Last week, our MMO-obsessed sister site Massively took a break from their sneak preview of Cryptic's spacefaring sim, Star Trek Online, to share some of their thoughts on the Klingon faction and player vs. player combat. Today, they've got a preview of the first few levels you'll be grinding through. Is there anything more exciting in an MMORPG than those inaugural hours? All those tutorials? The terrible items? The countless woodland rodents and birds you have to slaughter to become marginally less pathetic?
Check out Massively's preview to find out how your astronautical career begins. Spoiler alert: You start the game by fighting the Borg, which are way more intimidating than rabid sewer rats.

Yes. But they aren't in the closed beta. I think they're pre-order bonus.
I hope cryptic don't hurt me.

Some of my best memories of an MMORPG are in those first few hours (who're we kidding- first few months) where you haven't a clue what is happening or where you are, and you just wander in to things, not knowing what they are or how to get out alive.
Many times in my first few levels of Runescape (only MMO I dedicated a lot of time to - forgive me but WoW was above my computer specs, and above my dial-up connection) I just wandered in to death, not knowing what was happening or where I was, and then just going back and using the slowest method in the game to get back my items which I thought were worth a lot, and were actually completely worthless when compared to later items. The later levels where you know how to work the game never give you moments where you have no clue what to do, and it is those moments you have no clue that make MMOs most realistic, as let's face it, that's how most of are most of the time in reality.

You're telling me Miranda-class ships survived the Dominion war, and are still puttering around space 60 years after they were supposed to be decommissioned? Nova-class science vessels I could see, but Miranda class? My geek bullshit-o-meter is peaking out.

Excelsior class ships were around in the TNG era...

I suspect one of a few this is going on here:
1) The author is mistaken and it is not a Miranda class, but something with a similar configuration. The Miranda is not listed as one of the ships features in ST:O as per: http://www.startrekonline.com/ships-index
2) If it is indeed a Miranda, it is perhaps a placeholder model, in lieu of one of the newer ships they haven't completed yet.
3) It is a refit using the same (classic) name, but is actually a new ship. Note above refits of the constitution, galaxy, sovereign, and even the relatively new defiant class got a refit.
4) It really is a Miranda and is a huge lorefail.

Well, the Mirandas did show up in a few TNG episodes, as I recall.
This is an MMO, so you're starting at "low level." I suspect they wanted to pick a ship design that would be recognizable to Trek fans, yet would still be the Starfleet equivalent of a 1st level Paladin. So the Miranda's a good choice from that perspective.
In fact, naming your new ship the "U.S.S. First Level Paladin" would be pretty appropriate.

They get away with it the same way they get away with having a Constitution-class in the game. It's a modern ship, but "designed to look like a classic ship".
That's their explanation for Constitution-classes.

For some on the Internet, idiocy is its own reward.
It's the only explanation that makes sense to me.
