- IGN (85/100): "A disaster movie in a game package, Army of Two: The 40th Day capitalizes on its co-op play to deliver an awesome action experience that's incredibly fun to play."
- Official Xbox 360 Magazine (80/100): "Marry that to some satisfyingly chunky gunplay and the odd spectacular, building-levelling explosion and you have an action game that is far more fun than it has any right to be. You get plenty of co-op games, but not that many 'buddy' games and this is a fine example - a frantic, punchy bullet-storm that's best enjoyed with a friend."
- 1UP (B): "Even though I think they ultimately contributed to the Army of Two's inconsistent tone, which moves from "flippant" to "serious business about how messed up people can get," the morality moments are what I'll remember most about The 40th Day."
- Game Informer (65/100): "With so many great co-op experiences available to gamers, it's tough to recommend The 40th Day. Lacking a cohesive story, solid controls, key multiplayer features, and polish, this sequel fails to close the gap of mediocrity running through its core game design."

You've already heard our incredibly well-thought-out critique of Salem and Rios' latest mercenary endeavor, Army of Two: The 40th Day -- however, we understand your impulse to shop around. Here's what some of the other reviewers have been saying about the supremely bromantic game.

It was a rental pretty much from announcement. I think it's pretty safe to assume just about everyone knew what they were going to get with this game, for better or worse. It's one of those games you play with a fellow dudebro for a day or two and forget about forever.

Every reviewer except game informer gave it a score in the 80's. How is that awful?
Also, after playing the demo, game informer's is the only score I agree with. Game is crap.

According to Game Informer this game is bullshit. Call me crazy, but I trust my wallet.

Do you mean you trust Game Informer? What does your wallet tell you to do? If your wallet says to wear teenage runaway's skin I would contact the authorities.

Just my personal review, I found the game to be around a 6-7 out of 10. I just completed it about 30 minutes ago.
Pros
- Graphics are improved.
- Partner AI in single player is improved.
Cons
-The plot/storyline is non-existant, you get a little to no explanation of what is going on, other than the city is being destroyed.
-There is not alot of differences in weapons due to the modifications that can change the profile of the weapon.
-I really enjoyed the contract and subcontract options in the previous Ao2, in 40th Day you get money for completing a chapter, for no reason, since there are no contracts and you are just progressing through the town.
-I found the game to be relatively short, with a 4-5 hour playthrough with little to no challenge on normal difficulty.
-Morality decisions hold no consequence that I could tell, I chose the good choices in every decision and basically short changed myself out of alot of $, but got nothing in return by the end of the game.

I didn't choose bad morality options, but all of the bad morality usually had some type of monetary or weapon attachment reward. The good morality choices had no reward. I was hoping for some type of story reward (i.e. Bioshock), but got nothing. I do however recommend saving the civilians, it's the opposite of the bad morality story line options, where saving a civilian gives you $/mods and not saving gives you nothing.
So basically, let the russian rape the girl, let the kid shoot a gun and nearly kill himself, kill the other merc, but save the civilians.
After reading game informer's review, it really hits it on the nail, I would definitly say make this a rental and not a purchase.

aww, that's too bad. I'm still getting it though. Simply b/c I really liked the first one and I'm too lazy to bother with gamefly or nearby rental stores. Too old to be chasing down available copies when it's just easier to front the money and then toss it on half.com or ebay (if it's really that awful; that's only for games that deserve a small, special place in hell such as Jericho or Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2).
I'm not too wrapped up in the moral choices (a feature that's been overblown in this gen so far), but that's kind of poor that there's absolutely no benefit for being virtuous.
The MP is hopefully fun. Maybe the gunplay is fun enough to warrant replays.

Gameinformer talks about other co-op experiences - what other ones are co-op story driven games? The Xmen Legends and Rainbow 6 Vegas franchises are two that comes to mind, but the rest are all single player games that you get an extra person for. I'm discounting firefight and those sorts of MP modes - I'm talking about a two+ player story experience.

Wouldn't Halo 3 count, since one person is the Chief and one is the Arbiter? It does make shield, HUD, and other differences.

Well then you're not talking about this game either, because evidently this has 0 story.

Have you noticed the general tone of their magazine has changed over the past few months? Their attitude toward the readers has become smug. You can really see the bitterness print media has towards game blogs like joystiq. OXM talked a little shit about the 'stiq a few months ago on their podcast. It all seems like sour grapes.

Elaborate more, I'd like to see someone else's opinion on gaming magazines.

I still like them, but they are pretty shitty. OXM is maybe the worst, for too many reasons to list. GI is better, mostly because they're the last big gaming mag, so they occasionally get exclusive stuff like the announcement of AC2, Brutal Legend, Dead Space 2, or the first to have details like their next Halo Reach story, but besides the cover stories, everything else is pretty much an exercise in banality

The demo sold me on NOT buying this game. But, I rented it and have played about an hour or two thus far. The demo actually sells the game short in my opinion. It's really not terrible but not anywhere near as good as Bayonetta or Darksiders. It's another 3rd person shooter that isn't anything special (like most of them aside from a couple like uncharted, MGS4 & gears). Solid and fun but nothing worth spending $60 on in my opinion.
