Sony PlayStation 3 sales 'exceed 3.8 million' worldwide over the holidays

On the heels of its CES 2010 keynote speech, Sony released a chest-pounding press release declaring worldwide sales "exceeding 3.8 million" of the PlayStation 3 during the 2009 holiday season. According to the company, "during the five weeks following the last week of November 2009" (ending on January 3, 2010), the console sold more than during any previous holiday season -- a 76 percent increase over last year's numbers.

Alas, the PSP and the PSP Go were neglected a mention in the presser, though Sony did reiterate the 38 million PSN user number we'd heard a bit earlier. We'll have a clearer picture of what exactly the sales shook out to for North America when the latest NPD numbers arrive next week.

That means that Decembers NPD numbers have got to be pushing one million.

That's incredible if that's accurate. I mean, FFVIII did just launch...
I'm assuming that's right. So, right now Sony's at 31 million. Nice.

Five months ago, the PS3 was at 24 million...now it's over thirty.

Pretty damn big jump.

actually, by Sept 1st the PS3 was at 27 million. Slim, coupled with these recent numbers, probably puts the PS3 at around 33 million now...but that's guess work.

I checked VGchartz.com and worldwide PS3 sales outsold the 360 every week except one in Nov and Dec. Overall hardware looks like its only 5.5 million behind 360. I believe it was about 10 million behind last year. That is a quick closing of the gap. If it keeps this pace (which it will likely exceed), it should take the #2 spot after next holiday season. I'm interested in seeing how the Wii does this year since they have slowed down significantly.

if the PS3 sold close to 4 million, how many did the Wii sell? 10 million??

PS3 and 360 selling about the same is good news for users of both systems. :)

well, for the same holiday period i believe the Wii sold about 3 million in the US alone. 10 million worldwide wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

The figures from VGChartz are just educated guesses. If wikipedia won't accept them then I wouldn't give them much time.

On a more serious note, if you're not already using it, the PS3 Media Server makes the PS3 a really viable piece of hardware to stream movies, music, and images to. It actually makes it the media server it was hyped up to be.

You would think that computers would be considered the "premier entertainment device." Beside the fact that computers don't play PS3 games and vice versa, computers and the PS3 one big similarity: They can do everything.

I'll put my plug in for Ratchet and Clank: ACIT. Great game, and has had me laughing so many times my wife thinks I'm crazy.

I was one of those! $350 Amazon Black Friday Killzone 2/inFamous bundle, $20 Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and LittleBigPlanet: GOTY Edition as a gift. Uncharted 1 and 2 and MGS4 are on my list of what to get next. Any suggestions on any other good exclusives? I buy all my multiplats on my 360

Valkyria Chronicles, if that type of game is your thing.

Good exclusives? Warhawk, Valkyria Chronicles, Resistance 1 and 2, and Ratchet and Clank are good ones.

I downloaded the demo of warhawk...to me the vehicle controls were good but the on foot combat was pretty atrocious...is it just me? and yeah i'll look into ratchet and clank...maybe just a rental for me though

The controls on foot are very suited when actually playing multiplayer matches, not so much the demo.

Also, go to the PS store, click games, then click PSN exclusive games. There's some really good ones.

Demons Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Heavenly Sword, God Of War Collection, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Ratchet and Clank Future: A crack in time & tools of destruction, Hot Shots Golf, Katamari Forever, Disgaea 3, Warhawk, Socom Confrontation (really good especially now), Siren ... not in any particular order or anything.

downloadable games: Super Stardust HD, Burn Zombie Burn, The Last Guy, Critter Crunch, Pixel Junk Monster, Pixel Junk Shooter, Pixel Junk Eden, High Velocity Bowling & Pain amongst others.

Those are good a place as any to start with. Look up some videos or reviews for more detailed information on genre.

You'll also want to look at MAG, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3, Modnation Racers, Agent, Last Guardian, Yakuza 3, Record of Aragest War, DC Universe Online, White Knight Chronicles, Gran Turismo 5 & eyePet in terms of exclusive stuff supposedly coming out this year.

IMHO Demon's Souls alone is worth purchasing a PS3.

I just got an older 40 gig model from Blockbuster along w/ Little Big Planet bundled thanks to 17 free copies of Fairytale Fights w/ the Best Buy coupon/sale "glitch". I also traded in 2 copies for Demon's Souls & Valkyria Chronicles @ Gamestop for the $20 off sale.

All 3 are great games, but Demon's Souls has stayed in my PS3 the past week or 2. I love how brutal it is. Even if you keep dying in the game, it's not as frustrating as it would in any other game. It's almost enjoyable. Just when you think you're the shiznit w/ a new weapon, you get your ass handed to you.

WHAT all those games and you guys didnt say iNFAMOUS? WHY? Its a great game and takes out protocrap, I mean prototype.. BUYT IT NOW!

How could Flower not be listed yet? Other PSN exclusives I think are worthy of mention: flOw, Shatter, Everyday Shooter, Gravity Crash, echochrome, Noby Noby Boy (only if you don't mind something with no real objectives, or if you need a substitute for narcotics). I also thought the rather Defender-ish Astro Tripper was pretty good, if short.

I looked into upcoming RPGs on the PS3, and aside from the previously mentioned WKC and Agarest, there is also Last Rebellion coming next month (though no idea if it's even any good, as Japan doesn't even get it until the end of this month) and maybe Trinity Universe will eventually come to the US.

The ratchet and clank future games are a must. Even if you weren't into their ps2 counterparts (I thought they were just ok), the ps3 games are like a Pixar movie brought to life. Hilarious and gorgeous graphics!

I've been around. Crazy man but just about every time I've been on lately I've been getting attacked left and right by different people.

You been good? Play anything good lately? Last game I beat was Assassins Creed 2 then traded that in today and snagged Bayonetta. Oh and that game Darksiders is pretty awesome and I think would have been one of the better games all of last year. Hope it doesn't get lost in the Q1 shuffle but without any type of marketing or hype I think it just might.

I've just been playing MW2 multiplayer. Haven't had much time to get into much else lately.

Well, yeah, price cut + holidays = MASSIVE DAMAGE.

Next time, how about you price your hardware reasonably from the get-go? I bet it'd save you some trouble on the PS4.

I bought mine a couple of days before NYE and I'm liking it. Played through both Uncharted games(fantastic BTW) a little of Killzone 2 and the MAG beta. Great thing so far is I have yet to encounter a single annoying kid. A couple of annoying adults, but no kids thankfully.

There are, but it's nothing like XboxLive.

"Make believe." So am I supposed to take their 3.8 million tally with a pinch of salt?
