EA: Expect a 'major MMO' in 'Spring 2011'

EA CEO John Riccitiello mentioned during the company's reduced earnings conference call yesterday that the publisher plans to launch its "major MMO" in the spring of 2011. With no other announced "major MMO" in the works at Electronic Arts, the common wisdom of the Jedi (which can sometimes lead to bad things), points to that being Bioware's Star Wars: The Old Republic's release window. The company refused to elaborate further or acknowledge what game the executive was talking about.

Eurogamer notes that other possibilities are Realtime Worlds' APB or Need for Speed: World Online, but neither has the hype of the Star Wars game. Of course, there's also a chance that EA has some super-secret MMO hidden away like a Sith apprentice.

Mass Effect MMO would sound cool especially if they got the complexity of EVE but through a simple console like interface.

Although BioWare belongs to EA, the publisher for The Old Republic is LucasArts.

Exactly! I totally think they're talking about something else. LucasArts is definitely the publisher on this one, not EA. Even if SWTOR is being released in 2011 EA wouldn't announce something like that for a game they are not publishing. New IP!!!

There's no way BioWare would have announced The Old Republic that early. The hype would kill it by then. 2010 for TOR is certain.

WoW was announced 3 years before it's release. The hype didn't kill it. I think 2011 is just as probable as 2010. Although their publisher is LucasArts.

I hoping for a Smurfs MMO myself.

Shit, I won't mind the wait. I have like 8 months worth of games alone from Steam's black friday + holiday sale, Star Trek Online which will probably last me 6 months, and then WoW: Cataclysm which will last me another 8 months roughly.

Extremely rough figures. I am fucked. Both financially, time-wise, and productivity-wise. I don't even RAID!

Hopefully it's APB. But to be honest Guild Wars 2 is the only MMO I'll be playing. TOR doesn't have enough to interest me and I'm not too up on subscriptions either.

I've just now seen that trailer for the first time and WOW that is killer!

yeah and it's just as good when you rewatch it. even better than the Blizz movies, which is saying something

what "The Clone Wars" should have been. There was so much potential, and they turned the whole franchise into a freakin' kid's happy meal. Maybe TOR will restore some of the awesomeness that used to be Star Wars.

It won't matter, for me at least. Between TOR and Cataclysm, my MMO schedule is going to be pretty full....

I was thinking about Warhammer 40k online, but then I remembered THQ holds that license. I felt only relieved about it, given how crappy the WAR thing was.

BioWare just confirmed that SWTOR will release during Spring 2011 in the SWTOR forums.

They confirmed they are targeting a Spring 2011 release date. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it got delayed.

The problem with that trailer is that there is no way the game could ever actually be that awesome.

No matter how much I want it to be...

Someone please enlighten me: Why does everything in the above trailer look exactly like in Episodes 1-3 (the building, the ships, the tech etc.), when the game is actually situated some 4,000 years before the movie's time period? It doesn't make sense to me. The droid looks a bit prototype-ish, but I won't believe it takes that many years to go from this to R2-D2.

Come on, this isn't a trailer for a MMO. This has to be a movie trailer!

Seriously, I liked the Star Wars movie, but they couldn't make one movie sort of like this trailer?
