As spotted by Siliconera, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aimé recently told CNBC that users streaming Netflix through the Wii aren't going to miss the HD content they won't be able to access -- free content that's available through other devices. He justified that claim with a simple argument: "over 26 million consumers have bought a Wii. The consumer is saying, for them, the quality of the visual is not nearly as important as the overall entertainment."
It may irritate 360 and PS3 proponents to no end to hear him lay it out that plainly, but we're having a hard time finding a flaw in Reggie's logic.

While Reggie's logic is undoubtedly solid, it's certainly a step away from bullet-proof, as you have just successfully proven. Touche good sir, touche.

Maybe yes. Maybe no.
If the entertainment is the same then the difference in visuals should be more noticeable. But that doesn't make it necessary.
While watching a movie on a HDTV from Blueray might be better than watching the same movie on an old vhs tape and SDTV, it's still possible to enjoy the movie in the second case.
(and I guess many wii owners won't have, or use it with, a HDTV anyway, so it doesn't really matter).
I watched an old recorded-from-tv copy of Cool Hand Luke on vhs last night... it was a pretty crappy copy. You know what, I really enjoyed it. After about 5 minutes I totally failed to notice the visuals and technical limitations, and i just enjoyed the movie.

of course you do, why? because you are thinking on a low level - following the beliefs presented to you. after all, 26 million owners of a game machine can't be wrong about movies.
the truth is a video game experience and a movie are two different things.
but you go right ahead with the rest of the fanboi lot and keep on drinking that kool aid. and if you're just being cute and playing along with the whole reggie is a badass, well - that dog is beat to death. give it up
downvote away kids, downvote away.

if you have Starz, then you have most of the good movies the Netflix has anyway. other than that, Netflix tends to have a great collection of nostalgic titles--old cartoons like Voltron (complete series), etc.
I don't really care about HD for the Wii because I have it hooked up to an older CRT TV just in case my daughter lets go of the Wiimote and smashes the TV I won't be as upset if she broke my 60" Lcos TV.

Well, I suppose that if you're one of the 26 million old people in nursing homes that bought a Wii, you can barely see the TV, let alone tell if it's in HD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libdvdcss
"libdvdcss is a free software library for accessing and unscrambling DVDs encrypted with the Content Scramble System (CSS). libdvdcss is part of the VideoLAN project and is used by VLC media player and other DVD player software"
"Unlike DeCSS, libdvdcss has never been legally challenged."
There, a free software library for playing DVDs. It's also used in MPlayer, which if I remember right is what homebrew uses to play DVDs in the Wii.
Nintendo has no excuse. They could easily afford the licensing fee, but even if they want to be cheap about it, there are free alternatives that have never come under legal question.

I'm glad it doesn't play DVDs.
1. It wears down the console quicker
2. Who doesn't already own like 4 DVD players?
3. the Wii is not a DVD player , it's a videogame console.
So I don't see how that makes it a laughing stock.

Each of the 3 companies has at least 1 asshat who makes me want to kick their face in. Reggie, Greenberg, and Hirai.
But holy shit if Reggie isn't the worst corporate mouthpiece I've ever seen from a video game company. Absolutely abysmal at putting spin on things.

I dunno, dude.
Every time Cammie Dunaway speaks, I get thoughts of domestic violence dancing in my head.
I can't stand Reggie either, so.. it's a tough call.

Nah, Dunaway's the bothersome one. Reggie at least comes off as believable most of the time, whereas you know Dunaway's lying through her teeth when she talks about enjoying games.
It's too bad they lost Denise Kaigler. She was good at talking to the press, but also at putting them in their place.
And Don Mattrick and J Allard are way, way more annoying than Greenberg.

Seriously, the man is great at spinning things.
...we've delayed the game you've all been waiting for... but don't worry, it's BECAUSE WE'RE MAKING IT BETTER.
...we're making the game you all want... but the thing is, it's still just a concept right now, we just needed to show SOMETHING at E3 this year...
...we're not making wiiHD... but we'll go ahead and make a DSi in every size and color for you!
...we didn't fail greenpeace's test... we just didn't tell them the answers...
...we've developed a new firmware update for the wii... it makes the shop channel run smoother. (it actually doesn't and disables homebrew)

Unfortunately the quality of overall games is about equal to the quality of the visuals =(

Isn't the Wii not selling as well as it used to?
I mean, sure it's popular because it's sold like a gajillion units, but actual game sales aren't too high, I think.
Also, just stream it to your PC. If you don't have one, then the Wii disc is worthless for you have no Internet. :P
