There once was a time when your only option for exercising creativity in Team Fortress 2 was to come up with clever ways to grief your fellow players. Today, Valve announced that players would soon have a less annoying way to stretch their imagination muscles -- by designing their own items and avatars which could possibly show up in-game.
Of course, you can't simply break one of the classes by creating a mini-nuke launcher for them -- there's a number of restrictions to what's appropriate for the game. Check out Valve's handy "Tips and Tricks" page to find out how to ensure your homebrewed creations are TF2-acceptable. For instance, a new fedora for the Sniper? Absolutely. A gun shaped like genitalia for the Heavy? Absolutely not.

SNIPER SENTRY OMFG!
I love Valve. One more reason to extend that love. I can see the community doing some really awesome things with this. Too bad I'm not that creative.

The reason Xbox isn't getting updated is because 512MB of ram is not enough for
updated TF2.
The PS3 on the other hand... discuss it with EA.

Before this gets out of hand like it does in every TF2 post. Valve reached the upper limit of the 360's 512mb of ram with the original TF2. Something like 80% of steam users have 2gb or more of ram, plus their video ram, so working with so little is not something Valve is used to. All the updates that they've added to the PC version of the game take up a sizeable ammount more memory, so it's hard to get it all to the 360 without pushing the framerate down to single digits. They've said they're working on it, but there's only so much optimizing they can do. They also want to be able to put it all in a single dlc pack so as not to charge users for each class update.
Plus, you have to consider that it's pretty low on their priorities. Even before they started updating TF2 the 360 version had a very small active community and now it's even smaller. It would be quite a large investment to optimize to the point of bringing all of those updates to the 360, and why put so much effort into updating for such a small community when your counter strike, l4d, l4d2, and tf2 pc userbases are all ridiculously larger? And don't forget, they really need to just finish Episode 3. Like Now.

@Caramel: The 360 TF2 player base is not getting smaller. He's pretty stable. I don't know if you've noticed but every time I go to the 360 section of any game store there's almost always copies of the Orange Box available. And now that it's been added to MS's Platinum Hits, I'm pretty sure that's a good sign that its still able to sell a few copies every once in a while.
The 360 TF2 player base is very much alive.
Valve should probably do what Rockstar did and sell TF2 on a separate discs with all of the new updates. (Then again, that might not be fair to other players. I guess it would probably have to be relatively cheap..)

Just because the game is still selling doesn't mean that there's a large active TF2 community. Plenty of people bought the orange box, played through the single player campaigns, maybe played a game or two of TF2, and then switched to COD4 or Halo. Even in nov/dec 2007 when the game launched it never came close to being one of the "top of xbox live" type of games. I'm sure the community is a decent size, but what I'm saying is that they have much larger communities to support. L4D2 on the other hand is still on top of those charts. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to work on updating one of the most played games on xbox live instead of a 2 year old game with a much smaller community? Don't get me wrong, it would be awesome if they would update the 360 version and hopefully it's still in the works. All I'm saying is can you really blame them if they have higher priorities?

Because Valve listens to their fans.
Not to mention that the update possibilities that could work in the game are mind boggling.

I'm all for Valve creating enthusiasm and adding new things to the game, but they need to keep the focus on simplicity and fun. The hats and crafting system have turned TF2 into a farming game for some people, which tells me those updates are too complicated and time intensive. Some of the new weapons and melees are too powerful.
