In its 2010 Media Industry Fact Sheet, the Nielsen Company tallied some interesting numbers [PDF] related to the increase of social media and how video game console usage trended in 2009. According to its survey statistics, Sony's PSP market in the United States contains a slight majority of female gamers -- 52% of the platform's owners in the region, while 49% of Nintendo Wii owners are female. Nielsen's survey statistics show that, as of 2009, 45% of all active gamers are women.
Social media has, expectantly, made a dramatic leap in usage. Nielsen's survey claims Facebook membership skyrocketing from November 2008 to 2009 with 109 million members accessing the site at the end of the the decade versus about 47.5 million the year before. Twitter saw its user base increase by 15.9 million members in the same time frame. Both social media sites have seen life on consoles.
Related to each console's individual usage -- besides what the good looking gamers enjoy -- Nielsen's survey claims the Xbox 360 is the most played console (ranked by share of total usage minutes), taking 23.1% of the measured playtime. Sony's PlayStation 2 netted second with 20.4% and the Nintendo Wii closed up the top three with 19% of the vote. While we know the previous sentence sounds like we just called all console gamers hideous beings, we just mean that ladies are pretty and smell like daffodils compared to the faint odor of Cheetos and Mountain Dew that lingers around us fellas.

Maybe 52% of people that purchased a PSP are female. If a mom buys PSPs for her two sons, she is the owner.
A gamer should be defined as someone who owns a system or PC specifically to play games. Someone playing Farmville on Facebook is not a gamer.

I'm not surprised the 360 is in the top 3 played systems, the Wii isn't really surprising when you take into account the number of them in the wild but PS2??? I would have thought the DS would be on there before the PS2, unless they count the hand helds and and "regular" consoles separately.

I take offense to this article;
I abhor cheetos and I have never consumed a mountain dew in my life for the sole reason being that it is so popular.
(I'm such a non-conformist that I don't conform to the other non-conformists OR the non-conformist-conformists) ;)

I don't blame the ladies, the PSP is a hell of a handheld. I've had my phat since 05 and never had a dull moment. With the CFW, it was the only decent portable Youtube player I knew of around that time.
I just wished they would of made a better web browser or added more memory to the PSP. I believe the UMD shouldn't of been forced down our throats, moving parts on a handheld is just stupid. The Go was a little to late.

Female here, have it for the games. Lumines, Hot Shots Golf, LocoRoco, Patapon, etc, recently picked up LBP, I love it that I can play it now, instead of buying an expensive PS3 for the one game when I don't really have a nice TV that can show off the PS3 graphics anyhoo. More of a handheld gamer really.
Nice to see that people are actually cluing into the fact that hey! Women are gamers!

Therefore there is more girls playing the PSP!

There are inherent problems here. If you go by minutes played, then the Wii's increased market penetration skews the data. Same with the PS2. For the Xbox 360 or PS3 to make a dent in the PS2 would mean every 360/PS3 user would be logging crazy time into their machine compared to the hour or two Wii users would put in.

My gf plays the PSP a lot. Mostly for JRPG titles. It seems to attract them to the PSP.
I play my PSP, but only for card games... because I'm not going to go buy several booster packs and decks... again.
*looks at box full of cards*
...never again...

Every time I see a Nielsen survey it makes me dislike them even more. I don't have a Nielsen TV box in my home and I definitely didn't get asked about my gaming habits from them. I have never once seen a female with a PSP.

Maybe because they don't want you lookin' at them. :o
...no but seriously, most girls I've seen who play their PSPs rarely play it out in public. They seem more comfortable doing it in the comfort of their own home or inside the study rooms in the library when YOU'RE ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE USING THAT ROOM FOR GROUP STUDIES! GET OUT OF THAT ROOM!!! ... I was going to go sleep in there...
