In an interview with Financial Post, Microsoft president of entertainment and devices Robbie Bach said "something like 70% or 80% of the publishers in the world" are already working on Natal-based games. The interview followed Microsoft's CES 2010 keynote during which Bach announced the hands-free controller for the Xbox 360 would launch during the 2010 holiday season. Bach also respectfully outlined what he believes is the major difference between Microsoft and Nintendo's respective business models: third-party success. "Our model is certainly about third-party publishers making money. We design our system for third-party publishers," he told the Canadian news outlet. "[Nintendo makes] most of their money through first-party games that Nintendo produces. That's absolutely their business model. And it's a great business model, it's just different, but it makes it hard for third-party publishers."
As for upcoming Natal-based games, Bach said Microsoft's first-party developers are focused on the hardware to help lead other developers down an "innovative" path. "We want to have a few titles from Microsoft that show the way and then we want the breadth and power of the ecosystem from our partners to bring lots of new ideas, new innovations, new concepts to the marketplace."
Microsoft's Project Natal appears to be a direct response to a mainstream audience that has turned to Nintendo's hardware when spending disposable income. Considering the Xbox 360 and PS3 have effectively cracked the third-party code, Microsoft's focus continues to be set on capturing a demographic that may feel intimidated by the hardware and its core (read: jerkface) players.

I hate to be a downer, but I really don't want Natal. I've been so turned off by their tech demos, their attitude toward the device, and the lack of real data. Now, if they show some real demos, that look good, okay. But everything has been mediocre.

I don't want to see the best devs work with this at all. I like playing games being lazy. I don't want to move around after work or at 1am. plus plus all this motion shit is taking away from what they should be working on....
a damned controller with a touch screen on it. When I drop a predator missle I wanna control that on a screen in my hand, when I slip a snake-cam under a door I want to see it on a screen in my hand. When I look at a map I'd rather it be right in my hand. I want radar to be in a device in my hand so that if I look at it I have to take my eyes off of the screen and become vulnerable. Imagine having to reload a gun by looking in your hands to see if you have enough bullets and then have to do an on screen gesture to reload. You would be interacting way more than pointing off screen and wanking the controller.

So, you want the equivalent of a modern Dreamcast controller with a VMU updated to today's tech?

Yes, it deserves to bomb hard. Nothing good can or will come with Natal for real gamers, just like nothing good came for us from the Wii.

I fail to see how a touch screen on a controller would be a gimmick. Is the DS a gimmick? Because, I thought it was a critically acclaimed handheld. there is no reason that the tech wouldn't work on a console.
it would allow the developers to have an input that can be customized for their game.
If something is chasing you down a hallway I guarantee it will be a lot more immersive if you have to look down at your hands without pausing, and having to choose reload off of a screen to reload a weapon, instead of just hitting X or waggling a wand while on the run.
imagine controlling that little robot in MGS4 in first-person view through a iphone-sized screen in your hands.
just think of what could be done with a batman game! you can't tell me that wouldn't be cool.
immersion is obtained by engaging one's attention as well as having them physically interact.

I can actually imagine alot of publishers being more eager to put their big games on the PS3 exclusively during this 'Natal Era' they keep coining, taking advantage of the PS3's sub-processors to create more detailed games and then the 360 becoming the more casual of the two consoles.
I can also imagine it getting to a stage where nearly all of the new exclusives for the 360 being Natal games in the future.
I wouldn't like that to happen personally.

Does "natal-based" mean it recognizes you and loads the appropriate profile, or that the game supports the feature where it pauses when you say "pause" ? Or does it mean that you can control a significant amount of the game's actions using natal?

Natal based mean you use only Natal to interface with the game.

After playing "casual" Microsoft titles like 1 vs 100, honestly, I'd like more of these types of games. If, unlike Nintendo, MS can focus on the whole family of gamers and potential gamers, then this could very well succeed and still be fun for core gamers. The problem with Nintendo's approach to motion controls is that there's just no quality assurance. If they simply made sure that offerings for Natal were actually functional and actually, you know, FUN, then I'll be on board.

Everyone's so fucking negative towards Natal. It's not like all the 'hardcore' games on the 360 will suddenly stop coming out. They want to appeal to BOTH crowds, casual and 'hardcore.' If you don't want Natal, don't get it.
Posted: Jan 12th 2010 10:47PM (Unverified) said
Really? What if Microsoft starts making their 'hardcore' titles require Natal? Fable III is a likely target. Future Halo titles (beyond Reach, and without Bungie involvement) would also be likely. What's to say Turn 10 won't be told "drop Forza and make a Natal racer"
Wouldn't that hurt the hardcore?
And the third parties! If more casuals buy the system and skew the balance of hardcore/casual, that means we end up with a Wii like software catalogue, living off of the few decent first party titles and an even smaller number of third party releases.

Super Monkey Ball was great on GC. With motion controls the main game is very difficult to play properly. It's only saved by putting in 50 minigames, some of which are actually a bit fun.

Would someone please define "hardcore games/gamer" and "real gamers"? These terms get thrown around a lot and I still have no idea what exactly they mean which makes talking about Natal pretty difficult with volatile commenters...
Posted: Jan 12th 2010 11:46PM (Unverified) said
Casuals are considered the gamers who buy a title every now and then, don't really get into hype, they just have 'fun'.
Hardcore guys are the ones who actively buy their games, get hyped up, buy their consoles early, etc.

I consider someone a hardcore gamer who is on these blogs and is current with the state of affairs in the industry. Someone with varied tastes across multiple genres that is passionate about not only the games but also the culture and lifestyle of gaming. A casual gamer is the opposite of that in my opinion. A casual football fan is someone who might tune into the super bowl and maybe a few other games but won't know who is leading the league in various statistical categories and what the standings are throughout the season, who is injured and who the best rookies are or even who was drafted in what position.

Well done. The only one that could sell this better is Glen Beck with his chalkboards. In fact I heard that Robbie Bach raped and murdered a girl in '91. A year later then Beck so no cigar.

This is a pretty funny read about that whole situation. I love people giving Beck a taste of his own medicine.

i think judgement on the natal should be reserved until after its release, until after its had an appropriate amount of time for developers to get use to a 3d mocap camera as an input device. Nintendo brought out terrible shit, no denying it however Microsoft and Sony are not Nintendo, their machines are alot more powerful than the Wii and they know they have a different player base.
Im sure there will be games which hardcore gamers will scream shovelware, and casuals love, but i dont see either of the companies walking into motion controls without giving appropriate thought to the "hardcore".
Some of you which are screaming about how crap natal is, have no idea what you're talking about, you sit behind a computer screen screaming about wanting sequals to games rather than new IP, well guess what, creating new IP is a good thing, rehashing the same crap idea over and over again is counter productive to growth. How about we all take a big "shut the hell up" pill and wait to see what ends up happening, and for the idiots out there, new IP does not just refer to games.

Likewise some people saying Natal will be great have no idea what their talking about. No one knows because we haven't been shown shit except pre rendered garbage from E3 and Jimmy Fallon playing dodgeball and a shitty version of Burnout.

its not really an analogy, Natal and w/e Sony's motion controller is called, is new intellectual property. if i related it to a different subject then it would be an analogy, for example: when the original xbox came out, everyone was against it, but after awhile people gave it a fair go and liked it.

Wow, I didn't realize your Xbox was going to get up and leave you if you didn't play Natal games on it. Get a grip guys.
I can only imagine that the complaints levied against the Wii have taught developers a lesson or two, and it's not crazy to believe that Microsoft is doing a lot to ensure at least an initial level of quality in Natal games.
Also, a lot of you sound like entitled fatass slobs: "Waa, I don't want to have to move around, gaming is for the lazy, etc." It's pretty pathetic. I don't really play my Wii, but I've enjoyed a few games on it, and I refuse to believe that it's not possible for the Natal to have some really fun games too that hinge on motion control. Remember, there's a whole world of action-based games (read: sports and other 'games' like bowling or archery) out there that is vastly more popular than video gaming, so there must be something to it.

Maybe if you had to work 12 hours a day, come home to kids, pets and a household you'd understand the difference between wanting to relax to gaming and having a seizure to play a game. It's not about being Jabba the Hut its about relaxation. If you want to stereotype everyone here and be a dick because they don't live at home with mommy and have actual lives then you look like the idiot.

I said a lot, not all. And I'd bet that the number of people who relax/destress after work, me and my girlfriend included, by going to the gym is higher than those who come home to video games (which I do after the gym). I stand by my point that there is and will continue to be a market for people who want to play with a controller (me included), but that doesn't mean there can't be a market for other types of input too (if they can be good).
What annoys me is all the chicken littles here who seem to think that motion control somehow imperils there current lifestyle.
