Sega opened the official website for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing earlier this week and now, thanks to some sleuthing from tssz|news, it looks like the remaining playable characters have been uncovered. Hidden in the website's code are several images, including the one above. Close inspection reveals Akira Yuki of Virtua Fighter alongside what looks to be Jacky Bryant. Also pictured is one of the characters from Bonanza Bros and what appears to be Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone. Digging further into the websites code, tssz discovered images of KapuKapu, otherwise known as the cat from the classic Dreamcast puzzler, ChuChu Rocket.
Some decent additions to the roster, to be sure, but there seem to be some puzzling omissions as well. No Phantasy Star? Where's Kid Chameleon? Altered Beast would be a great fit as well. There's always DLC, right?

From Sonic the Hedgehog:

From other Sega properties:
* AiAi from Super Monkey Ball
* Amigo from Samba de Amigo

* Beat from Jet Set Radio
* Alex Kidd from the Alex Kidd series
* Billy Hatcher from Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg

Has anyone else noticed that this fake... Sonic's picture is from the 2006 game.

It's not fake. It's placeholder art for the actual pics because that is a mock-up of the in-game select screen. They are doing something similar to what Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars does for the character select screen.
I wouldn't doubt it if that becomes the new norm for crossovers.

I wouldn't put it past Sega to use photoshop to copy/paste in images from other games and use that as their select screen.

What an amazingly original roster! Sure, a few Sega traditionals might not be there, but I have to admit, I'm quite suprised by the variety and depth they went to for characters.
Really, Virtua Fighter, Shenmue, Bonanza Brothers? They're actually exceeding my expectations, but maybe that's because I kept mine realistic.
It's easy to over-expect, but c'mon. I'd also love to see Temjin, The Phantasy Star IV Lland Rover, The Afterburner Jet,, a character from Planet Harriers, Vyse and Aika, Streets of Rage/ Golden Axe representations, and Bayonetta riding a rocket, but that's what sequels and later games are for. Sega has a lot of memorable franchises!
Lastly, I have to say, I don't think of Mario Kart when I see this game... I actually think about Motor Toon on PS1. Man did I love that game back then!

Yeah, agreed that characters or straight-up vehicles would be way more interesting than "Akira, Ulala and Sonic drive cars". Land Rover + Space Harrier and NiGHTS flying + Sonic running , etc. This is just dumb as the first time SEGA did it with Sonic Drift

I'm disappointed in Sega they are leaving out on of my all time favorite franchises that would be great for this game. how about Eternal Champion's , like say shadow or Ramses III or even better from Eternal Champion sega cd is -Senator and for his special move , glen beck will pop up and cry tears of oil so all the carts crash into on another . no, well , it's just a thought.

There is too much Dreamcast era nostalgia packed into this game for anyone to be hating on this game.
With Samba De Amigo, Chu Chu Rocket, Crazy Taxi, Monkey Ball, Space Chanel 5, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, House of the Dead, etc. there is definitely a lot here for Dreamcast fans. Not so much for Saturn or Genesis fans though.
Weird that there aren't more MegaDrive/Genesis-era characters considering that was the pinnacle of Sega's success.
I've got my fingers crossed for Ecco the Dolphin and Seaman DLC. :D Also a Toejam and Earl spaceship would be nice for this game. Too bad the TJ&E owners are be d-bags about licensing the characters for this game. As if TJ&E have any future outside of nostalgia driven games like this.
