ESPN reports that Electronic Arts has acquired the rights for NBA Jam and has assigned EA Canada's Vancouver studio to a reboot of the franchise. The game's original creator, Mark Turmell, who currently works at EA Tiburon as a senior creative director, is allegedly collaborating on the project, which, according to ESPN, will "ship to retail exclusively for the Wii."
With no other platforms mentioned in the report, the story sounds a bit off. However, 1UP, which has partnered with ESPN on the sports network's video game wing, has suggested XBLA and PSN versions of a new NBA Jam are also in the works, though that is not corroborated by the original report.
We've contacted EA and Turmell for confirmation and details. EA Sports will allegedly announce the game later this month.
Update: Joystiq has confirmed with Warner Bros. that it did not purchase the NBA Jam license when it acquired elements of Midway. EA's official statement: "We do not comment on speculation or rumor."

I do but I know how it works with 3rd parties. It's going to look like crap, it's going to have crap online and it will probably have crap waggle in it.

"HES ON FIRE!"
I played NBA Jam on the N64 (never owned one personally but I played enough of this game that I bought a controller and a memory pack).
I've been waiting for the game to show up on the virtual console just so I could play it again... but a refresh would be sweet!

There was no NBA Jam on the Nintendo 64. That was NBA Hangtime.

For a moment I felt my childhood revived thinking of once again playing NBA Jam with friends. Those thoughts soon crashed and burned when I read it was being wii exclusive.

Too bad NBA Jam sucks.

So much Nintendo hate. Is the old new-fashion?
I want that game. I want to revive playing that jewel. Yes, I played NBA Jam, a lot, and I own a Wii. According to Bradwart, this shouldn't be possible... But it is.

I didn't say it shouldn't be on Wii, I said it shouldn't be exclusive to Wii.

He never said no one could have a Wii and be in the crowd that loved NBA Jam back in the day, just that a MUCH smaller percentage of Wii owners fall into that crowd than 360/PS3 owners.
Stereotypes exist for a reason. It's not a bad thing in this case, it's just the way it is. The few Wii owners that frequent this kind of site are so god-damned sensitive that they refuse to acknowledge things that are painfully obvious to anyone and everyone who can see things even remotely clearly.

Maybe we're so sensitive because of the arrogance of the Wii haters that seem to think that they know what's better, and that anyone who isn't disappointed in Wii is either an idiot or in denial
Retro remakes have a strong home on Wii. Arcadey sports games are basically the backbone of Wii's success. There is a huge market for this sort of thing there. This isn't to say that there isn't also a very strong market for the game on PS3 and X360, but this is the typical reaction any time any game that PS360 owners kinda want comes out on Wii, they bitch and whine, then make up a fiction that the game would sell better on PS360, when that is very rarely the case.

Keep telling yourself that. The retro crowd is on the Wii. It's about the only 'hardcore' market the Wii does very good in.
I'd love to know you rationale for saying they're on PS360? Is it the Turtles in Time remake that dropped off the XBLA charts in less than 30 days? Maybe you're thinking of R-Type dimensions, a game which nobody bought? Gunstar Heroes? Contra? Metal Slug remake? Robotron? Streets of Rage? Bust-A-Move? Rez HD? (my beloved) Ikaruga???
Any of those games do well enough to warrant what you're saying?
The only old school arcade games that have done truly well (judged by how many people are playing them on the online stats thing or whatever) on XBLA and, possibly, PSN are Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 2, Bionic Commando and then the SF2 remake. Feel free to correct me if you think I should add more to that list.
I'm not fully disagreeing that this is silly to make it a Wii exclusive. I think the bulk of the retro audience is on the Wii still, but it's going to be a hard sell if this is a full priced retail game (and it seems like it will be so far). The notion that the retro gamers are all on PS360, though, is just fanboy revisionist history. PS360 have the adolescent 'hardcore' gamer crowd locked up. Most of them are probably too young to properly play NBA Jam back in the day, if they were even born by then. The ones who fall into the 18-35 demo, which is also obviously very strong for PS360, haven't shown much interest in retro remakes and ports either, with a handful of exceptions.

The key word in the exclusive line is RETAIL. For RETAIL sales, it's Wii. It doesn't say ANYTHING about a downloadable version via XBLA or PSN. Remember, Hasbro game night was available on XBLA before it was brought out on disc for the Wii.

They already did a new NBA Jam years ago, it was called NBA Street.
What EA needs to do is a sequel to NBA Street Volume 2 (3 was not good). NBA Street Volume 2 was pure gold.

First, if I can't play as Barack Obama, I will be very, very disappointed in EA.
Second, If I ever see any of the people here whining that the Wii has no good games, I'll just link them to this article (assuming this doesn't suck, of course).
Third, well, I just hope this turns out good!

As soon as we get some information on a Blitz 2000 for XBLA & PSN wake me up. Otherwise, Wii exclusive games that would benefit from online have no interest to me
