Yamauchi: Gran Turismo 5 uses 80% of PS3's power

If you're someone who loves themselves some arbitrary console performance figures, Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi has you covered. Speaking to VentureBeat, the Gran Turismo creator reckons the latest game in Sony's flagship racing series taps "about 80 percent of the processing power" of the PlayStation 3," adding, "the PS3 hardware has a very high peak performance. The better you manipulate it, the better it performs."

That last quote sounds more like it's about an engine than a console, which isn't surprising given the amount of time Yamauchi spends behind the wheel of the actual supercars from his oft-delayed game. We seriously hope he's not aiming to use 100 percent of the system's potential -- we'd really like GT5 to come out before a child born today is able to drive a real car.

80% of a 7800 is nothing much. Its an outdated POS and I'm starting to have the same feelings towards the PS3 as I did towards the PS2 once PC games started requiring graphics cards.

Oh jesus not another one of these ps3 power articles. Seems like this happens with every exclusive for them now.

He should stop trying to figure out how much power he's using and just release the damn game.

Yeah it is better than those Mass Effect 2 trailers. I hate the psychopath trailer, it was really stupid.

If it supposedly uses 80% of the PS3's power, no way in hell they'd be able to add 3D support.

The spec features of the game were released in Japan and it mentioned in car head tracking, which is 3d enough.

Nah...GT6 will use 90% and GT7 will use 100%. :)

It's not about the percentages, it's about optimization and engine efficiency. So those 80% is probably so awesome it can cure cancer or melt your eyes.

Or cure cancer by melting it, if eye's melt that is just a fatal error in percentage.

Every car inside and out and every track was re-rendered. They added online multiplayer, 3D, Headtracking, a whole new menu system, new physics engine, etc. Basically, a complete overhaul of every aspect of GT4 and then more put on top of that. GT6 will just be more content and refining everything else.

Think of it like the difference from GT1 to GT2.

I'm not sure many people care, but its kinda interesting to know how much it takes to make the commercials for Mercedes-Benz, etc look so fucking real.

I really don't see how that explanation is supposed to calm those who are irritated with the constant delays. And besides, GoW3 is going to do alright regardless of whether or not GT is released at the same time.

But WE were supposed to get it on the summer, while Japan was getting it on March. What Sony is planning to do is delay it on Japan ONLY and release it AT THE SAME TIME WORLDWIDE. So it is STILL going for a SUMMER release in the US.
