A BBFC classification for a "Game of the Year" edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum has popped up online, causing quite a stir here at Joystiq HQ. While we all agree that Batman was "a game of the year," the listing offers no clues as to what would be included in a GOTY package. So, allow us to activate detective mode:
First, there are the two DLC packs for the game to consider: the "Insane Night" Map Pack (free for everyone) and "Prey In The Darkness," available on PS3 in the US and on both PS3 and Xbox 360 in Europe. Also, those who pre-ordered the original release from GameStop received access to the challenge map "Dem Bones," while those that snagged the fancy Collector's Edition got their own unique challenge map in "Crime Alley" -- both could certainly be included in a special edition re-release. Considering all the DLC out there (but c'mon, we want more Rocksteady!), there's a valid GOTY edition in the making here. And how about a batarang upgrade, too? (That cheap plastic one just didn't cut it.)
We've turned on our 'stiq signal in the hopes of attracting Warner Bros., Eidos and Rocksteady for clarification. We'll let you know just as soon as they show up on our rooftop.
[Thanks, C.A.]

@Ben
Just tell them they won't know the difference and to get the cheap one. Leaves more for us anyways.

I agree completely. Fallout 3 GOTY add ons were as big as the actual game. Of course, this is a Bethesda crap engine game, designed to make additional missions very simple to program in, so of course that game would have tons of additional missions. (not a knock on fallout 3, a fucking good game).
A couple of little maps ain't gonna compete.
I will say this, I never buy games when released anymore. Didn't buy Oblivion or Fallout or Burnout or several others, and I came out way ahead by getting the GOTY.
I get the impression that a lot of games are deliberately cut short (such as Fallout 3's amazingly short main mission that actually renders the game unplayable after winning... unless you pay IRL money). That sucks. No way around it... that sucks.
They said FFXIII has had much of the game cut. Perhaps half. Will there be a GOTY version? I'm going to have to wait it out.

@ Gimboa: I never had a problem with the "ending" of Fallout 3 before broken steel. The game is not linear...if you don't want to die, you just avoid doing that mission!

Definitely sucks about DLC now. Chances are if you buy any DLC for a game (i.e. SFIV, Oblivion, etc.), it will end up in a new version a year later for the same price.

How does it not having as much DLC make it not a valid GOTY edition? They're completely different types of games with completely different types of DLC. Every game isn't going to follow Fallouts blueprint.

petebot,
I didn't know that because I don't spoil games. It was genuinely a very lame moment when I realized I would never get to see what happened in the world of fallout after I cleaned the water.
This was an obvious part of the main game that was left out unless you bought the add on. I had the GOTY, and realized I was OK, but for a sec there, I was pretty annoyed. I'm think fallout 3 is a great game, but the main mission was very short and ended the game. That's simply the truth. Sure, avoid that mission, in a very strange and distracting way if you think about what the character would do, to avoid the game ending.
It made the game materially different on the PS3 for quite a while. It's unfortunate that these strange deals are interfering with game enjoyment. But I'm not really complaining about Fallout. I am just noting that this trend will keep me from buying this kind of game until the GOTY pack is released. Obviously that worked out for me in this case, since I wanted to play the game without googling what would happen after I did this or that mission. If someone bought Fallout 3 on launch, and bought DLC at launch, how much was that game? $100? Let people who are willing to pay that, pay it, and I won't.

Great game. Glad it came out when it did though - there is just too much going on in Q1 2010 and it would have been swept by the wayside if it came out right now.

The case that came with the collector's edition was more impressive than the cheap-ass batarang. I can't say I was terribly impressed with the journal either. :|

Maybe Joker levels for Xbox 360?
How about the promise of new costumes? 90s era BTAS costumes? Batman Beyond costume?
Really RockSteady needs to release some DLC badly... I'd be willing to pay for every single one.

Yes, what a great plan. Come, friends, let's all not buy games when they come out in the slim hope that one of them will be good enough to be Game of the Year and we'll get a super package 6-12 months later and pay the same price for some incidental DLC!

I am honestly tired of GOTY editions of games. It's getting to the point where every game gets a GOTY release which comes with DLC at a fraction of the cost. What's the point in spending the extra money on the game on release if you can get everything with it cheaper down the road?

Well...
You can install and uninstall at will without downloading, It's yours forever, you can sell it if you want, no licenses to worry about, if there is a bunch of DLC for the game buying the brick and mortar version is almost always the same if not cheaper than the DLC if you bought it separately (Especially in Fallout 3 and Oblivion's case where you can find the GOTY edition 30-40 bucks). Also a disc; did I say disc already? Yeah there is a disc, sometimes 2.

Tep, he said GOTY (Game of the Year) not GOD (Games on Demand).
That said, there IS no point to buying single player games on release day unless the CE/LE has some awesome bonus (like with Blazblue). In 6 months/1 year the game will still be as good, but half the price and (possible) with new features.

would my trophies and save sync with this version? or would my ps3 see it as a diffrent game?

It would be the same game as the original as there are no dlc trophies, and the trophies would be the same. However, when playing the game it would say Batman Arkham Asylum: GOTY edition, or something fancy like that.

These GOTY editions irritate me.
If you want more sales, lower the friggin' price! Don't bring it out again at full price ya d-bags.
I feel like these are in direct opposition to the Greatest Hits initiative.
(And hasn't Uncharted 2 been unanimously named GOTY?)

They do lower the price. You get the game and all addons released for it for the original price of the core game, while the original game's price drops like a stone.

I'll probably pick this up when it comes out. Still waiting on a cheaper fallout goty like $40 or cheaper... maybe Dragon Age too if that gets a GOTY... I guess I'll just be occupied by l4d2, mw2, bc, ob, gtaiv, and everything else I have while I wait.

ALL ABOUT the Batarang upgrade.
As a matter of fact, those of us who were dooped into buying the Collector's Edition should get a FREE upgrade!
What about it Bats? Come out here and speak to the people!

Batman is a Masterpiece and a GOTY edition was inevitable. It is a way to increase sales with out having to do much. Not only that but drum up hype for Batman: Arkham Asylum 2. Which I hope measures up to this game. I am going back through the game now and finishing the challenges and Playing it on Insane difficulty. What a great game.
