According to Rabbie Bach it's "the TV show Lost as written by Stephen King and directed by David Lynch." He actually said that at the keynote a little while ago. In practice, it's probably a shooter meets John Carpenters In the Mouth of Madness.

Speaking of, there's rumors of a prequel to Carpenter's The Thing in production.

Go figure.

I see... I've been wanting a good survival horror. Been dry. RE5 was an action game, not horror. Haven't played the new Silent Hill though. Siren was alright but the controls killed it for me.

Siren is the closest thing to compare it to in terms of the episodic nature of the content and the tone of the game itself. Heavy Rain will also be pseudo survival horror at least in certain scenes of the game.

Watch the E3 demonstration:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GCAgmV_bLk

You'll see the similarities between In the mouth of madness & alan wake.

Dead Space 2, Dead Rising 2, Heavy Rain, Deadly Premonition (360), Silent Hill Homecoming, Alan Wake & Shattered Memories and maybe you could classify Splatter house, Dantes Inferno & Bioshock 2 as quasi survival horror games for this year. Not a lot in the genre but Dead Space & Dead Rising 2 will be day 1 purchases from myself.

I don't know about day one purchase for Dead Space. I wasn't floored by the first one, it was good but it felt like it dragged by the end. If there's a good pre-order bonus I might go that route, otherwise I'll probably just wait till it gets a bit cheaper, or I can find it used.

How about you actually ship the game before talking about potential DLC, eh?

It actually looks good, though.

I agree. If I recall, this was supposed to launch with the 360 or sometime around it. I'm interested, but it went from a "must buy" to a "If I have time." game.

I think it was announced at E306. That's when Sony looked like a bunch of jackasses, and Microsoft dumped Halo 3, Halo Wars, Too Human, Gears of War, and shitload of exclusives.

God, that was a good year.

after this year's E3 i will almost definitely not be buying it. Then again, I might if only to encourage more unique games, only if it isn't shitty as i think it will be!

Just make the first game good so it can be successful. Then, if it is successful, start thinking about post-launch episodes. Not the other way around.

I'm sure the dev cycle and cost of development prohibits such a thing from happening. This game has been in development for what ... 5 years? About as long as Gran Turismo 5 & Final Fantasy 13.

Cool.... assuming the episodes isn't content ripped from the game AND, this is the big one, I don't have to buy the DLC in order to get the ending or "true" ending or whatever.

Given the chance that they did have DLC when DNF was announced back in 97 they would have been promoting that shit even more harder than the game itself.

I can see it now a Duke Nukem Forever DLC advertisement in a gaming mag like Gamepro back in 1998: "You want DNF? Then your going to kill for the download content for the game. You never seen pictures, videos or touched a demo of it but thats ok because no matter what you think your going to want the DLC 100 times more than that."

I found it distasteful that they feel they are inventing a new "psychological-shalsh-whatever" genre with Alan Wake.

Someone should remind them that games appear on other platforms. The psychological thriller theme has been used in damn near every genre except sports.

They dumped the PC version, or in their words, "shelved it indefinitely". Probably will use Games For Windows Live when (if?) it comes out for Windows giving Microsoft some influence to tell them to make it a timed exclusive for 360 before bringing it over to PC.

Kinda like GTA IV, I guess.

Now that there is confirmed post-launch DLC support, it doesn't look like it's going to come out on the PC any time soon. Usually the ports come out after most or all of the DLC has been released.

This means don't buy the game at launch.
Wait for the GOTY or whatever version that has the whole game in it.

I really don't like DLC like this.

I don't mind new maps and such.

But this is making it sound like if you want to enjoy the whole story you have to buy all these episodes.

Which means your 60 dollar purchase actually turns into a 120 dollar purchase (If lets say it's 800ms for a episode and there are 6 episodes)

I am really lookinhg forward to this but this is a real downer.

Reminds me of having to buy the ending to Prince of Persia pretty much

When you've been in development this long, I think you revoke your episodic content privileges. In the same vein of logic, HL2:E3 better be like ten hours long.

I wouldn't be surprised if EP3 ends up being significantly long. They went from EP 1 which was 3 hours tops to Ep 2 which was closer to 6. I think part of the reason 3 is taking so long is that it's going to be a lot longer. After all, it is the finale in the episodes.

This game, for me, went from a day one to a "Wait till later, hoping for a special edition with all DLC".

I WILL NOT buy a peice of a game, to later have to buy DLC to finish it. I am already pissed at the warden's keep DLC for Dragon Age (Good thing its over 50 hours long, else I'd never play) - it feels like it is there, but they want $7. And Assassin's Creed 2 and removing two chapters to make you pay later. (They are lucky I didnt know of this before release..)

Way too bold a statement for a game that doesn't seem all that special.

I see the Lost and Stephen King comparisons. But David Lynch? Nah the only game director that can come close to that is Suda51.

I'll reserve my judgement until the final game comes out though, hopefully they start working on the PC port.
