PSA: The Love Beta is out (or 'We feel like playing Love -- and now we can!')
29
Our illicit affair with pseudo-MMO Love has officially begun, with today marking the the opening of the game's public, but paid, beta. The paid aspect of the beta is minimal, we should note -- a €3/30 days price hardly seems like a lot. As the game's sole developer Eskil Steenberg explained to us in an email after last week's news announcing the public beta, "The Beta is open to everyone, but unfortunately I need funds to run the server farm, so it will cost 3 Euros to get 30 days of access." Moreover, Steenberg stands to make no profits from the beta entry fee, telling us he simply needs "to afford the bandwidth and hardware to keep it running." We're pretty okay with it, if only for the fact that we get to tell people that we're paying such a low price for Love.

Well, how else would he be able to fund it? I'm not sure if it's going to be free when it comes out, but i'd pay for it. especially after that stunning trailer i saw a few months back.
on a off-topic sidenote, love is my favorite bands next album, and it's going to be free, this comment just reminded me of that :P

I watched the demo video as I missed it when it was originally posted and I gotta say I don't get it. I don't get the purpose of the game, why I would want to sink so much time into it, or really the overall general purpose of it's existence. Maybe since it was just a demo they left the uber cool stuff out on purpose but I don't know why I need relay towers and force fields and the token hunting would put me to sleep. So if this game can be explained in 5-10 sentences I'd love (no pun intended) to hear about it.

1) meet people. if they already have a settlement, join theirs. otherwise, look at step two
2) collect tokens (and continue to do so throughout)
3) create settlements with your allies
4) expand and protect your terrain by defeating NPC enemies
that's my understanding so far

It's a great concept, but I fear that it won't survive without the grind of dungeons (or instances, whatever you want to call them) bosses, and loot, etc.
Hopefully it will carve out a niche for itself upon release.

To be fair, the video you're talking about shows more what it can do than what it is. I think there would've been a clearer demo, if it weren't for the fact that we won't really see what the game is like until it's out in the open. From what I can gather, the game is what we make of it. It's about letting the players decide how they want to play it, and giving them the tools to do so. At least, that's my take on it.
Although I'm not sure it will be my sort of game, (only time will tell), if for nothing else I'd like to take part in the beta to show the developer my support. The project is just astounding in terms of scope and artistic design. It's almost impossible to comprehend that this was something created by a single person. It may not be for everyone, but it's damned impressive.

Ok, I figure all the bad jokes have run their course in the first few comments, so I'll talk about the game.
I signed up for the beta, got my code, and created my account (in a very nice touch, there seems to be a way for a friend to play with you as long as your main account is online). I was immediately spawned in a river, where I drowned, hardly understanding what was happening. I clicked fire to spawn again... and was in the exact same place. After spawning, swimming 10 meters, and dying a few more times, I exited and rebooted the game. This time, I was able to actually run around a bit. I didn't have time to get on Vent, which I'm sure would help (I'll play more this weekend), but I have to say that the game is unbelievably confusing, and so far the wikis don't have enough information to be of much help. An update to the UI would be much appreciated. Luckily, movement is fluid and the graphics are stunning. Combat is fun too, although I feel like I'm missing a lot of the complexities.
Anyways, I couldn't play for long this evening, but what I saw was promising (other than the underside of the surface of the water). I would like it if the enemy models were a bit more defined, and the game obviously needs work (a map of some sort, with markings for important locations, would be a godsend), but I was completely enthralled with the setting and can't wait to get more time to play tomorrow.

I'd just like to say that Eskil has been on the Gamers With Jobs podcast, and he's absolutely brilliant, and passionate, and I really hope this game works out for him. I don't have the time or bandwidth to try out the game for at least another week or two, but I really hope everybody interested gives it a shot.

That's the podcast he was on by the way, it's worth listening to because he's just so interesting. Sorry to plug non-'stiq 'casts, but I do it out of love.

A beta should ALWAYS be free. After all we are helping to test the game, and the servers. Video game development is expensive, and if you had enough cash to develop a game I'm sure you can pay for the servers. If not take a loan out, it is a business after all. I know it is a minimal fee, but we are paying to do your dirty work.
