Wow, and here I thought the game was looking terrific. they sure are good at fooling us with all the great trailers and hype. If this game deosn't sell that well, it could spell a lot of trouble for Rockstar.

I really hope this game gets finished, and is able to go through proper QA so we get a polished game. After the past few video previews, this has shot up to the top of my most anticipated release of this year.

My money was RDR's to lose until I saw that letter from the "Rockstar Spouses" earlier this week. Since then my spidey sense has been tingling. I'm sure it will get put out but in what condition will it be in? This sucker might have been a pre-order for me, but with all the news of employee discontent I do believe I'm going to sit back and check out the reviews before I shell out any of my hard earned cash. I've got my fingers crossed that this is just a mole hill sized mountain, dug up by the naggy wife of some Rockstar San Diego bottom-of-the-ladder code monkey, pissed that her husband missed a few dinners. We'll see come April.

You would think theyd be promoting the hell out of it. But as it stands this game has virtually no hype because theyve been so secretive about it despite having a release date just around the corner.

I dont see this game selling very well, theyre waiting way too long to show what exactly this game is, it takes time for word to get around to everyone and build hype.

It could also be that they feel they've sunk too much money into it and are feeling skittish about putting forward the money now the market it properly.

Yeah, it might just be a case of cutting their losses at this point, and sending it out to die.

Tragic, but possibly necessary.

All they have to do is put in some kind of scandalous hot coffee in the game and make sure Fox News hears about it.

videogame + sex + the press = games flying off the shelf

I hope this game gets fully developed and I think/hope this isn't quite as bad as we are reading about.

It sounds like there's a bigger story here than a 350 word blog post. I hope Joystiq get's this story right. They have the potential to do real video game journalism here folks.

"The good news is they [Rockstar] are not expecting to make money with Red Dead Redemption. At this point, that project is just supposed to prove that the San Diego studio can make a great quality AAA title."

And this is why Rockstar is awesome.

It's kinda sad hearing that a game I was anticipating is doomed even before release. If they are smart, they would use any extra time to support the game with great free & premium DLC.

Too bad. Since discovering Jonah Hex at my local comic shop, I have been interested in a quality western genre video game.

By the sound of it, RDR will be released as the typical "buggy but had lots of potential".

Too bad. Seemed like an atmospheric masterpiece. The studio clearly has potential, but Rockstar's higher-ups need to step in and purge San Diego's management, clearly.

Either that, or the whole studio is just toxic, and the better parts of it (the ones that made that intoxicating art style, for instance) should be salvaged and sent to other divisions.

This news puts me in a bind, as I was really looking forward to this game, but the news of blatant mismanagement and borderline abuse make me lose all my faith. Why should I reward the company's management by buying the game brand new? And for those saying they are doormats, the employees obviously love games enough to have been there from before the economic downturn, and they want to keep earning money for their families now that it's hard to find a good job. If all of them quit, the studio would derail and might get the message, but if even half the employees didn't quit things wouldn't improve. As long as someone is around to bring the new employees up to snuff, management wouldn't be forced to care.

With all this drama going on behind closed doors at Rockstar, I think the Houser brothers have found their new script for GTAV.

"Specifically, the devs are sick and tired of having to gimp the PS3 version just to make it work on Xbox (all Xbox, even the HDD-less ones). Their time is better spent writing great code, not exploring workarounds for silly limitations."

That's so lame...there should be no kowtowing to the lowest common denominator.

It sounds like that even if they do make a profit, the management (that's running the studio into the ground) is going to soak as much of it up as they can and the ones being overworked will be neglected further. It's one thing to have pressure and long hours at a job but when employees aren't rewarded for their sacrafices, they start to not give a crap and when they don't give a crap they overlook a lot.

I'm just thankful I wasn't really looking forward to this. GTA is the only franchise I usually look forward to from R* and even the last one of those (for the console at least) was pretty lame.

I'm expecting RDR will be just as lame but it will also look just as good doing it.

And don't worry about R* they're experienced enough with hyping, they could get people without TVs interested in it. The pastyear they managed to get a lot (more than I expected at least) of gamers to buy extra missions with a few new toys at $20 a pop. It will sell fine, but their integrity might suffer further.

Quite frankly, I think all of this is unwarranted. This is the only site and time I've heard anything about problems at Rockstar. And judging from the previews I've read by other sites, the game is going to be great. Gamespot and IGN are just to name a few, and they had only positive things to say about it.

It seems to me that there is nothing to worry about the quality of the game, and the employee this came from is probably just bitter towards Rockstar over something irrelevant, and is just looking to dirty the prestigious Rockstar name.

And as far as the financial trouble that Rockstar is apparently in with this game, until I hear it from a named source, like Dan Houser, I wouldn't trust it.

One thing that jumped out at me is the comment from yet another unnamed source, when they said, "Red Dead [Redemption] has been in production for six years (mainly because of horrible management/lack of direction due to fear of disrespecting Rockstar NY) and it will never get the money back in sales it cost to create for those six years.

"It doesn't make sense to me. It isn't as if Rockstar hasn't been creating games all this time, it isn't as if all this time has been spent on Red Dead Redemption. Grand Theft Auto IV has been released, along with the two expansion packs. I really don't think this is a cause for worry, as we have heard no official word from Dan Houser or any other senior executive of Rockstar.
