Luckily, now they got Enzyte, for Japanese Games Enhancement, so Japanese games can come home to a happy wife!

I think it's huge the industry shrank that much (both hardware and software wise) considering it was a year they got another DQ, another FF, another 2D Mario, another Wii Sports, another Pokemon, and I believe another console Monster Hunter.

Just imagine how bad it would have been if those games weren't there to boost the stats.

At least it shows signs that Japanese gamers are gradually being weaned off stat-crunching RPG's and are starting to accept more western genres.

Yeah I hope you're right. I think MW2 debuted in japan with over 100k sold on ps3 alone, which is massive for a western FPS in japan (or any game really).

As much as I love western games, Japanese games just have a certain appeal to them.

Besides, some of the biggest games to come out of Japan haven't even been RPGs. Take Metal Gear Solid for example, or Super Mario.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

There's about as much hope for that, as there is hope that the FPS genre doesn't implode on itself from all the knock-offs of MW2..

They can do whatever they want, as long as my JRPGs, and my Japanese-centric types of games don't die out in favor of more "Western" things. (Guns and tits, etc)

@tmac

if there's one western genre that should get as little Japanese love as possible it's FPS'. the genre's becoming over saturated, and outside of a select few most of it is generic.

now western-rpgs (and western third-person shooters), that's what Japan needs to warm up to.

I don't care what western genre they choose to play as long as they adapt. Anything's better than the typical jrpg crap they normally play.

@Otis Whitaker

"They can do whatever they want, as long as my JRPGs, and my Japanese-centric types of games don't die out in favor of more "Western" things. (Guns and tits, etc)"

See this is what bothers me about fans of Japanese gaming. This quote implies two things.

1. Western games are somehow inferior to Japanese gaming in his mind.

2. Japanese games tend to be more high brow than Western games.

Guns and tits? Japanese games tend to be Swords and tits so is there really a difference? Oh thats right its all about the stories right? You probably think Japanese games are this oasis of brilliant story telling right? Frankly speaking Japanese video game storytelling is a convoluted, overwrought mess that only those with a prejudiced preconceived mindset against Western games attach themselves to seem different when it comes to discussing the merits of geographical gaming.

Give it a rest. Weabos and fans of Japanese gaming are like the last few people going to discos during the Reagan Presidency.

This could be a good thing. Only those games who evolve will survive. I hope we will see more mature games* coming from Japan. More Seinen, less Shounen.

* as in mature themes, not Tentacle Rape

There are some Japanese Genres I wish were more popular in the western world so that they too could be developed more, JRPGs are one of the smallest, but I do love thier Side Scroller shooters like Musha etc.

I hope that with the push of western games, there isn't a complete overtaking of games like that I enjoy, at the same time, I think development is the only way forward, and if devs in Japan stick to the same cycle, I can't possibly se them coming out of it.

Theres nothing wrong with making Japanese games to suit a Japanese audience, just make sure that others can get involved as well and that they contnue to develop. Theres only so many side scrollers, cutesy cats, JRPGs and such I can take, and I can only be bothered to play the most popular ones.

Did you know that when taking a huge dump and eating at the same time, can cause you a heart attack? Well it's true, according to police files japanese people intend to do this a lot when playing FF13. No wonder the gaming market shrunk.

Sorry for this comment im just bored.

4,025,313,000,000 units? There aren't even that many people, why do they need so many?

When I started to read I found it weird. How could that be possible, way more than population???
I went to check...
Jap estimate 2009 population: 127,530,000

Joystiq shouldn't do these mistakes, the number of DS sold is wrong.
Forget the million part... put only 4,025,313

DS Sales Worldwide:
"As of March 21, 2009, everyone's favourite handheld surpassed a major milestone when the Nintendo DS sold its 100 millionth unit after only 225 weeks on sale. This makes it the fastest to 100 million than any other console or handheld."
