This Wednesday: XBLA gets Serious (Sam)

Considering there's really nothing serious about it -- some of the enemies have bombs for heads -- we're not sure how Serious Sam wound up with its name. It could be comic irony, or perhaps merely for its delightful sibilance. Honestly, we may never know. What we do know is that Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is this week's XBLA release, as promised last month. Sporting newly fancified graphics, online co-op and some serious action (oh that's it!), the game will be available for 1200

Stop. Just stop.

I had to look up "sibilance." It literally means "that which makes the sound of an S." I love it that Joystiq is actually familiar enough with such an obscure word to use it.

I can't help but imagine that spoken with a lisp.

The one I played on PC years back was pretty fun, will definitely give the trial game a play.

I absolutely know I'm going to flamed for this, but I'm not sure how well this will translate to the 360. Don't get me wrong, I'm a console gamer, and I haven't played an FPS on the PC (regularly) in a long long time, but I first played Serious Sam on the PC, and it's so fast and so twitchy that I don't think the 360 controller is gonna cut it.
Please, before you downvote me, present me with a counter-argument. If you give me a reason to recant my words, I will.

My reason to downvote you? You asked me not to. As for the game well... I agree, its like Unreal Tournament 3 on the 360 you need the twitch of a keyboard and mouse to perform well in that game.

No I didn't. I never said not to downvote me. So really you downvoted me despite the fact that you agreed.

True you didn't say exactly "don't downvote me." but you basically said the same thing. You asked for people to not downvote automatically and present an argument. Just typing "downvote" will get you faded out in minutes. Because you said to not downvote automatically I went ahead and did. because i'm a 23 year old with the internet life of a 13 year old.

Are we still living in a pre-2001 gaming world? Halo has proven that FPS's can be done on consoles. Major PC FPS franchises such as COD and Battlefield have been successfully transferred over to the consoles. Serious Sam is not going to be an exception.

I believe the argument is that serious Sam is an oldschool fast paced pc fps. Halo, cod, battlefield are much slower pace compared to this. It probably won't translate as well like the ut series.

I agree that FPS can be done extraordinarily well on the console. I loved Halo 3 and played it regularly for years (on the 360). I played COD and Borderlands and Bioshock and damn near every other AAA FPS to come out on the 360 for the last couple of years. You'll notice by the lack of a Steam tag in my username that I'm primarily a console gamer. I simply expressed doubt that a twitch shooter would work as well on the console as it does on the PC. To my knowledge, there hasn't been a really good offering on the console to dissuade me. If something exists, please let me know and I'll probably buy it. For all I know, Serious Sam is it.

Wasn't Serious Sam on the original Xbox?
Can we cut the crap: "Console Controllers Suck, PC's accurate mouse and keyboard FTW"
We get it. No we got it.

Yeah, Serious Sam was on the Xbox, but its Metacritic rating is significantly lower than the PC version...

I'm not saying that it doesn't belong on the 360 because it's an FPS. I love playing FPSs on the 360. I'm just saying that it's a twitch shooter and the mouse offers more precision and.....
I should just stop trying, shouldn't I?

GTFO troll. The console is an excellent choice for many many games, FPS included.

Jerry, your debating skills are remarkable. Calling someone a fanboy because they disagree with you is a killer argument that only the best of the best debaters use. No need to come up with an actual arguement, reasoning, or evidence to back up your claims. Nope, just call everyone a fanboy and move on.

never understood people that want a mouse and keyboard over a joystiq...
i can access the buttons on my controller instantly, intuitively.
if i were using a keyboard/mouse (i remember doing it all the time in the C64 days) i'd often have to actually look at the keyboard for the right key. mouse? imprecise as hell to me.

Jerry, FPS have more accuracy and better response with a controller. WASD just cannot compare to the analogocity of the left thumb stick. Don't deny it. If you don't agree that the controller has better precision, you are a PC fanboy. Don't deny yourself increased movement response of a controller for the sake of increased aiming response of a mouse/keyboard.

This will be getting bought the minute I touch my Xbox on Wednesday.
Cannot wait.
Also, the Beheaded Kamikazes don't have bombs for head, they are beheaded, and have bombs tie to their hands. And they still manage to scream at you, despite not having a head.

Seems generic. Just reminds me of pain killer and pain killer was probably the last game to get away with such a cookie cutter formula.

oh i liked it too, only played the original on pc. for how linear it was though, i managed to get stuck or lost way too much. and those giant bosses.. damn scary.

I've never played Painkiller.
Serious Sam is fun when it's you and 5 buddies mowing down literally hundreds of enemies at a time. And then you all go through a door and suddenly you're doing the same thing but bouncing up and down on a giant trampoline.
If you can't see the fun in that, then it's just not the game for you.

Wow, I really want this. Old school Serious Sam fan from way back. But wow, I also really wanted it to be more like 800 points.

It's $20 on PC, 360 fans should be happy they get a price break at all.
Posted: Jan 11th 2010 6:28PM Ravnos said
Sucks for you guys. Doesn't change the fact that people are unhappy about the price. I'd personally prefer it to be $10/800 points on either platform. I'm going to hold off for now and hope it gets discounted either as a deal of the week or during the summer of arcade or whatever MS does this year.

That's just stupid. It's not that old or aged, it's more of a full game than most XBLA games, it's a fully featured FPS and it's not like it's Marathon or Duke 3D on theBuild Engine, so how is it not worth $5 more than the average price? The way some of you place a value on games kinda confuses me.

I plan on getting this. I really can't wait for Perfect Dark on XBLA... When does that come. Is 1st quarter all we know still?

15? No deal. Lower it to 10 and I'm all over it. It doesn't even include The Second Encounter.

Is the Perfect Dark you guys are talking about a port of the original or one of the sucky sequels? If it's the N64 game in 720p with Live multiplayer.. Then I also can't wait. Well, I can, but, I, well, you know. Penis.

To all of the earlier posters on how SSHD won't do well with a controller as compared to a mouse and keyboard. That's the beauty of the Xbox Marketplace, they all have a trial version unlike the PSN. If you don't think a controller won't keep up with the frantic gameplay, then don't buy it.

Just played the demo and LOVED it! (Hmm... there goes $15.) It really is a lot of fun. Try it if you haven't yet.
