I hope not. If he left EA to form Sledgehammer to make licensed crap games for Activision I'll be extremely disappointed =(

Quantum wasn't bad. Certaintly better than Rogue Agent, Everything or Nothing,or Nightfire.

I wish EA had done more classic Bond games. From Russia With Love was great.

Quantum isn't bad but if he formed his own studio under the Activision umbrella to make licensed games I'd be extremely letdown. Dead Space was awesome and Dantes Inferno is going to be awesome (demo is great) so I expect a lot from them and if its anything to do with James Bond I'll be ... meh on it.

It depends. If he evolves the franchise the way Dead Space evolved the survival horror genre, it might be a very worthy effort.

What ever it is, if it's successful he'll have to produce yearly sequels.

there is talks of their new game being MW3, freeing up IW to work on a new IP. I know IW must be chomping at the bit to get away from CoD but I can't imagine they would build an entirely new studio to carry on the name of such a well established franchise.

personally I hope sledgehammer does something completely new, and that IW does MW3 and then Activision gives CoD a breather for a few years so we don't get sick of them.

This was a really good read, I was really curious about what happened. I was under the mistaken assumption that all of visceral left for activision.

Well not all of Viceral...just most of the creative leads from the dead space team. in addition to glen schofield and mike Condrey leaving, so did a lot of ds1's creative leads. Myself the (Chris Stone) Director of animation, Conant Fong the cinematic director, the entire core animation team, Brett Robbins the creative director, Joe Salud the environment art director, Eric Pavey the technical director, Scott Whitney the Video director, Dave Blizard Lighting lead as well as many of Vicerals top engineers all have left to start Sledgehammer Games for Activision. So no...not everyone...but a powerhouse none the less.

^ wow, some of ex-visceral is commenting here? hehe.

I always wondered what had happened, b/c I was watching some of the dev videos for Dante's Inferno and kept thinking, "I don't recognize any of these people [b/c they don't appear to be in any of the dead space dev diaries]"

I thought it was pretty awesome. Look into Bayonetta and Darksiders for some awesome hack and slash. Not buying god of war 3? Thats probably a mistake.

Thank god for Bayonetta then, it's the bee's knees.

Both the GoW III and Inferno demo left really bad tastes in my mouth. Canned action games piss me off anymore... Used to be static camera angles were for artistic merit, but there was nothing artistic about either of those games. And I'll never forgive them for leaving sticker residue all over my District 9 Blu-ray sleeve.

@ Johnny - Darksiders isn't a hack and slash, far from it.

I do hope that he Sledgehammer can come up with some interesting new IPs.

That said, I was willing to give Dante's Inferno a chance, until I played the demo. It really looked and felt like God of War 2.5. Seriously, jumping from Bayonetta to that was a generational step back in terms of everything.

I did like the animated parts of the DI demo, though. I still don't know why he stiched the cross to himself before going back home. I also hated that Death was such a pushover, no doubt an attempt to make Dante seem badass.

"The transition has been fantastic. We haven't looked back once. I had a great time at EA, we made some excellent games, and I'm proud of the work we accomplished there. Activision offered us the opportunity to start a studio from scratch, create the culture, hire the team and build a state of the art game making facility. Instead of inheriting an existing studio like I did with Visceral, we were now able to create a brand new space, and more importantly, a new culture. It is definitely exciting to walk into a new studio, with brand new gear, that we designed and outfitted to be an environment that allows people to do their best work. In addition, we were able to set the values of the team and the studio in a way that wasn't possible at Visceral."

Translation: Activision offered me a shitload of money, so how could I refuse?

Must be. After all, Infinity Ward keeps renewing their contract (for more money, of course)

EA may not have had the resources to fund his ideas.

By resources I'm thinking you mean money. EA is a powerful company on its own, and the lesser of two evils when compared to Activision, I mean at least they have come up with some new IP's like Dead Space, Bad Company, even Dante's Inferno.

Anyway I'm really disappointed he left, makes me more worried about Dead Space 2. I know that it wasn't just him on the team, but they're, meaning the team at EA, already thinking of adding multiplayer, and that scares me. Sure they're very capable, I mean look at Dead Space that game was the first horror game I played (and loved), but I guess I have faith in them, I mean they haven't even announced a concept yet so.... yeah

It's actually more about getting to make the game you want and make it in the way you'd like to. We have a lot of freedom here and it's a breath of fresh air. EA tends to place the quality of their work at the bottom of all financials. The great thing about SHG is that we actually get the opportunity to create a quality title without having to worry what the latest corp. heads "dropping by" and "suggesting" different things that we should do with the title. (translation, people at Activision do what they do best in their field and leave others alone to do their own creative work)

I understand what you mean and where you're coming from, but Activision is known to pay off it's developers. Money is a big plus at Activision. I mean Modern Warfare 2, being the disaster it is, was all Infinity Ward could do with their "critically acclaimed" skills and such. I mean 2 years, an existing game engine, and a HUGE budget, and that's all they could do? And that's why Naughty Dog is one of my favorite developers

It'll definitely be a surreal experience to play the game and see what stuff we worked on that got cut and what made it to the end :)

Being the massive God of War fanboy I am, I'll try to remain as calm as possible. What's wrong with GOW3? It will, most likely, trump games like Bayonetta, which in my opinion was WAY over-sexualized. The combat system was great, but the over-sexualized style was enough to ruin it for me. Yeah the GOW series has sex mini games, but those are more a running gag, at least after the first game.

Actually Glens and Mikes and all of the teams departure had nothing to do with money at all. It had to do with Quality and commitment to innovation. Activision has given us all the control to make a product both worthy of the DS team, and the gamers dollar. We (the ex-DS creative team) didnt want to stay and push out another version of DS to all of you just to make a quick buck. We want to do something new and exciting and fun...much the same way we did on Dead Space 1..... and Activision is giving us all the freedom to do so. :)

Do you feel that DS2 is being pushed out too fast and is not in line with the team's overall vision of where the franchise is supposed to go?

Initially, I read that Glen wanted to try and make DS a trilogy, though he would be happy if the first game at least succeeded on its own.

In any case, I'm excited to see what Sledgehammer can come up with. You guys did an amazing job of successfully stealing away the survival horror crown from Capcom's RE5.

Thanks fellas, we worked really hard at making DS the project we all dreamed it could be, and we are so proud that all of you (the gamers) enjoyed the experience we brought you. I cant speak to the development of DS2 except to say that it will be exciting to see what a new team can bring to the franchise. I can however say that we at SHG will give our heart and souls to bring the best gaming experience possible back to all of you, and you wont be disappointed. :) Keep your eyes peeled for us in the future.

Maybe Sledgehammer Games will be Activision's new redeeming factor but I think no one takes that seriously now is because of the bad rep they game for making shoddy, money-focused, annual titles like COD and Guitar Hero (and the spin-offs it produces). But then again I felt the same way about EA until they actually started to push quality over quantity. Who knows, perhaps Sledgehammer can do for Activision what Visceral (& DICE) did for EA.

My thoughts EXACTLY! Except I never thought that Sledgehammer could improve Activision's rep, but it is possible! And I am among those who didn't like MW2. I did like it at first, but then I realized they had 2 years, an existing game engine, and a huge budget, and that was all Infinity Ward could deliver. That's more the developer's fault though. BTW should I buy Beatles Rock Band + Rock band 2 for PS3 or 360? I personally can't decide

Its best if you get it on the system you have the most friends with. Naturally I've gone with my 360 cause of that (most of my friends have are on it) but if you already have both systems (I'm presuming) get it on the 360.

What is so great about the 360 version? Just wondering, and you were right I do have both. There's a deal here:http://www.rockbanddealsonline.com/
You can get Rock band 2 Special Edition plus Beatles Rock Band for $150
So I still can't decide but I'm leaning towards PS3, but what are the advantages on the 360 version?

Oops typo

But what I was trying to say was that there are no differences. I'm going on the assumption that since you had the 360 you probably have more friends on it. But if you have more friends on the PS3 you can go with that version. Its a tough one because both versions are virtually equal. Both get DLC and as far as I know neither have any console specific problems on them. My best advice is to get the version on the platform that you have more friends online to play with ;) For you it could be PS3, but for me I have more friends to play with on my 360 than my PS3.
