Oh, what could have been...

I'd just like Obsidian to actually launch something other than NWN2 expansions.

Though if Alpha Protocol is as unfinished as KotOR II, they'll be on my blacklist for a long time.

Yeah exactly.. I dunno fellas. I love that style rpg the most, but this game's future seems rather drab to me. I wish we at least knew why they keep pushing it back.

The first time wasn't it delayed mear days before release?

Alpha Protocol will be better than Mass Effect 2. Laugh at me all you want, I think it's true if they work on bugs and everything. It will at the least have a better story since Obsidian has better writers.

Yeah, Alpha Protocol seems like a game with a lot of potential. I'm really looking forward to it.

that's not a fair judgment to make Disco. Neither game is out, and Obsidian hasn't released a game since NWN2. Maybe they do have better writers, that's a huge maybe too since i dont even remember anything from NWN2, but you don't know anything about story. They could be the best writers in the world, and maybe this is some half assed crap they shat out for investors.

They certainly have better writers at Obsidian. The man behind the Alpha Protocol story is responsible for such titles as Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, Icewind Dales, Baldur's Gate, etc.

Great so he wrote the stories to games 20 yrs old.. I wouldn't stamp that as a solid win for Alpha Protocal. It's possible the guy lost his magic or interest or both since then.

@whylekat: No, actually the same guys behind Alpha Protocol created Mask of the Betrayer expansion to NWN2. They were not actually involved on the original release of NWN2 because they weren't working at Obsidian yet at that point in time (some were at Troika before it went belly up). I believe one or two worked on Vampire: Bloodlines, which is a pretty cool game despite being unfinished. Part of that blame belongs with Valve, which sold them a half-finished game engine. Half-Life 2 came out a LONG time after Bloodlines; Troika and their publisher couldn't afford to delay the game that long since they weren't made out of money like Valve was (Counter-Strike taking off at the time and selling like hotcakes). Mask of the Betrayer, on the other hand, had a decent amount of time to bake and not only has a great story but also addressed many of the problems with the original game. It isn't perfect, but what game is? (Even Dragon Age suffers from many problems, but code and gameplay wise). Fortunately modding helps. ;) Anyway, I think that if Alpha Protocol gets enough polish then it will be a good game, easily comparible to a Mass Effect. The question will be if the marketing push behind it will be big enough-- Mass Effect 2 is getting a lot of TV ads from GameSpot and EA, but I don't think Sega has the money to do this for Alpha Protocol.

I still wish this was coming....I wonder if it was just a case of them developing it too slowly and sega not having the money to back it or if the game just really sucks.

The answer is usually "Sega didn't have the money".

The gameplay looks rather stale in my opinion. I think the only way an Aliens RPG would work would be with a Fallout 3-esque style. Traveling from outpost to outpost, exploring abandoned Wayland facilities, merc jobs, etc. That's the Alien RPG I would like.

You have to remember that this is probably a very early stage of development.

I understand the game is in an early stage but I don't see what elements they could add to make it more interesting. Looks like your standard, third-person, corridor shooter to me.

I disagree entirely. I think even a fallout3 style would kill the pacing. Aliens are too quick and agile. Pausing the game to issue commands in general seems irrational to me based on the franchise. I think an FPS or Action/Adventure game is the only way go about an Aliens title and not have it feel too slow. Possibly Borderlands set in an Alien universe might work as far as the RPG elements are concerned. But it's possible the AvP game will have something similar.

i...um could barely see what was going on...i mean i know the Alien franchise is known for its dark atmosphere and eerieness but c'mon. wouldve liked to see something like this though. maybe theyll take a crack at it again someday. until then AvP comes out soon anyways. ill get my fix that way :]

This is early in development. It's doubtful the lighting engine was working fully.
