NO! You must pick a side and defend it vehemently while insulting competing platforms and its fans regardless of the existence of any data that supports your position. You must maintain this stance of rabid fanboyism until the next generation.

This. Fakefactory has been doing this already for a long time Joystiq as well as providing HD textures and alternative character models (though I suggest for your own sanity you refrain from using the latter).

I doubt Valve would have a problem with this. Although, after the orange box was released, Gabe or someone at Valve have said that they were going to update HL2 & EP1 with the graphical changes and achievements. I guess someone got tired of waiting and decided to do it on their own.

I doubt they'd have a problem with the graphical update, but the achievments could pose a problem. Anyway, I'm waiting far more for the Black Mesa: Source mod. I wanna play through HL1 with updated graphics! (No, half-Life: Source doesn't count, and neither do the Blue Shift upgrades. They just aren't up to par with HL2)

"the xbox 360 version still comes out on top"

Can the xbox 360 version natively render in 1080p? 2560 x 1600? Antialiasing over 4x? No? Then, no, it doesn't.

Otherwise, really cool of someone to do this. HL2 still holds up pretty well, but this looks like it helps a lot. Valve won't try to shut it down. Last I checked they haven't even shot down the people who ported the L4D maps to L4D2, and Black Mesa Source, which isn't even going to require ownership of original half life, has been left untouched. Valve's not going to attack people for improving their games for them. Part of the reason they designed the source engine to be modded so easily is for things like this.

Since when was Quake 1 running at 1080p a better looking game than Crysis at 720p?

The 360 version of Half Life 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 1 was the best looking version to this date.

You're comparing the very first "true" 3D FPS, quake, to to crysis, a game that came our more than a decade later and is the current pinnacle of FPS graphics. I see you're point but it's a ridiculous exaggeration.

Episode 1 to Episode one with slightly better lighting is a different story. I'm sure the newer models and lighting help a bit, but the graphical leap from episodes 1 to 2 wasn't huge, and to me the increased resolution to provide a clearer picture and higher antialiasing to remove the jaggies is much, much more important.

No they aren't. PC version looks better even right out of the box, assuming you can handle the higher resolutions.

It's called an analogy, I'm making a point. Tons of extra graphical effects, way better models, lighting, textures, shadows >>>>> resolution and AA.

Episode 1 is a much more immersive experience on the 360 for the dynamic shadows and HDR alone.

Believe it or not the engine upgrades from E1 to E2 were massive. Maybe you didn't notice it, but if you didn't see that the 360 version was graphically superior I guess you wouldn't see any kind of graphical distinctions.

@WiredKnight it doesn't matter if you don't agree. You're still factually wrong.

Wow, way to take shit too seriously. Ok sure, the 360 version looks better overall due to the effects, but you're arguing the point as if it was a brand new engine, when of course it's not.

@Bradwart

I paid more than 399 for my pc. I can also do way more with it than I can with my 360.

How much did you pay for the PC you're typing on now? Chances are I didn't pay much more than that. And I paid $400 for my 360, and $220 for my PS3, and 200 for my wii. What's your point?

@ Bradwart

And by the end of the 360's life cycle, you will have spent enough money on Live to make a PC look cheap. Not to mention you have no mods, have to wait forever for patches to be "authorized" and you're going to have to pay full price to upgrade to the next Xbox. We'll just need to buy a new videocard.

I don't know why you care, though. You spend so much time on Joystiq I can't imagine you have time to actually play your $399 Xbox in the first place.

@bradwart.

First of all, in my opinion the differnces are not "minor" and there is a lot of merit in the extra cost. You're mileage may vary. Regardless, I'm not trying to get into some stupid PC IZ BETAR THAN XBLOX because I don't care, I have and love both. I'm just saying regardless of the minor changes in the 360 version of Episode 1, it will still look better on a proper gaming pc.

You know, it's utterly depressing that the gaming community is so retarded as to vote my first comment down.

It's like you can't ever have any kind of discussion on any site because there's always some numbskull who thinks he knows what he's talking about but in reality he's a fanboy and an idiot.

considering you people have a computer to be typing here, i think that the sum of your xbox + ps3 + computer easily reaches the cost of my pc.

and if you bought those consoles on launch day, you definitely spent more than i did, don't try to defend it.

and as we all witnessed, the sales that PC gamers get from sources such as steam alone more than makes up for the difference, if any.

lets see, this Christmas i got
Mirrors edge for a savings of 15 dollars at 5
stalker for a savings of 18 dollars at 2 (not to mention i can upgrade the graphics with a simple mod to 2009 standards),
torchlight for a 15 dollar savings at 5 dollars (and a free map editor.. how many map editors do consoles gamers get?),
defense grid for a savings of 7.50 at 2.50,
Batman arkham for a savings of 17 dollars at 33 dollars,
Burnout paradise with everything included for a savings of 22 dollars at 7.50
trials 2 for a savings of 7.50 at 2.50.

so... 57.50 or so for.... 6 games?

but what am i saying, im sure you enjoyed MW2 for 70 dollars as much as i did all 6 of these games.

and then i'll be able to sleep easy knowing that ill get a stream of updates on time.

but to each his own, all methods of gaming are good methods of gaming.

P.S. to the guy who tried to make an argument about the PC not getting the next COD, if so many didn't like it this time around, what makes you think they will want the next one?

If you're keeping score of everything, the PC version obliterates the 360 version because of all the TF2 updates, for the total sum of $0.

Let's see what the score is if/when the 360 finally gets all of those, and what they cost (because Valve's already said Microsoft won't allow them to release them for free on their [Microsoft's] platform).

Not trying to console flame here (as an owner of every console) but in regards of Valve - the PC platform is undeniably the best, and it's no doubt why - Valve is a PC developer first and foremost, and they are in charge of their own content through Steam.
