nowhere and but objects and tools in the absolute worst places. It was gorgeous, but a mess.

Beta testing used to be a job people would get paid for. Now gamers think WOW I GET TO PLAY THE GAME EARLY? FOR ONLY A SMALL FEE?
No thanks. A free beta gets your beta testing out to a larger audience and if it's not completely riddled with bugs provides as advertising as well, a paid beta is like slapping your potential customers in the face.

And yet a paid beta means that the developer can sleep under a roof and eat food, considering he has no budget or investors. Can't imagine why he'd go that route.
He's said many times about the alpha that he could easily test with 100 people, but so many wanted to try the game, he decided to set up a system so the users can pay for (most of) the servers running the game for test.

Agreed. A beta is supposed to bring people in so that the developers can get feedback right? And if they're after serious beta users and not those that just exploit it and don't give any feedback at all, why not kick those that aren't serious?
One constructive comment of criticism would be enough. If the beta users get paid a small amount for giving constructive feedback it would be even better. Rather than having your customers pay for a product that isn't finished

Ignore my last comment, I just remembered that it was a single developer. xD

Well, if it's anything like my experiences, Love will cost 100 dollars and come with a side-dish of Regret, dood.

CaramelZappa, this game is being developed by a single person. He has to front the bill for everything involving his game, and you're calling him out for trying to get some of his invested money back?

He should get the invested money back by making a great game that people will buy. Getting people to pay for an unfinished product seems greedy to me whether it's one person or a huge corporation.

Don't you know how to read? How the hell can one guy get the invested money back by making a great game if he can't even test the damn game? He's not greedy ffs and if you don't like the way he's setting up his game, then don't freaking try it or buy it.

I completely understand if people don't want to pay for the Beta, My advice for anyone who is unsure, is just to wait for the final release.
To the people who think I am greedy, I can only tell you this, I have been working on this game for 3 years without funding, or publisher and all I'm asking is that you contribute to the server costs (bandwidth and hardware). I make no profit what so ever. If i didn't ask for 3 euros, I wouldn't be able to let more then 500 players in So there wouldn't be an open beta at all.
Another thing that the payed beta lets me do is test the payment system. That HAS to work, if you think the beta is bad deal, imagine paying for the final game and not getting access because the payment system is broken.
I hope to see many of you in the Beta, and let me know what you think of it.

Hey man, never mind what all these people say. You're not greedy, you're just doing this so that more people can enjoy and help you in the making of your game. I still haven't played it but from the video I watched in your website, Love seemed really cool and fun (and a little complicated too, which I guess is always true...).
I wish you the best of luck!

Makes sense as an independent dev, you either ask for donations or charge for admission, and this is the easier way to filter out useless beta monkeys who sign up expecting a fully finished title. While I'm not terribly interested in Love, I am supportive of the "garage" developer doing their own thing, so more power to you.

Don't take my comments personally, they are misplaced. In a world where every beta seems to be for paying fileplanet members only or only for people who pre-order games any mention of a paid beta sets me off. The industry as a whole is getting greedier and greedier with things like paid betas, launch DLC, and subscription services like xbox live. The whole thing has left me a bit jaded.
I realize you're game is a solo effort and you're trying to fund the testing the best way that you can, and I wish you the best of luck.

I registered just to tell you to keep it up. Gaming needs more original games like this! Excited about getting some Lovin. I wasn't able to get the alpha to work on Windows 7 though :(

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you
in time - It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
