A few weeks ago, the fruits of four years of labor finally paid off for independent film studio BMB Finishes when its Zelda-based movie, The Hero of Time, was released for public consumption over the internets. Reaction to the film was mixed, but it seemed like everyone appreciated the 1,460 days of hard work that went into the feature-length film's creation. Apparently, that's not the case -- the movie's official site was updated on New Years Day, explaining that the studio had come to an agreement with Nintendo to stop distributing the film online.
The update sounds less miffed than you might imagine, stating, "we understand Nintendo's right to protect its characters and trademarks and understand how in order to keep their property unspoiled by fan's interpretation of the franchise, Nintendo needs to protect itself - even from fan-works with good intentions." The missive jokingly ends by saying, "I'm sure our next project will be right around the corner! No, it's not Majora's Mask." Yeah, that would be ridiculous. Twilight Princess, on the other hand, seems like a logical choice.

I can't believe a man like Gillian would do that.
That is Gillian in your avatar, right?

It is, and I'm just sayin. The internet is holding its own well enough that maybe Nintendo should have found something better to throw its legal weight at.
But then again, this is the company that sent a C&D to SuicideGirls because a guy mentioned that he liked Metroid in his profile on the site.

Well, if you wanna make Nintendo's life easier, list them here.
I personally wouldn't want anyone doing some crappy Zelda movie if it was my idea. It's a nice gesture, but it's not like Nintendo told them they could make the movie.
It's like all those people making those Obama shirts and jackets in NYC. It's flattering, but not really quality stuff, and not canon at all.

Nobody told Rooster Teeth they could use Halo to make Red vs. Blue either, but Microsoft wound up working with them on it. The reality is that this movie wouldn't have taken a dime out of Nintendo's pocket, whether it's brilliant or terrible, and they didn't NEED to do this to protect their copyright (that's trademark that you need to fight to protect.) They could have very easily just turned a blind eye to this and continued going after all the blogs and sites that host DS and Wii games or point to Rapidshare links or torrents or whatever. Nintendo is legally in the right here, but that doesn't make this anything but a dick move. It's a slap in the face to people who did this out of love and, as far as I can tell, weren't trying to make money on this. These are the kinds of people that Nintendo should be encouraging, but I guess when you're selling truckloads of WiiFits you don't have to care about the peons who kept you going through the GameCube years.

That's where I disagree. And most likely, no one NEEDED this movie to go through. Obviously, we all know Nintendo likes to protect its intellectual property, so the easiest solution is to not make a movie out of a Nintendo franchise for four years.
The End

Would you really want to waste a few hours of your life to see a really bad fan-film Zelda film, just to make a statement?
Also, while it is a pretty bad move, Nintendo has allowed the Mother 3 fan-translation to go on without any legal objections. Hell, the Mother 3 fan-translation team even made a strategy guide with no objections from Nintendo. So it's not like Nintendo is completely heartless. I completely forgive Nintendo for shutting down a bad fan-film, since they're allowing the fan-translation of a great game they won't publish in the US to continue.

It might still be illegal, I'm not sure. No ones going to sue you for it though, so it doesn't really matter.

You really don't want to see it. I've seen clips, it is, how you say, "a not so good."
But, if you insist, I'm sure it's still out there...somewhere...
Try typing the words "hero," "of," "time," and "torrent" into a search engine. I recommend AltaVista.

Well, at least they seemed to understand why, though you'd think Nintendo could be a LITTLE bit nicer. I don't see Halo machinima hurting that franchise.

well isn't the most popular machinma sponsored by microsoft? RvB appears on Halo Waypoint and This Spartan Life had gamer pictures in the Halo 3 legendary edition

No, they're not sponsored. Microsoft has commissioned RoosterTeeth to do some promotional videos, but those were all independent. All under "Microsoft's Content Usage Rules".
