New Assassin's Creed with 'multiplayer mode' due by April 2011

Well, this is a shock. According to a recent financial release from Ubisoft, we can expect a new "episode" of Assassin's Creed within the company's next fiscal year, starting April 2010. That includes this year. Want another shock? It's going to have an "online multiplayer mode." Considering the second in the series has already moved six million units, it's not a huge surprise, but this does seem pretty darn fast.
Now before you get too excited, this doesn't necessarily mean we'll be getting Assassin's Creed 3 by next April -- the release stops short of applying a number, and the use of the word "episode" leads us to wonder if this will be some kind of DLC add-on [Update: Gamasutra says it was told by Ubisoft that the note in the release "refers specifically to an entirely new game and not content associated with AC2."] Heck, there's not even a platform mentioned. We're contacting Ubisoft for clarification as we speak.

Why do developers/publishers think that every freaking game needs an online, multiplayer mode??? Seriously! Metal Gear? Uncharted? Why??? Super lame.

This could be great news, it certainly seemed at the end of AC2 that we'd jump right into Desmond and play as him in AC3, but if "episode" means anything, maybe we'll get to go to all the awesome historic settings people have been thinking of before that. Imperialist Russia here I come! Please.

This could be fun if it's not tied to the main story.
4-player game modes:
-First to locate and kill the target
-First to reach point X without being thrown off a building by another player
-1 Assassin vs 3 guards defending a target
Overall it could be awesome or horrible. Time will tell. As long as it doesn't hold up/replace AC3, it's fine.

More Assassins Creed is always a good thing. I won't even mind if it is DLC, as long as it's a true add-on, and not that crap their pulling with the upcoming releases of DLC ("we didn't have time to fit it in before, so we're charging for it after"... bullshit, Ubisoft).
Oh and one other little thing about Assassins Creed - I dig this new uPlay (or is it Uplay) that they've added to AC 2 (and looks like it's added to a couple other new ubisoft games). If they keep working and developing it, it'll create a bit more incentive to play Ubisoft games, which I don't have a problem with (as long as they continue their current trend of better quality games, and not the shit they pulled on us with Red Steel and the rest of the first string of Wii games).

No one likes Desmond Miles. I'd rather play as Ezio over him since we learned more about Ezio in AC2. Come on, Ubisoft. Learn that no one likes him since he is technically a SUPPORTING CHARACTER while the actual assassins have been the main ones. Mainly Ezio since you follow pretty much his ENTIRE LIFE.

Yea, they did this last year, it was called Left 4 Dead 2, it pissed a lot of people off, and it was average at best compared to the original, which was a much more quality product.
Good call on that one Ubisoft, I'm sure this'll work out great. /sarcasm

If there was ever one games franchise that DIDN'T need multiplayer, It's Assassin's Creed. Co-op, at a push, I suppose could work, but I really wouldn't care for a competetive multiplayer aspect.
Why do developers nowadays seem to think every game NEEDS online multiplayer. They're just shoehorning it in for the sake of it.
This news has kinda pissed me off to be honest.

Gah, my plan was to finish Assassin's Creed before getting the sequel. Is it even necessary? I'm sorry, but the first one gets repetitive as hell, and 2 looks better in every conceivable way.

So do they mean "competitive online multiplayer" or "online co-op", because those are two very different things and one of them will make me wet my pants with excitement.

Personally, I love this. AC multiplayer will bring a whole new level of FRESH to multiplayer games. Shooters will eventually get stale. Cannot wait for Assassin's Creed III. The last two were seriously amazing games.
