Modern Warfare 2 leads UK game sales for 8th straight week

Following another week of tepid new releases (er, were there any releases at all?), and despite a 41-percent drop in sales, Modern Warfare 2 remained atop the UK all-formats sales chart for the week ending January 2. This marked the eighth straight week that Modern Warfare 2 led UK game sales, a feat unequaled since the gritty street sequel, Need for Speed: Underground 2, captured the British imagination five years ago. This week, Bayonetta gets her first shot at taking down the reigning champ.

Additionally, Assassin's Creed II continued its rebound up the week's towering sales list, perched at the number two position, followed by a trio of casual Wii games. FIFA 10 dropped four spots into sixth place as weekly sales of the ~~soccer sim~~ "footie fax" fell 61 percent. Finally, UbiGaga's Just Dance made a fevered surge up to seventh on the chart, with New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart and Avatar rounding out the top ten. Can we get a "TAROK MAKTO!"?

That is so weird. It's almost like Modern Warfare 2 isn't the colossal failure of a game that the commenters here claim to be.

It's like people actually bought the game, and enjoyed it, and recommended it to their friends.

I don't remember anyone saying it was a colossal failure.

I bought the game and enjoyed it. But wouldn't recommend it to anyone past saying "Its like Call of Dury 4, but With slightly more stuff.."

And I'd be sure to follow that up with "just wait for Bad Company 2, it's going to be much better."

then I'd go back to playing Borderlands.

I call this bashing of MW2 the "GTA 4 Effect."

Well, Yoon's comments were strong, but deserved.

Let's not kid ourselves here, both sides. We all know people bought MW2 for the multiplayer which, hatred of IW and single player or not, is almost undeniably great with the possible exception of the community. The campaign could be absolute shit, and it probably would barely make a difference in sales at all

Review: MW2:

"Though we can't comment on the plastic night vision goggles or the other bonuses you'll get in the Hardened and Prestige editions, the actual disc containing the game is well worth every cent you'll shell out for it."

What an idiotic thing to say teh troll. Guess what? Uncharted is a shooter, why is it stupid to expect other games to have a story as good as that? It's certainly possible, Maybe if people actually gave a shit instead of being so willfully compliant, shooters would have good stories that are actually comprehensible

Teh Troll, CoD4 had a great story, 5 had a pretty good story...why should we give IW a pass for screwing up MW2's story?

I think that Modern Warfare 2 had an okay if vague story that allowed for a lot of extremely varied environments and a ton of "oh-shit!" moments. It's no Uncharted 2, but i would attribute that more to Nathan Drake's character development and dialogue than it's actual story of magic tree sap and psychotic mountain men with a penchant for dress-up.

I thought BF:BC2 beta was boring as hell.

Why is it so hard to tell a great story in a FPS? I mean, Bioshock has done it.

My thing is this; from the outside, it looks lazy. Like IW accepted that their game is a FPS, and they just focused on the multiplayer or trimmed the story to where it was unrecognizable.

Well, I think most of us are looking for the something that pushes the genre much further than the status quo. (Hell, I hate the genre but I could stand FPS's if they told great stories.)

The two games you listed are arguably two of the best games... ever. Imagine a FPS with that amount of thought detailed into it.

Why did this dumbass get voted up? I've been one of the extremely few supporters of MW2 here.

In my opinion, MW2 went the way that many of us old-timers are afraid ALL games are going to go in the not-so-distant future: focus on the multiplayer component, and throw in the campaign mode as an afterthought only. Sure, the online experience is amazing, but guess what...I've never played it and have no intention to. So for me, who is really only interested in the campaign mode...MW2 was a letdown. Sorry, but it was...

ahh, that's right. am i the only one that thinks avatar was overrated? the story was way too cliched. it's 3D was incredible though, i'll definitely admit that.

You're dumb. Just the fact that you are able to blow apart cover (including houses) just like in real life makes BC infinetly better then any other war shooter to come before it.

Killzone's story, while flat, makes sense. MW2 is just "BOOM EXPLOSIONS DEATH EXPLOSIONS BAYVISION!"

@ Demoman: I'm making an observation.

We can play whatever we want for whatever reasons we want. At least we think about these things enough to make seemingly good decisions.

But the mass (who buy games like Mass Effect and then say "WTF is this shit?! Fuck that I'm selling this shit when the next CoD comes out) plays whatever based on nothing but big money machismo marketing and a misplaced sense of brand loyalty.

So when we read numbers and wonder where all this support comes for a game that may or may not exceed expectations, (Look at ANY Madden's sale numbers), this may be where it comes from. The mass will buy en masse whatever they have been *successfully* marketed into buying...whether that product is actually good is 50/50.

These Battlefield fanboys just popped out of nowhere. They didn't like MW2 because it was getting popular, and so they tried to find an inferior competitor to cheer on. Oh, look, a post on Joystiq about Bad Company 2, I'll automatically say that game is better even though I didn't even play it (before the beta came out).

Umm... Battlefield isn't the first game to be able to do that.

You know, Demoman...Battlefield's kinda been around a while...

I really enjoyed KZ2s story even though it was mostly "YO, IM BLACK! YOU GOT A FUNNY MOHAWK! GET DOHS SPACE NAZIS! AH SHIT SPACE HITLER SUNK MAH BATTLESHIP"

I'm talking about console Battlefield fanboys on this site more specifically. Bad Company fanboys to be even more specific.
