New Assassin's Creed with 'multiplayer mode' due by April 2011

Well, this is a shock. According to a recent financial release from Ubisoft, we can expect a new "episode" of Assassin's Creed within the company's next fiscal year, starting April 2010. That includes this year. Want another shock? It's going to have an "online multiplayer mode." Considering the second in the series has already moved six million units, it's not a huge surprise, but this does seem pretty darn fast.
Now before you get too excited, this doesn't necessarily mean we'll be getting Assassin's Creed 3 by next April -- the release stops short of applying a number, and the use of the word "episode" leads us to wonder if this will be some kind of DLC add-on [Update: Gamasutra says it was told by Ubisoft that the note in the release "refers specifically to an entirely new game and not content associated with AC2."] Heck, there's not even a platform mentioned. We're contacting Ubisoft for clarification as we speak.

Online multiplayer Assassin's Creed? Meh. I hope Ubi uses the time to work on making AC3 even better than this last game, and doesn't waste a bunch of time on multiplayer stuff. Single player is fine for some games.
After the awesomeness of AC2, it's gonna be a long wait for April 2011 for AC3.

Well I'm not surprised at all. I mean we already know there will be DLC. What you should keep an eye on is what the online feature is. More UPlay stuff? or are we all going to be running around stealth attacking each other a la MGO CQC Only matches....

Multiplayer? God damn you brainless ADD people, doing this to another single player oriented game. I can't wait to play the 1000th game this gen to have team deathmatch slapped on it, that no one will play after month 1.

Next thing you know, Final Fantasy XV will have online multiplayer.

Maybe it's co-op rather than versus? That seems like it could be ok. Or stealth-based objective games somehow? That seems like it would ....suck, but it does seem like something they might try.

Just wait for the future, when there shall be no more single player campaigns, only multiplayer games.
And every single game shall just be Team Deathmatch, over and over and over and this is the way gaming ends, this is the way gaming ends, this is the way gaming ends - not with a waggle, but a teabag.

Yeah MMOs are different, besides he said 15.
At least RPG developers haven't caved to the mindless masses with multiplayer yet, although I've heard early rumors of multiplayer in Mass Effect 3.
I swear to god I'll kill someone if that happens, probably the closest dudebro I can find.

I kind of want multiplayer in Mass Effect, so you might have to kill me dudebro. RPGs with competitive modes rock... Pokemon? Golden Sun? Final Fantasy Tactics Advance? Phantom Dust?
I can understand someone ragging on generic deathmatch, but going into a 1v1 competitive match with your own party that you built from scratch is fun as hell.

Uncharted's multiplayer is beyond awful. Now, thankfully the single player didn't suffer because they hired extra people just for that, but the game could have definitely done without it.

Actually, I would love a coop RPG done right. Something like Castle Crashers but...idk, maybe you need 2 or 3 players to figure out a puzzle or something. It would be hard to pull off, but awesome.

Actually, a mode where one guy plays the assassin has to hunt down 15 guard players in a large map without being detected. It could add a disguse feature to allow the assassin to truly blend in and cause an automatic loss for any player that kills more than three innocents to avoid random slaughter for the guards to win.

Or maybe Naughty Dog can take some pointers from Ubi, because AC2 was the better game.

I don't think that, I know it. It's superior in every way except graphics, and it's not exactly light years behind Uncharted in that category.

Well, I personally thought most the characters in ACII were terrible. Desmond in this one was like Nathan Drake's retarded step cousin. The story is too overly complex and it just doesn't have the same appeal as Uncharted.
And yea, the graphics are way behind.

Uncharted 2 didn't raise the bar for anything. It was literally 1 with better graphics, it didn't really expand on anything the first game did. AC2 was a masterpiece and complete and total improvement over 1.
Get over your sony fanboyism enough to at least see that U2 isn't anything all that special.

Why is it when you make a constructive comment people take it to one extreme? Uncharted 2 is pretty special, it has a load of awards and fans to prove that. Assassin's Creed 2 was pretty damn good as well, like I said, they are my 2 FAVORITE IPs. However, I think if Ubisoft took some pointers from Naughty Dog (who currently know how to use the PS3 to it's best potential obviously) Assassin's Creed 3 would be probably the best game known to man.
Not once did I say make them like each other, or use the same mechanics, but just use Naughty Dog's mastering of the system to help improve the graphics and possibly optimize the game to play like Uncharted 2, which is by far the best experience available on the system.
Just like Motorstorm was the game to demo the PS3 graphics when it first came out, Uncharted 2 is the best game for that currently.
So go ahead and down rank this comment too, since constructive criticism isn't welcome.

Makes sense. Assassin's Creed came out in 2007, and the sequel came out two years later in in 2009. Seems like a trend that it takes a while to produce the first game in a series, but the sequels only take two years to produce.
I'll place a bet that Modern Warfare 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Episode 3, Uncharted 3, will also come out around the same time as Assassin's Creed 3 in 2011.

Subtract a little time for a reused engine, add some time for development on a new console, etc.
If Ubisoft uses the same engine from AC 1 and 2 for 3, then I don't see any reason why they couldn't get a game out by April 2011. I'd put money on November 2011 at the earliest though.

Hmm... The little mini-game of capture the flag in ACII would be cool online. Also, the end of ACII basically said "this game is a trilogy" but I didn't expect it so soon.

Why would the setting have to be modern for multiplayer?
The developers have already said they don't want to do time periods that everyone else has already done anyway.
