According a Gamasutra user blog penned by "Rockstar spouse," working conditions at Rockstar San Diego -- the studio responsible for not just the Red Dead franchise, but also Rockstar's proprietary "RAGE" game engine -- have been deteriorating for quite some time due to "mismanagement." Claims ranging from a neverending "crunch" cycle to lack of appreciation to straight up "dishonesty" are leveled in the post, with a handful of comments (some anonymous, some from verified ex-Rockstar San Diego employees) corroborating, and often adding to, the complaints.
"This is EXACTLY the reason I left Rockstar San Diego in February 2009," commented one ex-Rockstar employee. An alleged employee speaking anonymously said, "There were extended core hours, frustrations rising, and then a false promise of the dropping of mandatory Saturdays, which seemed to last for about three such Saturdays." The "Quality of Life" issue discussed in the piece isn't a new one for the games industry. It was first brought up in late 2004 with the "EA Spouse" letter (also anonymous), and again mid last year with Epic Games exec Mike Capps.
We've contacted Rockstar and followed up with Rockstar San Diego employees for more information.

This has nothing to do with developers making good games.
The problem is that this approach these companies take leads down an ugly path. You get A game out a little sooner, you make a little more money, but...your developers who got into making games because they love games, start to hate games, they hate the compromises they are forced to make. They then hate their companies, they lose their work ethic by being so downtrodden, and everything suffers. I understand the need for deadlines, but then you need to reassess how many people are on your team, spread the load out. Happier employees always produce a better product, no matter what industry it is. This is impossible to quantify, therefore most company management just ignores it.

Games companies think that developers should be so honoured to work on their games that they should put up with terrible pay and horrible conditions. That's not the way to maintain talent at all. You'll end up discovering that all your experienced employees just leave, and take all their internal knowledge with them. Companies need to realise that a healthy work life balance is the way to go, and even more than that, buy in from the employees. If all the employees feel like it's "their" game they are working on you'd find they're more willing to work hard. How you get to that point takes courage from management. Extreme hours and broken promises is not the way.
Suggestion to the employees working on the game - go get a job somewhere else in the software industry. You'll have better conditions and be paid A LOT more. Then work on your own titles in your spare time on smaller platforms.

I don't think you'd be to thrilled when you were being made to do 12 hour days, mandatory Saturdays and getting no overtime compensation for it. Development plans are supposed to be made to balance the work to be done so the crazy hours don't have to be put in until the crunch cycle near the end of the project, not the whole way through.

So just HAVING a job is good enough? You have such a crappy life that makes that the only important thing? Then become a male prostitute and give a sucky-sucky for a living you'll make a crap load of money. Yea, it would probably be terrible and ruin you for life, but at least you have a job!

As far as I know that's the kind of work needed to produce a AAA title..

And also, there has long been an issue in this industry where people are forced to work extra hours unpaid or without overtime or face a sacking, it's really quite disgusting. Of course, there are many developers that are amazing with their staff and give them great working conditions, e.g EA Canada (They have football pitches and everything!).
And the polar opposite to them is the spawn of Kotick.

Well..personally - if R* are treating their employees like shit then I'm going to boycott R* games. It's the only way to get the message through. R* would do well to look at the reasons why people like Dave Crane etc left Atari in the late 70's. Arrogance destroys companies.

Wasn't this game supposed to be out years ago? I'll tell you how I read this situation. It probably cost tens of millions to run San Diego, and what good games have they made? How much did they make for the company? Are they even making enough money to pay for their own staff? Basically, these guys probably decent at programing games, or game engines, but suck at designing games. My prediction: Red Dead Revolver 2 will be the most expensive game they've every produced, and it's going to suck ass. Remember that game Oni? Same crap.

Some truth to that, but that's not how it should be. Once you get to corporate level like EA and Take Two, you'd best be following the guidelines all business are expected to follow and treat your employees right.
The corporate game devs aren't allowed to operate as hobbiest studios anymore, where it's just a small group of people self-financing to get a game they love out the door where ultimately everyone gets an equal share of the profits. They are profiting at the expense of their employee's well being.

I'm with the employees of Rockstar San Diego, and if this can be proven true, I hope that more than a couple managers get axed.
That said, that letter an excruciating read. It was chock full of lawyer-speak and 50-cent words, but felt incredibly clumsy. They need a new spokeswoman.
