Great news, sports fans -- an EA Sports press release just brought some (anticipated) hoop-shaking news into our dreary Monday morning: NBA Jam is getting relaunched (or, rather, re-relaunched) later this year on the Wii by EA Canada. Details are slim, but the presser promises "new game modes, characters and gameplay depth," while simultaneously "[re-defining] the visuals for a sports game yet again."
Not explicitly mentioned is whether the series' original progenitor, Mark Turmell, will be collaborating on the game. Considering he's currently stationed at EA Tiburon in Orlando, it's not beyond the realm of possibilities -- and if he is contributing, we feel confident that the title will be in gooBOOOOM-SHAKA-LAKA! Woah, sorry. We got a little overexcited there.

I think it's hilarious that Joystiq actually felt it necessary to put "Not the Wii version" under the image...

Still wish we could see some screens, or more importantly, some vids. This has as much of a shot of being shovelware as being good (or great), but it'll be a long time before we can sort out the difference, it seems.

Because it belonged to Midway. If it didn't have the name Mortal Kombat, it pretty well didn't get a sequel.
Hydro Thunder deserved better. One of the best games of all time.

I still own Hydro Thunder. Love that game. Also loved the San Fransisco Rush games. Good memories driving around finding all the secrets as a kid. Good times.

San Francisco Rush and NBA Jam Seconded. A local place had an NBA Jam arcade cabinet, I would rock the Sonics all day. San Fran rush I played in stunt mode with the trippy color jump map for days.

I'd argue that NBA Street vol. 2 is a great refinement of the NBA Jam style and that both could be contenders for that title.

NO NO NO NO NO. Jam was FUN because there wasn't a ton of depth to it.
This ain't the first time they've tried to redo NBA Jam. Remember the one from the last gen? Neither does anyone else.

God, I hope they don't change the gameplay too much.
I also hope they dig up the old commentary voice work, and put it in the game.

So, i wonder if they will update it so instead of being able to use a code to play as Bill Clinton they will have Obama instead... FROM DOWN TOWN

Though that makes me wonder--will they need to get permission to use people's likeness?

Certainly not for the president. The "goo-gobs" of shirts, hot sauce, and obama vs zombies comic books can attest to that.

Maybe they'll be likenesses of other characters from games EA made? Faith, Issac... John Madden?

I'm looking forward to the cameo by "Black Dragon" Jeff Green. Apparently, EA wants him to play for the Zombie Sonics.
... wait, they have a Jeff Green on their roster already? Damn.

Please please please put this on PSN/XBLA also. This game would sell like absolute hot-cakes on there.
Also I love seeing the spin companies put on their games, saying this game, a remake of a decade and a half old game on the least powerful console graphically will "re-define sports game visuals".

Puzzles me why you were downvoted, you speak the truth on everything. Maybe Wii fanboys not wanting their game on other consoles har har har.

It's probably going to be NBA JAM Extreme, but with waggle.

I still deeply regret the day I put my SNES NBA Jam Tournament Edition cart in our garage sale. I was in that "sports games suck" sort of phase and also let go of Madden '97 as well. To be young and stupid =(
The last thing NBA Jam needs is gameplay depth. Hope they keep legacy teams too, I don't know anything about the NBA past the '98 Finals.

If they don't release this on XBLA/PSN I will be surprised....
I mean why not get the MOST they can for this? not to mention its fun to play with friends and we all know that the Wii sucks for online play with games more times than not.....I mean I have had lag issues in Dr. Mario....

NBiiA Jam!
I'm actually really excited for this. There's no need to shove motion controls where they aren't needed. They need to just keep it simple, easy to pick up and play, fun, nice clean look, and hopefully online play.

yeah i agree. motion controls are great (IMO, of course) but they don't have to implemented into every game. some games work great with motion controls. some don't. simple as that.

Er, I don't think they're just going to re-release the original. I'm fairly certain they're actually rebooting it - updated graphics, current teams and rosters, etc. It would make no sense to just release the original game with original rosters.

If it doesn't have the cool secret characters like the original games (ex: Bill Clinton), they might as well not even bother. That's one of the things that made that series really fun.
