You hear a lot of talk about bad movies made out of video games, but finally the trend is being broken by Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which has won Rotten Tomatoes' Golden Tomato award! We haven't checked the category yet, but we're sure it's ... oh. It's the Golden Tomato for "Worst Reviewed Movie of the Year."
Disheartening? Sure. But keep in mind: Though it only netted four percent positive reviews, those two good ones came from the New York Times and Variety, so Street Fighter fans still sort of have reason to keep their Chuns up. Sort of.

Somehow, for some reason, with the stars properly aligned, I found the use of that clip so utterly fantastic that it has made me giddy.

I think I'm more shocked that it's not a Uwe Boll movie.

I think if Uwe boll had done it there would have been more washed up stars, more partial nudity, and way more cheesy fighting involved,

I have to say, I love great movies by great directors, the Tarantinos, the Nolans, the Eastwoods, the Bruckheimers', but I actually liked the Chun-Li movie. Kristin Kreuk might have had something to do with that, because I really love Smallville, but I didn't think it was all that terrible. I mean, I can understand why someone would say that it sucked, Neal McDonough was terrible as Bison, and the story was sort of Karate-Kid formulaic, but I'm sorry, I liked it.

Some movies are so bad they're funny but this one is just bad. Kevin Clein's "Charlie" was so poorly acted, I actually go in a trance watching him. It really is that bad.

Now that I think of it, it wasn't just his acting that was bad. His character was poorly written too. He lost his stake out target by pretending to make out with someone and then again where he just fell asleep. That kind of ineptitude has to be intentional but I don't get why. Somebody tell me what was right about that movie.

From every genre of gaming .... the fighting game genre is the one with most adaptations, with street fighter, the hundret mortal kombat movies, now tekken and if you count ... double dragon
From every genre of gaming .... the fighting game genre is the most famous for sucking at story
Than again ... the street fighter animes are actualy very cool .... but .... you can always count on hollywood to make a franchise movie without anything close to the franchise's ....stuffs

I suspect that fighting games are easier to film because most of them take place on earth in the modern day, feature easily recognisable characters (thus allowing them to be thrown into any plot and still to say the movie's based on the game), and focus on hand-to-hand fight scenes which are nice and cheap to film compared to the epic CGI needed for fantasy or sci-fi films.
Or at least that's what the people who pick up the rights think. Then we end up with trash like this.

Tekken may actually be decent because it actually has some semblance of a story to follow. Of course it gets A LOT more jumbled the further along you go. I think the Tekken movie will probably be the best fighting game film released.
That's not saying much, but there's no way it'll be as bad as some of the others.

No way can you vote The Wizard to be the worst video game movie of all time. It was a big NES infomercial. Super Mario Bros. 3, The Power Glove, Rad Racer, Ninja Gaiden. They all made a show in that movie. That movie was for the Nintendo generation,

Let's not forget guys that (at least the last time I checked) they already had plans to make even more of these Street Fighter films, entirely based on the fact that people still buy the old one.
I wonder if ten years from now teenagers are going to be buying this movie because they've heard all these stories about how bad it was. The old SF movie is fun to watch now, The Wizard is absolutely fantastic...maybe one day this movie will be a whole lot better.
To be entirely fair, as terrible as this movie was I had so much fun seeing it since my friend and I were the only ones in the theater, meaning we got to react very loudly to everything that happened. Well worth the admission price.

Here's what I don't understand. It shouldn't take much to make a Street Fighter movie. The plot is pretty straightforward from the perspective of any of the primary heroes. Ryu wants to be the best fighter in the world so he goes around fighting and training with anyone who's willing. Guile and Chun-li are both trying to take down M. Bison, the head of a worldwide terrorist organization, and also to get revenge for the loss of loved ones by his hand. I mean come on! They don't need to add anything extra. Just follow the basic plot points and give us lots of fighting with REAL martial artists. Sure they can occasionally toss in a fireball but come on!
What I wouldn't do is combine the Ryu and Guile and Chun-li plotlines. Give each one it's own movie so that each story feels fulfilling. Also, stop trying to cram every damn fighter into a 2-hour time slot! Anybody who's not major never gets a fair shake. And Ryu should never have to play second fiddle to Guile. Ryu's the face of the freaking franchise.

I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at considering Chun-li got her own movie and it was awful, and I'm pretty sure the next one is about Ryu (going by the ending of the Chun-li one) and it's going to be terrible too. If blending the plotlines was the problem, Legend of Chun-li would have been good.

The NYT at time of release gave poor reviews to Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Sleeping Beauty, The Godfather II, etc. They're a pretty terrible source for movie reviews.

OMG, this movie was so bad that it deserves the OMG acronym to start off my comment about it. Then what's EVEN WORSE is how in the extras they talk all this non-sense and try to come across as if they actually took making this movie seriously. Horrible. Glad I didn't have to "pay for the Blu-ray rental", as an individual, since I already have an online Blockbuster account. If it were old school renting, it wouldn't have been rented by me, and THAT'S sho-nuff.

I knew going into this movie that it wouldn't be "true" to the street fighter storyline (but at this point, what is? With multiple games, movies, animes, comics, etc...). So with this mindset, I was able to chill and not critique any "street fighter inconsistancies" and I came away enjoying the movie for what it was. The characters that were in the movie were portrayed quite well in some cases, such as Chun-Li, Balrog, Vega and Bison, even if they weren't very "true" to the gaming counterparts.
I really doubt we'll see a sequel... in fact, I'd be surprised if we see another Street Fighter movie, period. But if someone, somehow makes one, I'll watch it (especially if someone makes a porn parody version!)
