Well, considering what a step back Midnight Club LA was in comparison to Midnight Club 3...

I hear you there. That would suck if the quality of the game suffered because of this fiasco.

Well, GTA IV was a pretty awesome game but it took a different direction than its predecessors did. It's a more serious game. I miss the fun old days of San Andreas, III and Vice City too :( If IV had airplanes, parachutes, bikes, those epic cheats that SA had, flamethrowers, fire extinguishers, etc , it would be the best fucking game ever.

You would think someone from management would respond to the spouse story and now this. A company that I thought was on top of the world sounds like its a hell hole and a shitty place to work. Not to mention one would have to really be careful buying any games that come from the SD office.

Then again, it's one division of an entire company. Maybe the other dev teams have it better.

That spouse story does make you appreciate unionized workplaces though.

the comments from at least one other rockstar studio's members in the Spouse thread indicate it's not really isolated to SD. though it sounds like they have the worst of it.

I feel guilty as someone who loved Midnight Club 3 and didn't pick up MC:LA, even when I saw it on sale for $20.

It's really a last gen series. It needs to end anyway.

Look what happened when Midway did another "Rush" game.

With that programmers are cut. Nature of the beast.

It's sad how often a series only does well on one generation of hardware.

Crash, Jak, Spyro, arguably Sonic, Rush, they all fall into that category.

Jak only has done well on one generation of hardware because it's only been on one generation of hardware...
also all those games get taken away from their creators

I'm not sure how it's "last gen series" that needs to die. Comparing anything Midnight Club related with Rush is dumb. Everything about those situations are 100% different from design, to release, marketing(future for MC) and, of course, quality.

Really? Because MC3 was better reviewed and sold far more than MC2.

MC3 was unbelievably good.

The Midnight Club racing video game series is my favorite series of video games out there, everything else is second for me. So yes, I am saddened to hear this news and hope it is not true.

It doesn't make any sense either why Rockstar Games and Take 2 Interactive would do this. The Midnight Club franchise is the 2nd highest selling Rockstar franchise and the 2nd highest selling Take 2 Interactive franchise. The Midnight Club racing series is one of the best racing series of any racing series. There are still new ideas and innovations out there for future games. Why in the world would Rockstar and Take 2 Interative just stop production of a cash cow and awesome video game series in Midnight Club?

So, if anyone from Rockstar Games or Take 2 Interactive is reading this, all of the series fans and I would like to say please don't stop production of the Midnight Club series.

Well shit.....I have really high hopes for Red Dead, I really hope it lives up to my hype. I also hope those devs at RSSD get what they diverse. It sounds to me like the management is just shitting the bed everywhere. Rockstar is one of the best development teams out there and they should be treating their employees much better then what I've read. If the developers enjoy going to work everyday we will end up with a better product.

A HAPPY DEVELOPMENT TEAM = A HAPPY GAMER

I plan on picking up MC: LA soon. The Midnight Club games are really the only racers I ever enjoyed. I put so much time in to 3 it's ridiculous.

I prefered the Burnout series over MC last gen but I like MC:LA more than Burnout Paradise. I still like Burnout a lot though.

This is sad news to me. I was looking forward to MC:LA2 but I didn't know it was being outsourced. Yes, I'm one of those guys that stick with the developer rahter than the company/game name. I hope MC:LA2 will still be fun to play though.

I liked the midnight club series, when I wasn't puling my hair out because of it. It would be sad to see it go - but in a way it'll never really go, because somewhere I still have it on PS2.

Those who claim that Midnight Club: Los Angeles was a step back in the series are sorely mistaken. It is the game that San Diego clearly wanted to make from the outset but were too hamstrung by the available hardware at the time to pull off. It is without question the best racing game so far in this generation and probably the best arcade racing game of all time.

I get the sense from some of the comments here that people believe "MC:LA sucked and sold poorly, so Rockstar shut them down." The reality is that MC:LA was superb and sold quite well despite being released at a highly competitive time (as evidenced by the citing of Midnight Club as Rockstar's second biggest money maker.) It sold well over 2 million copies, which given the reduced user base of this generation compared to that of the previous titles at the time of release, is quite a success. Also, bear in mind that it sold those numbers in the midst of the worst economic downturn in the last 70 years.

So this is clearly a situation where Rockstar's upper management, for reasons passing understanding, are destroying a profitable and critically successful franchise. On top of that, they've been systematically mistreating the employees responsible not only for this incredible series of racing games, but the core technology driving Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption. This is both inexplicable and disgraceful.

Sold 2 million at what price point I wonder. It dropped to $20-$30 on Amazon pretty quick which to me is a pretty clear indicator of an underperforming title.

Either way you convinced me to add it to my "games I will buy when my backlog gets down to a non-shameful level" list.
