I still have a deep love for Nintendo that will never go away no matter how much shovelware they have sold or how many times they have broke my heart.*sniff*

I've been hurt pretty badly. It's going to take more than a real next-gen system to fix these wounds.

DS is nice, though.

Nintendo isn't the company selling shovelware.

Wii fit
Wii music
Wii sports

Also they hardly release any new good games, with the exception of the occasional Mario game.

Also, even though the Wii has had some disappointments. It is NOTHING like the Virtual Boy.

I don't recall Nintendo making any shovelware. Wii Music is probably the worst thing they've put out in the last 10 years and even then that's just on the level of a "Mario Paint".

Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Wii Music are casual titles, not shovelware. Sure, a lot of shovelware is marketed to casuals who don't know what they're buying, but the two terms are not interchangeable. Nintendo makes AAA casual titles, and they've been making them since the '80s, so again, this notion that Nintendo has abandoned their original audience is bunk.

And everyone wants to point to shovelware as a new problem, but that too has been around since the inception of the home console, and is always piled on whatever the best selling system is, whether it's PS2, PSX, Atari, NES, etc. This idea that the problem is unique to this generation and to Wii is just totally incorrect. If 360 or PS3 sold as much as Wii, you could bet the trash would be on those platforms instead.

Love 'em or hate 'em, but they really haven't changed as much as everyone wants to say they have. You can say an unwillingness to change is your problem, but it's definitely not the opposite.

Nintendo has had a higher output than they ever had. We've already got all their key franchises on the Wii, and we're now getting seconds with Galaxy 2, Other M and the new Zelda.

Never before has Nintendo produced so many quality games so quickly. They havn't betrayed you at all, so stop whinging.

I'll be kind of surprised if Wii sells 3 million units on Dec NPD. They sold less last year and for most of this year they've been down 40-50% in hardware sales. December would be their first positive month in 8(?)+ months.

But for the first time during December the Wii wasn't supply constrained.

Last week that VGC reported on (week up through Christmas, i think), claims 1.84 million Wiis worldwide, highest single-week numbers for a home console ever

Milestones indeed

If they really sold 3 million Wiis, I believe that beats the PS2's all time record...right? I think. I can't find the number now, but I thought PS2's all time record was 2.7 million in December of 02 or something.

And yet, the Wii continues to come in last in attach rates and software sales, third-parties are publically abandoning the system in droves, and the core gamer, who grew up with Nintendo and kept them alive through the N64 and GameCube years, has basically given the company a giant collective middle finger.

Was it worth it, Nintendo? Is this really "winning"?

You realize that aside from the attach rate thing, pretty much nothing you said was true, right? They come in first place in total 3rd party software sales, third parties can't be abandoning a system that they never supported in the first place, and the hobbyist gamer abandoned Nintendo precisely through those two generations, it wasn't them keeping them afloat

The only thing they're missing (which is rather significant) is that their software lineup really doesn't reflect those of previous market leaders, due to their apathy towards 3rd parties and the general peculiarities of how this generation played out.

This generation, one system does not "rule them all". The video game industry is probably too big to have everything under one system now. Especially now with Apple's iphone joining in, it's going to get even more dispersed audiences.

On the other hand, if you're looking from an economic point of view, Nintendo has clearly beaten Sony and Microsoft to a bloody pulp. Considering that they've sold at a profit from day one, and the fact that so many developers/publishers have closed their doors and laid off hundreds of employees, Nintendo is still the one generating very healthy profits.

Three million, one month.

Now if third party developers could figure out how to advertise their products correctly - or for those just shoveling in the shovel wear - how to die horrible deaths.
